Registration/Lottery Process

WRIT 1301 "University Writing" only allows PSEO students to enroll in a few PSEO-reserved seats before the semester starts. 

Due to the course's high demand and limited number of PSEO-reserved seats, the PSEO Office handles the enrollment of its students into WRIT 1301 via a lottery system.

• In May and December before registration for PSEO students opens, students can fill out a form to request enrollment in WRIT 1301. Enrollment is assigned via a lottery system, with preference given to graduating high school seniors and seniors who need WRIT 1301 to fulfill high school graduation requirements.

• An email will be sent to all students prior to registration describing the WRIT 1301 registration process.

Important Notes

• WRIT 1301 gears its teaching towards writing at the U of M and using U of M resources. If you're strongly considering going elsewhere for college, it may be worth considering other English options.

• WRIT 1201 is not open to PSEO students. 

DO NOT take WRIT 1301 if:

• You have successfully passed (with a 4 or higher) either the AP Literature Composition or (4 or higher) AP Language Composition exams and plan to attend the U of M. The U of M grants students WRIT 1301 credit with these exams.) See the Placement Tests/Auditions page for more information.

• You have successfully taken a course at another PSEO institution that transfers to the U of M Twin Cities as a "first year writing course" (per the tag from transferology.com) and you plan to attend the U of M. Courses with this tag will fulfill the U of M's first year writing requirement. See the example below:

Overview

WRIT 1301 requests will be assigned via lottery. All requests will be processed after the form closes. No preference is given based on the time of form submission.

PSEO seats may be available; students will be notified in late July.

Continuing Students (admitted 2023-24)

Wed, May 22 - Lottery Opens

Thu, May 30 @ Noon - Lottery Closes

Students will be emailed May 30-31 with the results of the lottery.

Instructions

Complete and submit the form to request enrollment in one of the WRIT 1301 sections for the upcoming semester. 

Your enrollment request will be entered into a lottery, with preference given to high school seniors and seniors who need WRIT 1301 to fulfill their high school graduation requirements. 

If indicating in this form that you are a senior who needs WRIT 1301 to fulfill your high school graduation requirements, you must first confirm with your high school counselor that your school will not accept other U of M courses to fulfill those requirements.

Course seats are not guaranteed. You should prepare a backup to this course.
