Expeditionary Learning
East End Community Service's Miracle Maker program is planning on using the Expeditionary Learning (EL) curriculum materials. Founded by the Harvard Graduate School and Education and Outward Bound, Expeditionary Learning (now EL Education) is an evidence-based program. In a randomized control trial and quasi-experimental study with 70 schools in 18 districts, Mathematica found the EL group outperformed the control group in reading achievement (2019). Expeditionary Learning combines professional development and coaching with a curriculum that focuses on the mastery of knowledge, authentic, project-based learning, service to others (character), and high-quality student work.
The Expeditionary Learning curriculum documents are free for teachers to use. Professional development enables teachers to implement with fidelity. EL uses self-paced professional development and webinars to provide the highest-quality instruction for persons implementing the curriculum.
The curriculum includes a focus on "Crew," which emphasizes the importance of students as purposeful members of the school and community. The curriculum includes modules, which focus on authentic learning opportunities. Students engage in inquiry and completion of projects to support English Language Arts learning. The curriculum also includes direct instruction in specific ELA skills. EL has developed remote learning videos and slides to support the specific skill blocks, which are part of the curriculum.
