Haese MYP Mathematics 1 - Chapter 6I, page 121
You will use these skills in Pharmacy and Nursing, manufacturing and construction
You will be able to:
Straight multiply each corresponding numerator and denominator accurately
Simplify each answer
Divide fractions by using the flip method
Multiply and divide whole numbers and fractions
Key Vocabulary:
Flip, invert, multiply, divide, quotient, product, reciprocal
Notes:
Multiply each numerator together and each denominator together then simplify
Denominator does not need to be the same
For mixed numbers, convert to improper fraction first
Divide is the same as multiply just flip the second fraction
Each whole number always has an imaginary 1 as the denominator
Textbook Questions: Chapter 6I (questions 1 - 4)
Textbook Questions: Chapter 6J (questions 1 - 9)
Work through the questions but ignore all denominators, multiplying and dividing as normal, then try to add denominators (keep the denominator the same in final answer)
Explain the deeper concept of why we actually use the method of straight multiplication to corresponding numerators and denominators, e.g. why it works every time
Explain also why we flip the fraction then multiply to solve for fraction division
