American Airlines ordered 50 Airbus A321XLR aircraft at the 2019 and became the first US airlines to receive the aircraft type in October 2025. American announced it will use the first batch of XLRs to replace the A321T on transcontinental flights between JFK and LAX followed by Transatlantic flights out of the JFK and PHL hubs. During an earnings call in 2026 American announced it scaled back its order of XLRs from 50 to 40 with over 20 airframes arriving by the end of 2026
The A321XLR has 20 Flagship Suite seats that are fully enclosed in 1-1 herringbone layout, 12 Recaro Premium Economy seats (2-2), and Collins Aerospace Meridian economy seats (3-3)Â
This fleet type has ViaSat high speed satellite Wi-Fi, seatback screens with Live TV, and power ports at every seat. These aircraft are powered by the CFM Leap 1-A33X engine and are all ETOPS certified.
