What is Assessment Literacy?
Assessment Literacy (AL) refers to having the knowledge of and competencies to apply assessment concepts to plan and design assessments which involve and support learners, and to use assessment information to evaluate and improve teaching and learning.
How does this Area of Practice help us prepare our students to be future-ready?
As articulated in our beliefs about assessment in the Singapore Curriculum Philosophy (SCP), assessment is integral to teaching and learning and helps our students become self-directed learners. Guided by our belief in the SCP that every child wants to and can learn, our assessment practices should recognise each child’s efforts, provide opportunities for all learners to progress and be mindful of the impact on students’ well-being. Our assessment practices should provide feedback to students so that they know what and how to improve, as well as develop their metacognition so that they can monitor their learning progress and learn better. Assessment-literate teachers who enact learner-centred assessment will enable our students to focus on mastery rather than grades, experience greater joy and ownership in learning, and become motivated to learn deeply, and learn for life.
