American has 218 Airbus A321-200 aircraft in the fleet with two different configurations. American's Transcontinental configuration, known as the A321T, consists of 15 ultra premium aircraft. These 15 planes are configured in a 3 class layout for transcon flights from New York JFK to LAX, SFO, and SNA (begins July 2). All Legacy American A321 have Sharklets and are powered by the IAE V2533-A5 engines. American is the largest operator of the IAE V2500 engine and the largest operator of Airbus aircraft in the World.

The A321T has 10 Safran Cirrus (formerly Zodiac Cirrus) Flagship First Class Suites in a 1-1 layout. 20 Rockwell Collins Diamond (formerly B/E Aerospace Diamond) Flagship Business Class seats in a 2-2 layout. And 36 Main Cabin and 36 Main Cabin Extra seats. This fleet type has viasat high speed satellite Wi-Fi, seatback screens with Live TV, and power ports at every seat.

On March 8, 2024 the first A321T went in for cabin retrofit to 190 seats
