Writing Practice
The YMCA of Greater Dayton wanted to create student-authored books, using picture prompts. The following provides a learning and fun activity and could be used in a variety of ways. Based on their grade level, students could type their own narratives in Chromebooks or record their voices making up the story based upon their own imagination, using the illustrations as prompts.
Teachers could print out the resources and send home with students for them to write by hand their narratives. Students could use the pictures as prompts for drawing their own illustrations and developing their own stories. Some of the templates allow students to create informational texts. Students could collaborate as a team on a shared document or students could write books individually.
The activities allow students to explore emotions of the protagonist, connect to STEM projects, like those associated with the Challenger Center, and for older youth, students could explore more complex ELA standards, using templates to write their unique books.
Teachers could share books online with other students, parents, and celebrate the completion. Each link takes you to an Google Drive PowerPoint.
