As a guard and defensive end on the football team, Mr. Carter helped Glouster to their best records of the 1950s finishing second in the Muskingum Valley League in both the 1956 and 1957 football seasons. Playing positions that typically don't get mentioned in newspaper reports, Mr. Carter's play was singled out in multiple articles during his senior season. At the conclusion his senior year, he was the only player selected first team for both offense and defense in the MVL.

Mr. Carter is generally regarded as one of the best athletes in southeastern Ohio during this time, which was in an era before All-District teams were selected.
