Adolescent Literacy

East End Community Services is developing English Language Arts resources for youth at Wright Brothers Middle School. The resources below provide an overview of evidence-based programs, which work with teens. Many of these resources also include a social justice component.

Expeditionary Learning has a middle school ELA curriculum with focus on authentic learning. Other resources including Journeys and SIM, which were included in Ohio's Evidence-Based Clearinghouse.

Facing History and Ourselves includes a social studies/history and ELA curriculum. The program addresses key moments in history and the choices that people made in those choices, e.g., the Holocaust, Armenian genocide, etc. The curriculum explores global events as well as the United States history of slavery and racism. Students learn about their own choices and the roles people play as bystanders, perpetrators, and up-standers--people who speak out for change.

On the Record is an English Language Arts curriculum developed by Scholastic to inspire critical thinking about choices while exploring social justice issues, and high-quality writing. The program includes texts, slideshows, independent reading, and stretch texts.

Other resources focus on creative writing, journalism, and more. These lessons and units could be used online during the pandemic or as part of interactive, dynamic face-to-face classes.

The Strategic Instructional Model (SIM) is an evidence-based approach for struggling middle school readers. ODE included the curriculum in their clearinghouse. Xtreme Reading books for youth go along with the curriculum.

This is curriculum helps struggling readers who are one to three years behind. This is an evidence-based approach with a real life focus.

The OER Project has free online informational texts and videos for a course on history from the Big Bang to today. Connects history/social studies with ELA.

This online poetry resource includes cross-section of poets, including contemporary writers.
