Respecting our Differences

Message from the Head Student Team

Ali, Valentina, Hadeel and Abdulrahman led today's assembly. In line with our 2023 focus on the six Cs, including Compassion, they reminded us of one of the best things about the BSB family - we respect all our differences. The world would be a very boring place if everyone was exactly the same, like a lot of identical robots. We are all different, and that is what is makes us unique. Even identical twins are different - people who know them well can always tell them apart. The Head Student Team received a well-deserved round of applause in the assembly for reminding everyone of such an important point. At the end of their presentation, they gave us a quotation from Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, an actress from India:

"No-one is perfect and everyone is different, but everyone is beautiful in their own way and that is what makes us special."

The six Cs are Communication, Challenge, Creativity, Consistency, Compassion and Compelling.

Transition from Year 6 to Year 7

I know what you're thinking. Slow down, Mr Howe! It's only January. Year 6 students still have more than five months before the summer holiday, and Year 7 starts after that, so it's too early to think about transition.

The thing is, time flies when you are busy and having fun, and those five months will go quickly. Yesterday, we had a meeting for Year 6 parents, to explain a few things about moving to Year 7.

BSB is a one-campus school, so moving from Year 6 to Year 7 is not a daunting prospect. It is wonderful to be able to complete our whole school education, from age 3 to age 18, in the safe, stimulating environment of The British School of Bahrain. The seniors' teachers look forward to welcoming new Year 7 students warmly.

For those parents who could not make it to the meeting, here is the slideshow that we shared.

Y5 & Y6 Sports Medals

Towards the end of last term, we held our annual Sports Day for Years 5 and 6 at Bahrain Rugby Football Club. Today was our first opportunity since then to present the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals to the finalists.

Here is a Google photo album of all who received their medals in today's assembly.

Here is the full list of medallists.

Well done to all who took part, and a big thank-you to Ms Gray and the PE department for organising a fantastic day of sport.

BSA Swimming Competition - Saturday 14 January

In other sports news, best wishes to the swimming team in Saturday's competition! I'm sure many good lengths will be swum by all.

New Junior Head Student Team

Many thanks to Leo, Jouri, Avani and Gatik for doing a splendid job as the first Head Student Team of this school year. They have been amazingly helpful in many ways, taking parents on tours of the school, running Thursday assemblies, keeping me informed of what is going on in the student community and attending lots of breaktime meetings.

Now it is time for the second Head Student Team to take up their positions.

From left to right, please welcome:

Head Girl: Valentina 6.06

Deputy Head Girl: Hadeel 6.06

Head Boy: Ali 6.01

Deputy Head Boy: Abdulrahman 6.02

I'm sure they will do a fantastic job in their new roles.

In the third term, we will announce the third and final head student team of the year.

Be a Cold and Flu Fighter

This week, Year 3 students received a very enjoyable, interactive health talk from School Nurse Anju, reminding us about the importance of taking necessary precautions to prevent the spread of cold and illness. In this health talk, students learned the importance proper hand washing - including all the steps. The students demonstrated cough/sneeze etiquette, and the importance of eating healthy foods and getting enough sleep. They also learned the value of good exercise, to boost immunity in this winter season, and how to get better quickly if we feel unwell.

Wet Weather

We are all glad the wet weather has gone away for the time being. However if the rain does appear again, please remember:

  • Children do not need umbrellas for break times. This is because the children will only be allowed to go outside at break if it is not raining. If it is raining, they will stay indoors for their break. When children are running and playing outside, umbrellas can be dangerous, because the struts are a hazard to eyes and faces.

Junior Duke Award - Platinum Award

Very well done to Maaria in class 6.03 for completing the Platinum Junior Duke Award, which is a super achievement.

The Junior Duke Award recognises young people's independence, maturity and growing skills set, as they prepare for their future in the grown-up world.

To gain the award, you have to sign up at the start of the school year, then complete a series of sensible challenges.

Looking forward to seeing more Junior Duke Award winners in upcoming blog posts.

Back to School

It was wonderful to welcome the junior students - those returning after the holiday, and those who are new to the BSB family - into school on Tuesday this week. Despite the damp, cloudy start to the term, warmth shone from the children's cheerful faces, their energy and enthusiasm promising a successful term ahead. I am very impressed, although not surprised, by how sensibly the children have responded to the wet weather and the modified daily routines it brings. No-one wanted to miss their outdoor breaks but everyone accepted the situation with good spirits and stoicism. Today, I was especially grateful to all who coped with the change of plan for assembly and pickup, caused by the sudden heavy storm that fell a few minutes before 2.00pm. Working with such super, cooperative children, parents and staff is a genuine pleasure.

This is just a short blog for a short week. However, I must say 'Well done' to every student who attended school on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week. Attendance is important (unless you are sick) on every day of term, right from the start, until the very end.

Wet Weather

We all hope for better weather next week. If the rain continues, please remember:

  • Children do not need umbrellas for break times. This is because the children will only be allowed outside at break if it is not raining. If it is raining, they will stay indoors for their break. When children are running and playing outside, umbrellas can be dangerous, because the struts are a hazard to eyes and faces.

National Day Poster Competition

Last term, the Arabic department ran a competiton for classes to design the best poster for Bahrain's 51st National Day celebrations. Class 6.04 were the worthy winners, with these two super designs. Well done, class 6.04! The annual National Day celebrations are very important to us at BSB, as Bahrain is our host country and we are extremely proud to be here.
