Haese Mathematics 4 - Chapter 26A, page 432
You will use these skills in Betting/Gaming, research, actuarial data, sport, meteorology
You will be able to:
Identify favourable outcomes from common events
Describe likelihood in mathematical language
Identify possible outcomes and list in a sample space using basic set notation
Be familiar with Pr calculations using Pr notation and number
Key Vocabulary:
Outcome, likelihood, event, trial, favour
Notes:
Probabilty is used to work out the outcome of an event mathematically
Sample space is all of the possible outcomes listed in the experiment (same as a set) or if defined, the particular event from a list of all outcomes
Experiment is a list of all possible outcomes, an event is a subset of the sample space
Create a quick game or challenge that can be played within a minute or less. List all possible outcomes, then list them in a sample space. Predict which will be the most favourable outcome and why you think so. Carry out the game at least 5 times. List the result in a table and write a conclusion about the most likely outcome for future events.
Textbook Questions: Chapter 26A (questions 1-5)
Worksheet below
Write a short paper (250 words) on whether it is possible to predict the weather accurately using data from the previous week. Use predictions in terms of likelihood and percentage.
