Focus Math
The focusMATH curriculum is included within the Ohio’s Evidence-Based Clearinghouse. The program shows STRONG ESSA evidence with a random control trial of 357 diverse students. The study showed an average effect size of +.24 with the treatment group outperforming the control by 9 percentile points (Styers & Baird-Wilkinson, 2011).
The focusMATH uses a Response to Intervention (RtI) model, accelerating learning with intensive, balanced, and individualized instruction. Lessons include numeration, geometry, measurement, sets/patterns, operations, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and problem-solving. Instruction includes daily checkpoints, and positive results were received by aides and teachers (Styers & Baird-Wilkinson, 2011).
The program includes use of manipulative items to help with each grade-level. Each student will have a workbook and a student kit of manipulative items that could be sent home during remote learning.
The following handouts show the program steps. The teacher edition shows guided instruction so that teachers could either pre-record lessons using the suggestions or set up remote learning using the guides and showing examples. The sessions include call-outs for English Learners.
