Youth Development

In addition to academic instruction, out-of-school programs focus on youth development in order to help children build protective factors and resilience, which is shown to be effective in helping students succeed. The resources here address ways to help build communication skills, self-regulation, empathy for others, and persistence. The curriculum and program information include visual art, dance, theater, and music activities that encourage self-expression, build skills associated with academic success, like discipline, and provide the Spark or motivation for lifelong learning. We also focused on youth development resources that could be used remotely as well as in class.

Many students experience adverse childhood experiences and benefit from social-emotional learning The resources include structured curriculum like the Caring School Communities. Other models are based on Mindfulness techniques, which help students understand their experiences, cope with stress, and respond with less emotional reactivity. Students can learn Yoga and other forms of relaxation.

Work with students also focuses on Positive Behavior Support, reinforcing positive behaviors, and providing tiered interventions in a proactive way to respond to issues, including counseling. Youth development efforts also includes the resources of partners and agencies working together, providing enrichment, mentoring, arts, sports, and fitness.

Montgomery County ESC offers resources for social-emotional learning (SEL). This site includes videos, curriculum and other information.

This video from Edutopia provides definitions of components of social S-emotional learning EL and is a wonderful overview. Discusses the impact of SEL on lifelong success.

East End and Miracle Makers uses this curriculum focusing on mindfulness, an evidence-based approach that helps children with self-regulation, handling stress.

The On the Record and Facing History curriculum includes a focus on middle school and topics. These projects reinforce empathy, understanding and other SEL topics.

Wesley uses their own version of Skillastics to reinforce activity, fitness, youth development, and health. This site is the national site for information on activities.

The YMCA uses the Coordinated Approach to Children's Health (CATCH), which is a evidence-based approach to fitness, health, and nutrition. The program has strong results in improving outcomes.

AttendanceWorks offers considerable support to districts and community organizations to intervene strategically to reduce missed days. The Miracle Mkers program also has an effective intervention program with both students and families.
