For nearly two decades, I led a national organization through significant growth and capacity building, positioning it to effectively protect habitats and species via a well-managed system of protected areas. This success came with many missteps and adjustments, providing valuable lessons. Our team of skilled and dedicated staff, along with partners including government, NGOs, local communities, and donors, played a crucial role. We engaged in public awareness, people-centered action, capacity building, embracing partnerships, not taking no for an answer, asking tough questions, and figuring out how to put square pegs in round holes. While the intended focus was National Parks and protected areas, we recognized the importance of engaging with local communities outside these areas to garner support. We also took advantage of training opportunities locally and abroad to build capacity, applied innovative thinking and used scientific tools to support key ecosystems and species within National Parks. This involved projects on residents and endemics like the Bahama Oriole, and work on migratory species like the Kirtland’s Warbler and Piping Plover. Our efforts have resulted in enhanced knowledge and capacity, benefiting important habitats across the Bahamas. The conservation of our bird species has improved, showcasing the impact of dedicated stewardship and community involvement in conservation efforts.
