Mr. Jones was the ace pitcher of the JT baseball team that were Athens County League Champions in 1959.

Mr. Jones is a former three time United States Heavyweight Kickboxing Champion and was the first inductee elected to the National Kickboxing Hall of Fame. He fought in Madison Square Garden and still operates Sam's Gym on High Street in Glouster. Mr. Jones trains young people to be "champions in life" and has be given numerous awards by governors in both Ohio and West Virginia. For 20 years he was the boxing coach at Ohio University. He was inducted into the Ohio Senior Citizen Hall of Fame in 2017. He received the Cornwell Award in 2019. He continues to organize boxing benefits for the local community including "Boxing for Books" to support the Trimble Local Textbook Committee and "Brats & Boxing" to support the Hocking College Scholarship Program. The lifetime achievement award for the Heritage Ohio and Ohio's Hill Country Heritage is named "The Sam Jones Award" in his honor.
