Haese Mathematics 3 - Chapter 7E, page 147
You will use these skills in computer programming, household budgeting, landscaping, accounting and finance.....
You will be able to:
Understand the meaning of the equals sign
Use opposite operations to solve for 2 and 3 step equations
Identify the first term to be transposed
Make a variable the subject
1 step equations:
Solve the following for x -
x - 3 = 2 , x = 2 + 3 = 5
4x = 2 , x = 2/4 = 1/2
x + 6 = 2 , x = 2 - 6 = -4
x/4 = 2 , x = 2 x 4 = 8
Key Vocabulary:
opposite operation, transposing, equation
Ex 13:
5x + 7 = 17 take all of the numbers away from x
***when you are moving the numbers away from the variable, you must move the number furthest away from the variable
e.g. 5x = 17 - 7
5x = 10
x = 10/5
x = 2
Example 14: x/3 - 4 = -3
x/3 = -3 + 4
x/3 = 1
x = 1 x 3
x = 3
Let's go through some more.....
Notes:
Move the furthest number from the variable first
Make sure to do the same thing to both sides
Collect like terms and simplify to solve the equation
