Head Prefects 2022-23

The time has come to announce our new team of head prefects for the next academic year. It was a memorable occasion as we were able to gather Year 13 for the first, and last, time as they come to the end of their studies. We also welcomed the parents of our outgoing prefects, who were finally able to address an audience of their peers as they undertook their final formality of what has been an incredible reign as Head Prefects.

We have increased the size of the team this year for two very important reasons. Firstly, to recognise the exceptional quality of the candidates this year. It was an impossible decision that we had to make, but an impossibility I am very proud to ponder, as it highlights the outstanding work that happens every day in every classroom, in every year group. This group of students did not reach the level they are at overnight, nor was it easy. But here they are, an example to all that hard work pays off.

Secondly, we recognise the ever evolving nature of the head prefect role and we want to recognise its importance by appointing a team to ensure a balance between duties and academic studies. This year, the bar has certainly been raised in that respect, as the outgoing head prefect team have redefined what it means to represent the student body and what is possible to achieve.

Kaviesh, Charlotte, Tamara and Anoushka have been a tenacious advocate for the students and providing opportunities to extend knowledge, learning and enjoyment further beyond the classroom. They have transformed student leadership to a level not seen before, they have challenged myself and Mr Maguire on a weekly basis, both in our thinking and our decision making. All whilst maintaining their academic studies and applying to some of the most prestigious universities in the world. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with them and watch them grow into the remarkable young adults they are. All four of them have incredible futures ahead and I look forward to seeing them continue to push the boundaries of what is supposed to be possible and where it will take them.

Have a safe, relaxing holiday, I look forward to seeing where next term takes us.

Tennis Success

Congratulations to Sophie De Boer, who recently became the BBK Junior Open Tennis Champion, hosted by the Bahrain Tennis Club.

"My opponent was a tough player and she played a good match, especially when at times I felt like I was playing against two people, the whole community fan club who came to support her and at the same time play against her. So it was no surprise I knew I was going to be in for a rough ride. But I played a very good match, always keeping it cool and making sure I was in control. When I won, the crowd on the new centre court applauded my victory with dignitaries standing in ovation. It was only then, I knew I had became the best junior tennis player in Bahrain beating my opponent 6-2 6-3. "

Arabic

Congratulations to Ali Ali, who combined his IT skills with his compassion for others to tell a lovely story about a boy who was bullied by his friends. The moral of the story is to be kind to each other and respect that everyone has their own strengths and talents. Well done Ali.

The Monthly - March Issue

In celebration of many successful endings and hopeful beginnings, it is our honour to present you with the March Issue Liberation and Loss. This issue is packed full of challenging content that we hope all of our readers will love. From articles on the military conflict in Ukraine all the way to an exploration of the limited exposure given to violence against women, this issue is sure to cover pertinent topics.

March has led us, the editors, to say a teary goodbye to this wonderful Monthly community. The Monthly has been one of our greatest liberations, and something that we will always cherish. Yet, with every liberation comes some loss, so it is only right that we say a heartfelt goodbye and thank our readers for their continued support.

We would like to congratulate and applaud Wasan Al Zayani, who has been chosen as Editor’s Choice for this month. Her professionalism and eloquence in her recent article has been compelling in outlining the exclusion of women of colour in medical fields.

We would also like to take this opportunity to announce the editors for next year: Manaal Khan, Dia Nanda and Callum Laing. In this issue we present their ambitions as well as communicate our final farewells. Lastly, make sure to follow our Instagram @themonthly_ for more information about everything related to our magazine, and email us if you are interested in being a Graphic Designer for The Monthly.

In these past years, thank you for all of the support and warmth that has been given to us from the school community. It has been both an honour and a pleasure to be able to facilitate the student voice and we are excited for its growth under the new Editors.

With Love for the final time,

Co-Editors-in-Chief

Spirit Week

It has been a wonderful, celebratory week of school spirit, positivity, sport and International culture. The carefully chosen themes of each day, representing specific BSB values and generating much excitement, all added to a superb atmosphere around the school. Today's international day, with it's flag parade, student concert and 'soak the teacher' saw a fantatstic amount raised for charity, which will be donated to the Red Cross Charity. By popular demand and thanks to the generous donations made, Mr Ridgway even made a last minute appearance to take a soaking, much to the delight of the crowds.

A big thank you to the 6th form social committee and Head Prefect team for their hard work to make this week a success and also for joining the soaking, and big thanks also to Ms Ferguson, and those fortunate teachers who had volunteered to be involved but missed out, for agreeing to be soaked!

Al Areen Run

On the 11th of march my twin sister (Yara) and I participated in the Al Areen Run 2022 which took place in the AlAreen Wildlife Park. It was a race for both adults and kids from all ages. We participated in the 800M run for kids from ages 10 to 11 years. Out of the 80 participants from our age group I placed 10th.

This was such an exciting race to participate in for both of us, and it was an amazing experience for Yara as it was her first run. We hope to participate in more races in the future.

BSME Race 4 Good

The past week and a half has seen the start of the BSME Race4Good 2022 edition, with two teams entering from the BSB against a plethora of other schools within the Middle East. Within this Global Youth League students are challenged to immerse themselves within another country, culture and wholly different societal situation to their own in order to offer viable solutions to communities in extreme need. This year's race sees teams focusing on a vulnerable community in Haiti, a country rocked by political unrest, natural disaster and organised crime.

Through the opening round our students were challenged to uplift a Haitian family, and provide viable solutions and strategies to enable them to make more sustainable income, and have immediate impact within their lives. In each challenge of the Race4Good, the winning team from the BSME region sees their solution actively utilised within the country and community that they design it for.

Our two teams have demonstrated the empathy, awareness and holistic ability to consider a wide variety of societal, medical and financial factors to design truly inventive and thoughtful solutions within the opening round. They have sacrificed their own time selflessly and have worked undeniably well within their teams to produce detailed videos, documents and wholescale plans.

In the judging panel process, hosted on Wednesday with all schools tuning in, they presented their overall business plan and strategies, contending with questioning from humanitarian judges and providing excellent responses.

In a brilliant achievement, we are delighted to announce that both of our BSB teams have now qualified for the final round, which involves four teams in total and begins today! One of our teams also took first place after the judging process, and will now see their solution for the family actively implemented on the ground in Haiti in the days to come - a truly excellent achievement, and one that both they and we cannot wait to see the impact of.

World Scholars Cup Update

The World Scholars Cup Global Round 2022 to be held in Dubai is in full swing of preparations. After the success of the regional round at the British School of Bahrain, we now have 94 students (31 teams) registered to attend the global round. 45 students from the senior division (Years 9-11) and 48 students from the junior division (Years 7-9) will compete for a place in the Tournament of Champions, held at the prestigious Yale University, USA.

The preparations include a Sunday Debate club and Monday Collaborative Writing Club held between 3-4pm. We would like to extend our gratitude to our Sixth form students, who have previously succeeded from the WSC and Tournament of Champions in helping our new students catch up with the skills required to achieve better. An excellent example of collaborative learning.

Practical Work in Food Technology

Year 7 have been in the kitchen working with the hob for their latest practical task, they have been boiling pasta and making and seasoning a tomato sauce. May I take this opportunity to remind all students to bring a reusable container to practical lessons to be able to take your delicious food home; let's protect our environment together.

Sunday 3:15pm - Drum Squad

Monday 2:30pm - Infant Choir

Monday 3:15pm - Junior Choir

Monday 3:15pm - Advanced Performers Class (GCSE, A Level, ABRSM and YMOG preparation)

Wednesday 3:00pm - Ukulele Club

Wednesday 3:15pm - Piano Class

Wednesday 3:15pm - Orchestra (Grade 2+ standard required)

Ensembles and Music Clubs are a great way to learn new musical skills with others and is a supplement to the weekly music lesson.

Playing with others, be it in a class, band, ensemble or an orchestra, can deliver a number of benefits to a musician. These include:

· Encourages you to listen to how others play and exposes you to different sounds and approaches.

· Encourages you to listen harder to your own sound.

· In combination of the first two points, encourages you to listen to how your sound blends with others in terms of quality, tone colour, volume and dynamics

· Encourages you to listen and “feel” the music in synchronisation with others.

· To look up from a score and watch someone else for cues, timing and pulse.

· Maintaining a steady even pulse resisting the urge to push on or pull things back.

· Pushes you a little beyond your comfort zone in playing things you wouldn’t otherwise play on your own

· Improves sight-reading and technique

· Increases musical understanding and appreciation of working with others to achieve a musical outcome.

And, one of the most important of all, the joy of creating music together!!

Bahrain Road Runners

The runners were out and about last Friday, competiting at a Bahrain Road Runners event at Al Areen Wildlife Park. The temperature hit 38 degrees but that didn't stop Hriday Dawani setting himself a PB and achieving 5th place with a time of 3.02.38 over the one kilometre distance and Heidi Edelman winning the 12-14 girls race. As Bahrain heats up, there will only be a few training sessions left before Ramadan if anyone would like to join us!

Sports Term 2022

BSSL Sports League

BSB were back in action this week in the 2nd round of the BSSL against Riffa Views International School.

The U19 boys basketball team continued to dominate with a 68 - 22 victory. Stand-out performances from Daniel Agbonkpolor and debutant Talal Kazerooni now put BSB in position for a championship showdown against Bahrain School.

The U15 girls football team were hoping to continue their winning streak after last week's 4 - 3 thriller. However, the girls faced quality opposition and were without 3 key players going into the fixture. Despite a spirited comeback, BSB eventually finished the game 4 - 1 down with Riffa taking the win.

The U15 boys football team looked to right the wrongs from the previous week and get back to winning ways and did not disappoint. A huge 9 - 2 victory has restored confidence in the players and Mr Gibson, who was delighted with the performance.

The U13 football teams prepare for the Thursday afternoon fixture with the girls looking for their first victory and the boys aiming to continue their winning run, following a 7 - 3 win over Bayan. Ayad and Diego both scored a brace, with other goals coming from Ali A, Micah and Daniel Al Saie.

They attended a panel discussion centred around the success of women breaking into male dominated fields, under the theme of #BreakTheBias.

BSB Student Led Business Forum

Student Led-Forums Khaled’s review

Hosting our first lecture was thankfully a massive success in our opinion. Bringing in Ms. Fairooz was an eye opener to I feel not only Sophia and I, but to the other 52 students that attended the talk. She taught us that: “sky's the limit” and that “leadership isn't taught, its caught”. It was a refreshing change to some students that have never sat in a lecture about Business and Entrepreneurship. It was interesting listening to stories told by Ms. Fairooz about her experience in the business world. This was an excellent opportunity for myself and Sophia. We worked for hours to find the right person to come - trying to contact people whilst not knowing them personally was a challenge starting from ground zero but we adapted fast! We learnt lots of things from how to branch out to more connections, maintaining and building them, as well as improving the organising process for student capacity and timing to ensure the best experience for our students. Overall this is just the beginning and we will get more, bigger and better stuff coming up from the B&E forum. Be on the lookout!

Student-Led Forums demonstrated how beneficial a learning process they are for students this week as the Business and Entrepreneurship forum invited and arranged preparations for Ms Mashael Farooz (from Bahrain’s Biban) to explain her career pathways and answered questions on entrepreneurship from our eager students. With over 50 students in attendance, this highlighted how the forums are more than just a gathering of like-minded students but a powerhouse for sharing, developing knowledge and how mature our BSB students are when leading with initiative.

To quote Ms Farooz, “It was a pleasure meeting you and the learners, I indeed witnessed the passion and motivation in all. I congratulate you and BSB for for the quality of education you are providing and wish to see the next generation leading in all aspects.”

Sports Term 2022

We have seen some amazing performances and are impressed with the students' competitive spirit. Rounders and Athletics competitions will start in the coming weeks. All finalists will qualify for our Sports Term 2022 Finals night on Tuesday 29th March. This is a chance for us to celebrate the return of competitive sport and an opportunity for family members and friends to see the students in action. We are very impressed with not only all players and athletes but also to Marissa Keam in Year 11 who has taken all photos of the sports so far. To keep up to date with what is happening such as fixtures, pictures and results, please visit www.bsbhsport.com and click on Sports Term 2022.

Senior House Sports Finals - A3.pdf

Sports Fixtures

This week saw the return of the Bahrain School Sports League with the U19’s competing in Basketball and the U15 & U13 in Football, all against league debutants Bahrain Bayan.

The U19 boys basketballers started the week with a 26 - 20 victory. Captained by Ahmed Haffadh, the senior boys impressed with disciplined defence and a fast, creative offence which saw their opponents frustrated and forced to shoot from range, allowing the seniors to control the game at both ends of the court and remained steadfast for the first win of the season.

The U15 girls footballers followed suit and picked up a first season win, beating Bayan 4-3. Goals from Leah Al Ojaimi and debut player Skye Mathieson secured the win in the hard fought contest and they now look to continue their form going into next week's fixture at Riffa Views.

The week's hat-trick of wins wasn’t to be, however as the U15 boys footballers lost 4-3 despite leading 3-1 going into the last 10 mins. Goals from Esteban Nieto Cuervo, Carlos Rojas and Alessandro Erbi seemed to be enough, but a spirited Bayan comeback and some defensive issues saw BSB fall short. Despite the loss, Coach Mr Gibson remained upbeat by saying ‘we dominated for the majority of the game and the lads all played fantastic. We have some issues we need to address at training, but I’m confident we will pick up a win in the next fixture’

Instrumental Music Afternoon

It was great to see parents and students enjoying the ‘Instrumental Information Afternoon’ on Wednesday 9th March. Students watched expert performances by Zain (Y11, Guitar), Han (Y9, Violin) and the BSME Young Musicians of the Gulf prize winner for best Bahrain based musician, Ali Khalifah (Y6, Piano). Zain, our GCSE representative student commented “Music is a great way of expressing oneself, and to give that opportunity to other students is the least I can do as a musician” as he supported young guitarists interested in having lessons. Other students (including instrumentalists already on the programme) played the Oboe, Violin, Cello, Saxophone and Clarinet never previously having the opportunity of trying. If you are interested in joining the Instrumental and Vocal programme, the application form can be found here. Please do not hesitate contacting the team on instrumentalmusic@thebsbh.com for more information.

Thursday 1st Break, saw the introduction of music in the playground. If you would like to play the drums, please join in every week at 10am.

World Book Day 3rd March

We have enjoyed celebrating World Book Day in the senior school today, with students demonstrating their creativity through some fantatsic outfits. During English lessons, students were able to present their favourite books to their class, which allowed our most passionate readers to shine as they confidently talked about what they love so much about the books.

Around the World in 80 Days

I am extremely proud to have been able to direct this wonderful play in what has been a difficult time for all. We actually started rehearsing this show in the Spring of last year, but due to lockdowns and school closures, we were only now able to perform it. And yet our wonderful young people have remained constant in their dedication to bring this fantastic story to the stage.

Of course to us, circumnavigating the globe in 80 days seems like a very long time! However, in 1878 when the play was set this was an amazing feat. Laura Eason script manages to capture the humour and sense of fun of Jules Verne’s original novel and it has been a labour of love to bring it to life.

I am so proud of each and every cast member, backstage crew and all involved in making this what proved to be an amazing return to the stage for BSB.

There will be more to come! The next production will be in June when the year 5 & 6 production of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, directed by our very own Mrs Mullane hits the stage.

Watch this space for more Senior productions in the Autumn term.

Gail Knappett

Director of Whole School Drama

From Y7 all the way up to Y12, a mathematically precise journey is made around the world. I tried not to show it, but I hadn’t been that nervous in a really long time. It was a year-long process to ensure that all 33 scenes were perfectly crafted. From wooden elephants, to sledges, to a friendship that starts and ends in London, to a beautiful and romantic love story beginning in Bombay and ending in a street with a flower seller in London. The bittersweet frenemy dynamic between Passepartout and Fix, all wrapped into a single performance. I truly and genuinely hope people enjoyed it just as much as the cast and crew have.

BSME Golf Championships

Two of our most dedicated golfers participated in the BSME Golf Championship, held in Dubai over half term. Mihir and Javier competed against some of the region's best golfers at the Montgomerie Golf Course. Competing over two days and achieving very respectful finishing places, both boys have represented the school with distinction. Course organisers commented on not only how strong the competition was but just how well each of our boys conducted themselves during the event. Well done to both Mihir and Javier!

Duke of Edinburgh International Award

Last weekend, under the guidance of our DofE leader Mr Yunus, saw nearly 40 students undertake the International Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Expedition. They were accompanied by an adventurous and committed team of teachers.

Students across Y10 and Y11 walked a total of 24km, across 2 days, in the desert. The outdoor experience continued through the evening as students cooked their own food on Trangia’s, set up tents and camped on school grounds, which was a truly unique experience. This weekend we will see an additional 30 students undertake a similar challenge. This makes this year the highest number of students participating in the DofE award in the past several years at BSB.

Engineering Trip to University of Bahrain

The BTEC Engineering group at the BSB, led by Dr Al-Jourani, visited the Electrical and Electronic (E&E) Department at the University of Bahrain (UoB) at Isa town on Wednesday 2 March 2022.

Students of BSB received a guided tour and talk by Dr Mohammed Al Khalidy. Our students learned about the difference between high and low current, the digital and analogue signals, microprocessors and the other projects with control systems, over 3 hours of tour, talk with Q&A and lab demo. This was followed by another tour by Dr Omar of the Mechanical Engineering Department, gaining experience of the university’s mechanical workshop. They looked at machines, tools and other student’s projects.

The BTEC students completed the trip by gaining some valuable experience and knowledge of the Further education in Engineering sector.

Young Musicians of the Gulf

Congratulations to Ali Alkhalifah for reaching the Semi-Final of the Young Musicians of the Gulf 2022. The standard was extremely high this year with almost 80 instrumentalists taking part from 18 schools across the Gulf region. Ali reached the last 18 instrumentalists in the competition with expert performances of Chopin’s Etude ‘Black Key’ and Beethoven's ‘Moonlight’ Sonata 3rd Movement. The Semi-Final is an amazing achievement for a student who is just 11 years old. We await the awards ceremony on Thursday evening with excitement, but whatever the result we are proud of Ali’s achievement and outstanding musical performances.

Beyond BSB

A new student led initiative under our Beyond BSB programme as part of our enrichment lecture series was introduced this week with Renad Alfarden presenting her thought provoking lecture on “Confronting our Misogynistic thinking”. This lecture demonstrated how articulate and empassioned our students are about current and important affairs and the recognition of which their generation can help shape society and the future.

Year 12 University Process

For Y12 Parents, students have already begun their University application process and are busy working on the initial stages via our school subscribed platform, Unifrog.

Alumni News

This week we were very pleased to have a request for a meeting from Arcapita. The esteemed company are searching for a high calibre candidate to join their Bahrain headquarters and want to contact interested parties of our 2014-2018 Alumni. Another wonderful indication of the high standards which our students achieve and the worldwide recognition BSB has.

BSME Golf Championships

We would like to wish both Mihir and Javier the best of luck as they travel to Dubai to represent BSB at the 2022 BSME Golf Championships next week. The championship will take place over two days, where both students will be competing against other top golfers in the region. It promises to be an excellent opportunity for both of our golfers to showcase their talents.

World Scholars Cup - 11-12 February 2022

We were absolutely delighted to host the first World Scholars Cup Bahrain round in over two years last weekend. It was an incredible weekend which saw incredible spirit, collaboration, camaraderie, and dedication shine through in the highly competitive competitions. Huge thanks go to Mr Motara and Ms Hughes-Swick for their constant leadership, guidance and support for the students, and their unwavering commitment to the programme. Without Mr Motara as the driving force behind the BSB efforts to put the event together, it would not have been the outstanding success it was. Well done to Mr Motara, Ms Hughes-Swick and all of our BSB World Scholars!

Bahrain Sports Day - 10th February 2022

Students thoroughly enjoyed the additional sporting opportunities on offer throughout the day in the senior school, in recognition of Bahrain national sports day 2022. Students and teachers took part in table tennis at both break times with some very fortunate students managing to beat the teachers! In addition to this, students had a basketball competition outside on the playground and enjoyed the skipathon challenge. An enjoyable, sporting day for all.

Safer Internet Day - 8th February 2022

Students have been engaged in discussions and activities all week surrounding staying safe online. Computer science, PSHE lessons, assemblies, form time and even subjects such as Arabic and Islamic studies have included links and information. Staying safe online is of great importance in our increasingly digital world, and our aim is to keep students and parents informed of the latest trends and guidance to manage online threats.

Inter House Competiton

Year 9 and 10 stepped up this week to continue the Inter House competitions. Look out for further competitions and activities coming up over the course of this term.

Beyond BSB- Student Led Forums

Two new student Forum leaders have been appointed this week for Business and Entrepreneurship and Engineering in addition to our Medicine and Health Sciences forum. Our BSB community is enriched with parents in a variety of fields which are an inspiration to our students. If you feel you may be able to offer your time to speak about your experience in these areas, please contact Mr Belcher (belchern@thebsbh.com)

Universities

November to January is always a nervous time for Y13 students (and their teachers) as applications are finalised and await offers. From this point on, different countries, Universities and Colleges have their own processing timelines and offer dates. Offers for the US are likely to come later in the term. In the meantime, we are exceptionally proud of our students and the commitment that they have demonstrated to achieve their next steps which we continue to support, guide and nurture. Currently, we have 91 offers with over a third of these at top Russell Group Universities in addition to 2 unconditional offers for the US including NYU (Abu Dhabi).

Preparing for tomorrow, today

The current climate and fast-paced world in which we live often means that students are already planning tomorrows steps, yesterday. To accommodate this and to build on the motivation provided by our current Y13's, Key stage 3 and 4 will be receiving a form next week in which students can submit any thoughts or intentions which they are having towards specific Universities, countries or even courses which they have started to think about. Please note that these early decisions by Key stage 3 are not binding or expected but we are ensuring that students considering these early (early) decisions already are catered for by various Beyond BSB, PSHE activities, Forums, workshops and guidance in school and perhaps prompt important conversations about hopes, dreams, realities and ambitions at home.

Big Question

Congratulations to our wonderful entries for The BSB Big Question Winter Series, with inventions and explanations on Aquaponics, Sustainable environmental inventions, prototypes for health and Fitness Smartwatch apps, Recycling and social impact devices and a remote control recycling bin to assist disabled and older generations, there once again was no shortage of talent on display. Inspired by these wonderful concepts, we are looking at potential ways of developing them into a larger scale to have a positive eco effect on our environment.

Turning some current yellow status into a positive, we have really enjoyed doing individual interviews with some of our Big Question Entries this week and they feature in our special Winter Series Creative Inventions Film.

Medicine and Health Sciences Forum

Mariam Ali in Y12, who leads our Medicine and Health Sciences Forum as part of our developing Forum series, organised and led a wonderful webinar with Dr. Nasreen Alsayed on Wednesday evening. A fantastic, real and enthusiastic insight into the specialised area of Endocrinology was attended by students globally as part of the Inspired STEM leadership committee. Mariam has taken to her responsibility with vigour and we are very proud to see her forum blossoming. A huge thank you to Dr. Alsayed, a member of our BSB community for the valuable time which she gave to our inspiring students.

Girl Up Bahrain

The Girl Up Bahrain club, based in BSB, is a student-led initiative which aims to educate all young girls of the legislative rights they have, and to shed light on important events and issues impacting women around the globe. Currently, We are writing and publishing a children's book for girls aged 6-10 in collaboration with many Girl Up clubs across MENA. The book draws on legislation nationally and internationally and aims to educate girls about what their rights are through a character that acts as a role model, maybe even a friend. Girls are never told what their rights are, and many grow up being oppressed because they're unaware of them, it is important for every girl to know each of her rights if we are to achieve equality and development. We hope this book reaches a wide audience, so that we leave a good and lasting impression of our club and its important values. Hopefully it will lead us to continue to work on empowering projects in the future.

Alumni

We are incredibly grateful to and proud of our former student who graduated 2 years ago, Rishi Malhotra. Rishi has given his time to Years 9, 10,11,12 and 13 to discuss his experiences in applying and succeeding during his time at Ivy League,Cornell University in the US. The students really benefit from Alumni experiences as both inspiration but also motivation for our extremely capable and aspirational students. Rishi has developed a fellowship programme that has enabled students to take part in his highly successful coding and programming super curricular tutorial activity Code Bozu https://codebozu.com/

A Level PE

Year 12 have been looking at motor neurons and as part of their learning they made model replicas. Those students at home used household items and those in school used their playdoh tubs to create their motor neurons. To extend their learning they have made jamboards about how they work and their roles in muscle contraction.

Universities

As applications are completed and the majority of Y13 students have made their applications to aspirational and world-class Universities around the globe with support from the University guidance team to meet early deadlines. High ranking Universities and colleges have started their promotion to reach British School of Bahrain students and marketing for the following year already; highlighting the efforts which BSB go to highlight the importance of early preparation. Oxford Royale being one of these for students aged 8-12 and 13-18 to attend one of their super curricular summer camps, parents and students can find enrolment and course details on this link

The Big Question Winter Series

Students are finalising their inventions ready to begin setting up their exhibition pieces on Sunday and Monday this coming week. This series rather than running a live walkabout, students will be interviewed on the 17th with their presentations and feature in a special Big Question "Walkabout" film which will be published via school communication and social media on the 18th January.

Model United Nations

An exquisite opportunity to discuss deeply stressing issues worldwise and spend the entirety of the 2 days of the IKMUN conference presenting sustainable and practical resolutions for these concerning issues. The IKMUN conference’s topics ranged from the rights of peaceful protesters to the environmental impact of cryptocurrency. From the issue of sustainability of fast fashion to ethnic diversity in motorsports. From the implementation of agri-tech to transnational criminal influence in the Northern Triangle.

Delegates from BSB described their experience as ‘a wonderful experience filled with passionate debates’ and having ‘absorbed a great amount of worldly knowledge.’

- Veda Varma 11A

During the IKMUN Conference, I had a wonderful experience filled with passionate debates and I was elated to receive the best delegate plaque. The UNESCO council tackled important matters regarding journalist safety and confidentiality which seemed daunting at first as my country had controversial views on the matter at hand. However — several debates and allies laters — I had overcome my nervousness and was grateful to have been given a chance to defend such a stance. I've made friends, gained experience, and made great memories."

-Dana Ahmed 12E

"Being my first ever MUN, the IKMUN VIII conference was an ideal starting point. I absorbed a great amount of worldly knowledge during the in-council (UNFCCC) debates, my fellow delegates expressing their country’s stance, and my own research towards the completion of the position papers. The organization was impressive, with a range of resources provided to aid our discussions, and the perfect amount of council members to connect with."

The Pearl Trail

Congratulations to Yousif Kazerooni, who took part in the SAADA National Day Walk back in December. It was arranged by "Bahrain Road Runners" celebrating the National Day of Bahrain.

"The walk started from the SAADA project then we went to Aboo Mahar Fort. After that, we started the Pearl Route and when we completed the pearl route we ended up in Souq Al Gasaria. There were around 250 participants and I was the youngest participant, it started from 7am to 9pm. It was such a great experience which I learnt alot from and I'm looking forward to participating in more of these types of events and representing the British school of Bahrain in the best way possible.

Here are some photos of me as well as interesting facts about the famous old houses we passed (in Arabic language)."

Food Technology Update

Year 9 have been working in the kitchen developing their marinating skills and working with raw poultry. The aroma of the chicken and vegetable fajitas they've been making have been wafting around the corridors while they develop their food hygiene and safety while producing a well presented healthy and tasty dish.

Engineering Trip

A group of Y10 were involved in an Education Trip to a Manufacturing and process Engineering Workshop here in Bahrain. They learned about different manufacturing process involved in engineering. Exciting time for these young Engineers at BSB.

"After working hard for an entire term, I was pleased to go on a memorable school trip to visit an engineering facility. This trip helped me learn more about how engineers operate and also allowed me to gain experience in order to better identify my future goals.

On this visit I was able to find answers to many of my questions and found the inspiration I wanted. This has inspired me and encouraged me to consider taking an engineering course for my A-Levels and potentially becoming an engineer in the future."

National Day 15th December

Our National Day Celebration was a great way to end the first term, bringing the whole school together to be entertained by a range of performances and activities. All students, staff and visitors had a wonderful morning. The joyous atmosphere walking the array of pop up stalls and performances was simply breathtaking. I am already excited for next year's event. A heartfelt thanks to the Arabic, Citizenship and Islamic Studies team across the whole school, Mr Mzoughi, Ms Menhinick and Mr and Mrs Belcher for all their efforts in making it such a successful day.

COBIS Debate Competition

The BSB students did themselves really proud in this competition, working hard to prepare themselves for a totally different style of debating to what they're used to. It was a gruelling weekend schedule with long days and working late into the evening to compensate for differeing time zones. Our teams were made up of Y12 and Y10 students and they were competing against polished Y13s. Both teams won several debates but unfortunately didn't get into the finals this time. Pratham Mehrotra was chosen as a Star Speaker by the judges though so we look forward to what he and the rest of the students can do next year!

A big congratulations and thank you to all students and also the staff who accompanied the students throughout for support and guidance leading up to and throughout the competition.

More running success!

Running club members Heidi and Sama raced at BIC, organised by Bahrain Road runners, on 10th December. Heidi took 1st place in 12-14yo 1km race in a time of 3min30, which is incredible running.

Looking ahead

As we enter the new Term and look forward to everything to come, please enjoy a selection of photos from the last week of Term 1. All activities posted are from December, during green status.
