The 1989 football team began the season on the road at Minford few in numbers (20) and small in size. Ten weeks later they capped perfect season by beating Nelsonville-York winning a Tri-Valley Conference championship and earning a spot in the OHSAA playoffs.
Fitting with the old football saying of "offense sells tickets and defense wins championships" the 1989 Tomcats gave up a total of 46 points in the regular season. In that span nine of the ten games saw the Trimble opponents held to either a shut out or a single score. At the conclusion of the season they held the school record for most shut-outs in a season, fewest points allowed in a season, as well as most passing touchdowns in a game (6 against Centennial).
