Afterschool and Summer Toolkit for Montgomery county




Learn to Earn Dayton appreciate the work of the Together for Students grant from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and the Ross and Ruth Family Downing Foundation in supporting the creation of this toolkit. The Together for Students grant is an outgrowth of the work of Communities in Schools, Coalition for Community Schools, and StriveTogether.

The Together for Students' grant to Learn to Earn Dayton served as the impetus of the Afterschool Toolkit project. Learn to Earn Dayton provides technical support, training, and assistance accessing fiscal resources to Montgomery County afterschool programs.

This Together for Students effort joined the resources of three separate community networks. The Coalition for Community Schools, an initiative of the Institute for Educational Leadership (IEL), which includes national, state and local organizations that utilize community schools as an equitable continuous improvement strategy and an approach to build stronger and healthier families and communities.

Working with 2,350+ schools in 25 states and the District of Columbia, Communities In Schools is the nation’s leading dropout prevention organization proven to keep students in school and on the path to graduation.

StriveTogether has a clear purpose: help every child succeed in school and in life from cradle to career, regardless of race, zip code or circumstance. With nearly 70 communities across the country, StriveTogether provides resources, best practices and processes to give every child every chance for success.


Overview

This Toolkit is designed to help new afterschool programs in Dayton and Montgomery County startup and offer support to existing afterschool providers.

The resources include information from the US Department of Education in the You for Youth (Y4Y) site, the Ohio Department of Education, (Please see the ODE WordPress site for 21st CCLC providers here. We include resources from the Center for Out of School Advancement (COSA) and the Ohio Afterschool Network, the Wallace Foundation, and many other sites. Dayton Public Schools is the direct recipient in two new Nina M. Lowery 21st Century Community Learning Center grants in FY 2020-21. They are the district partner in three other grants. The district works to integrate high-quality classroom instruction with effective out-of-school programming. Trotwood Madison City School District is the recipient of two 21st Century programs.

The resources include information from existing and new 21st Century primary community-based partners including East End Community Services, working at Ruskin School and Wright Brothers, Omega CDC at Fairview School, and the YMCA of Greater Dayton at Cleveland School.

In response to the COVID 19 pandemic, this Toolkit also contains resources for remote learning, in-person classes, and hybrid opportunities.
