Grupo Jaragua's work

Grupo Jaragua (GJ) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization of the Dominican Republic, legally incorporated in 1989, whose mission is to contribute to the conservation of the biodiversity of the island of Hispaniola and the environmental services derived from it, with the participation of local communities and relying on sound science. Grupo Jaragua works on biodiversity conservation, advocacy and education, sustainable livelihoods, and institutional strengthening in both DR and Haiti. Through long-term programs, Grupo Jaragua has achieved tangible conservation outcomes for endangered species such as the Ricord's Rock Iguana, Hawksbill Turtle, and many other wildlife. As the local BirdLife International partner, Grupo Jaragua is a key leader in avian conservation work. In collaboration with local and international partners, including BirdsCaribbean, their team has carried out over 13 years of monitoring, research, and conservation work for threatened birds such as the Black-capped Petrel, Bicknell's Thrush, and the Hispaniolan Parrot. In addition, GJ has led major advocacy campaigns to prevent the destruction of key Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, such as Sierra de Bahoruco National Park.  For more information, please click here.

GJ carries out bird monitoring and conservation actions at several wetlands including the Ramsar sites of Laguna Cabral and Laguna de Oviedo.

As part of the International Black-capped Petrel Working Group, GJ leads BCPE nest searches in Sierra de Bahoruco and Valle Nuevo national parks in DR, and in Foret-des-Pins in Haiti.

GJ works with BirdsCaribbean and local nature groups to promote citizen science initiatives, including participation in the Global Big Day.

To celebrate the Caribbean Endemic Bird Festival and Migratory Bird Day, the GJ team carries out education activities to reach over 2,000 children and adults each year.

From Mangroves to Mountains

Grupo Jaragua's work includes restoration, conservation, and education actions "from mangroves to mountains" in the Biosphere Reserve Jaragua-Bahoruco-Enriquillo. These include community-led restoration activities from the spiny dry forests at the southern shore of Lake Enriquillo to the lush cloud forests of Sierra de Bahoruco National Park.  In addition, restoration actions are also carried out in the arid, dry forests of Anse-a-Pitres and high-elevation pine forests in Foret-des-Pins in Haiti.  Since 2020, Grupo Jaragua has led a nationwide education campaign, in collaboration with non-profit Seacology, to raise awareness about the importance of mangroves and other wetland ecosystems. The GJ team strongly believes in promoting connectivity across landscapes.
