Assessment literacy is an area of practice prioritised for teacher professional development under the SkillsFuture for Educators (SFEd) in Singapore. What is assessment literacy and is it always understood and used to achieve the learning goals of ALL students?
According to policymakers, assessment literacy refers to having the knowledge of and competencies to apply assessment concepts to plan and design assessments which involve and support learners, and to use assessment information to evaluate and improve teaching and learning.
Assessment should be fit for its intended purpose. The purpose of assessment literacy as understood above is to evaluate and improve teaching and learning. How would we rethink assessment literacy if the primary agenda of assessment is to be fit for ALL learners. What if we were to enact assessment practices in ways that would ensure that intended learning outcomes are achieved by each and every single learner under our care, including those who are struggling to learn?
This site is headlined as Assessment Literacy for All (ALfA) to signal the purpose its content and advocacy should be fit for. It is hope that the ideas presented will address your assessment literacy learning needs and help you ensure that your classroom assessment practices support ALL learners under your care to learn and succeed.
