Key Vocabulary:
Variables, pronumeral, co-efficient, rule, operation, expression, like terms
Find the units in the problem (e.g. puppies)
Context (story) - e.g. friend has a dog who had puppies, the amount of puppies is unknown
Find the answer by reading the instruction carefully, e.g. instruction is subtract
a) i) 5 - 1 = 4 or ii) 5 + 2 = 7
b) i) d represents number of puppies, d - 1 and ii) d + 2
Notes:
Algebra uses mathematical notation to solve problems starting in words (replaced with variables)
The multiplication symbol is disregarded in alegbraic expressions and is usually replaced with brackets or a coefficient
Algebra is working toward creating rules that you can use repeatedly in order to solve difficult problems
When making a rule, you need to decide which will be your variable\s
higher order indices are not like terms
Helps to re-arrange the like terms by writing them together
