You will be able to:
knowing the notation for fractions
Spot fractions that are equivalent
Understand the difference between proper and improper fractions and use the correct notations
Understand the fraction as "a part of" with some real world examples from their experience (food, money, receipt, etc..)
Use the fraction also as a proportion term
Part 1-
We now have physical currency and digital currency (cryptocurrency) operating in the world of money
Create your own currency concept, what is the name of it, how is it used or traded, assign values to each currency amount, design each note/currency
Using your new currency, create a website or brochure listing at least 20 products you can purchase and the cost of each purchase
Create a powerpoint presentation of your currency, submit to teacher
Part 2 -
Your currency is now used to invest in company shares, research what shares are in a company (pizza slices example)
In groups of 4 max, decide on which top 3 companies people will be able to invest in using your currency, list them, the value of each share and how many shares are available to buy on the market
Each of your group members purchase shares in all 3 companies. Decide how many shares each person will get. You can choose to purchase all the shares for the companies or leave some for members of the public. List the results in a table.
Add a column for fractions, represent the amount each person has in fraction form.
Add another column for the simplified fraction where possible and calculate for each value. What did you do to simplify the fraction? Do they have the same value?
Add another column for equivalent fractions and multiply each fraction's numerator and denominator by the same number. When this fraction is simplified does it work out to be the same as the original simplified fractions?
Add all fractions for each column together adding a total row under each column. Simplify the answers.
Add the fractions for each person's shares of each company and list the result.
Subtract the fractions for each person's shares of each company and list the result.
Multiply the fractions for each person's shares of each company and list the result.
Divide the fractions for each person's shares of each company and list the result.
