BSME U13 Games

Best of luck to our U13 team, who have landed safely in Dubai ahead of the BSME Games this weekend. They have trained hard, prepapred well, and we wish them nothing but success over the next couple of days.

Open Days

We were delighted to welcome the parents and students of Years 9 and 11 to our GCSE and 6th Form Open Evenings over the last two Tuesdays, to talk to them about the transition into the next stage, and the choices that are available to the students at this stage. It was great to meet and speak with so many parents about the wide variety of options and pathways on offer, in order to personalise the curriculum for every individual student. Our wonderful staff were on hand to answer all questions and help students and parents to make informed choices for their next steps. Parents and students now have access to the online forms to make their choices. You can also access our GCSE and 6th Form prospectuses by taking a look at our Options page of this blog.

Library Visit

This week the Junior & Senior Library hosted students from the Children's Academy who were completing a study unit about careers and what different professionals do in their daily lives. The students learned about what goes into the running of a school library including book orders, processing, circulation, and some interesting facts like our longest-ever overdue book being around 700 days overdue! Collaborating and forming connections with other schools in Bahrain is an important part of our ethos and we look forward to working with the Children's Academy again soon

Year 10 Geography Fieldtrip

Y10 Geography students visited Budaiya Beach and Northern (Salman) City Beach on Sunday to undertake fieldwork in their study of coastal environments. After several years without fieldwork, we had little equipment to use, which we made up for by problem solving and ingenuity. Instead of using clinometers, students downloaded an app which served a similar purpose. Instead of using ranging poles, students used their own bodies to help them measure the gradient. We used oranges in our measuring of longshore drift, because oranges are biodegradable and not harmful to the ocean if they didn't float back to us. We did field sketches (see the example by Nyall Thorpil) and took particle samples. We have a thorough grounding in how to measure longshore drift, how to make a beach profile, and how to use some specific pieces of equipment.

Very soon information will be coming out for the Y10 cohort's trip to Cyprus, scheduled for late June.

An Inspector Calls

Y10 English students thoroughly enjoyed reenacting the scenes from An Inspector Calls this week, to help with their understanding and analysis of the play.

Cross Curricular Links

Y13 History students stepped out of their comfort zone and used mathematical skills to create a graph demonstrating the extent to which colonial control had been established in Australia by 1829, and whether the aspects of control were positive or negative. The students annotated the graph to give greater detail to the points they had identified. At the conclusion of the task they were able to see visually that as control increased, the colonists experienced less benefit. They could also see that the First Nation people of Australia did not benefit from any aspect of colonial control, even though some policies were benevolent.

"A change is brought about because ordinary people do extraordinary things.” - Barack Obama

A warm welcome back to all families at the start of the Spring term. New Year is traditionally a time for reflection, looking ahead and setting new goals, which can instill a refreshed sence of vigour and motivation in people. Others already have both in abundance and are able to keep pushing towards their goals. Whichever type of person you are, it can also provide opportunity. A chance to try something new, to find hidden talents we never knew we had. I hope that 2023 can be a successful, rewarding year for all in our community, and that you stick to the goals you set out.

We have a busy start to 2023, with a range of trips and activities across the school, for which those involved will be looking forward to with anticipation. I look forward to sharing details of the outcome of those events and activities over the coming weeks.

To our students starting 2023 with examinations I wish you all well; the hard work has now been done, so see the examinations as the opportunity to demonstrate your expertise. As you will see below, we start 2023 with some tragic news, which I share with a heavy heart.

Mr Ridgway

Ms Susan Cullen: 1974-2023

BSB mourns the passing of Ms Susan Cullen, a highly respected senior school teacher from 2017 to 2021. Susan was a passionate scientist with a specialism in biology and chemistry. Her students enjoyed her classes and often shared her passion thanks to her delivery and influence. She was a larger than life personality, a very popular and supportive colleague who was always willing to go above and beyond for her students and peers. Her true passion was photography, which she voluntarily offered to the school community, through photographing events and activities both officially and unofficially, producing truly stunning photographs. She would spend many of her holidays on safari, photographing wildlife and it was her dream to live in Africa in order to spend more time on her photography. Many colleagues have been the subject of her work or have copies of it, as gifts from Susan, such was her warmth and generosity. Her loss will be felt throughout the senior school community and beyond, and we send our deepest condolences to Susan's family and friends at this very sad time.
