Visual Direction
The WomXn In Tech campaign makes use of the purple seen on the International Women's Day logo - while we cannot use the logo, the colour acts as our "nod" to it.
We are making a strong and bold stance, and as such we have aimed to depict this visually through the use of the geometric pattern. The shapes emphasize a feeling of strength and connectedness - it establishes the building blocks that we are piecing together as ALX in creating this space and showing we are proud to be a part of this movement.
With ALX going in a more tech centered approach - the pattern has been inspired by a Motherboard with our X at the center.
While the purple is a dominant colour for the month of March - our Software Engineering yellow and blue still play into the design for programme recognition.
The pattern consistently used throughout can be seen here:

Define and communicate the value of our programmes in addressing the need for greater diversity in tech and the participation of women to innovate and create solutions for a diverse world. For that, we are building an awareness and conversion campaign with the goal of onboarding an all-women Software Engineering cohort in March and kicking off an ongoing effort to improve the ratio of women in our programmes. This campaign aims to inspire young women across Africa to choose ALX as the space to learn the skills they need to launch their careers.
In celebration of International Women’s Day, 8 March 2023 (IWD 2023), ALX is launching a special campaign to raise awareness around our first-ever all-female Software Engineering cohort, providing an opportunity for up to 50,000 women across Africa to launch their careers in one of the most exciting and in-demand fields on the planet. Celebrated for well over a century, International Women's Day honours the achievements of women throughout the globe and marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality. Aligned with the mission of ALX, IWD 2023 aims to recognise the women who are championing the advancement of transformative technology and digital education.
At ALX, we believe in the vital importance of bridging the digital gender divide in Africa and increasing the representation of women in tech. With this cohort, we are demonstrating our commitment to transforming the status quo and empowering women throughout the continent to be at the helm of the global tech revolution.
Thanks to our partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, we are proud to offer sponsored placements to thousands of young women who meet the eligibility requirements for this world-class programme, equipping them with the skills to enter high-growth career paths in the global digital economy.
The gender divide among software developers is one of the starkest in the digital economy - and we are seeking to change that. We encourage women to take advantage of the myriad opportunities that software engineering has to offer, inviting them to start their careers in tech, build their companies in tech, and engage a powerful peer community that will propel them forward.
In response to the rallying cry we heard from many of the women who have participated in our programmes, we seek to create a space for women at ALX to excel, thrive and lead. The inaugural female cohort will cultivate a collaborative environment for learning and growth, supporting women from the start of their training and throughout their career journeys as part of the exclusive and diverse community of tech professionals in The ROOM.
As Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, recently stated, “There is no good excuse for the lack of women in tech,” adding that “the essence of technology and its effect on humanity depends upon women being at the table.”
We echo this sentiment, with diversity and inclusivity at the core of our mission at ALX. Indeed, we know that our collective future depends upon a female voice, a female brain, and her perspective in devising solutions for the world of tomorrow. Through our ‘WomXn and Tech’ campaign, we are boldly proclaiming our call to action for women throughout Africa to not just have a seat at the table - but to redesign the table.
Inspired by the UN theme for IWD 2023 - ‘DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality’ - we are championing the thousands of women who have already graduated from our programmes and who are part of our vibrant tech community in The ROOM, celebrating their role in driving innovative solutions for the continent’s big challenges.
At ALX, we know that innovation is a critical component in the development of any new technology - and diverse teams develop more innovative ideas, tackling problems holistically through multiple perspectives. In light of this, we look forward to welcoming our new cohort of women into ALX as they embark on their journeys into software engineering. These are the women who will be designing solutions for our communities, cities, countries and the virtual world. They will be at the forefront of Africa’s trajectory into the 4th Industrial Revolution.
The campaign is designed with the ultimate goal to teach leads to drive innovation and ultimately develop the mindset and confidence to become a future female leader in STEM.
Steering away from a potentially condescending message around ‘empowering women’ and more around solving the necessity for diverse communities in tech to build better solutions.
It would be used to fill the ALX SE March cohort (15th Feb campaign start, application close date 15th March. Cohort start 27th March.)
