"We're all going on a summer holiday, no more worries for a week or two..."

Bruce Welch

Dear Parents,

As the school year comes to an end I thank all children, teachers, support staff and parents for their enthusiasm, hard work and contribution to the BSB community. It has been a pleasure to watch these wonderful children learn and grow. The poise and maturity of the children in Year 2 at their graduation assembly was clear evidence that the Infants' has done its job. They spoke clearly and confidently, sang beautifully and behaved with a decorum fitting of the occasion. Different cohorts of children have a distinct personalities, some year groups are particularly easy going, others full of original ideas, others a complicated blend of excitable personalities. This particular Year 2 group will be remembered for their wonderful generosity of spirit. They truly look out for one another and rejoice in each others' successes. We are proud to send them up to the Juniors where we know they are in excellent hands.

It leaves for me only to wish you a relaxing and enjoyable summer holiday and we look forward to welcoming children back on Monday, 2nd September.

Good Morning Performing!

It seemed fitting that the Infant Little Stars Choir performed the finale of this academic year’s series of ‘Good Morning’ performances. The children exuded a sense of joy and satisfaction as they performed a medley of songs including ‘The Flintstones’, ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ and ‘Land of the Silver Birch’.

Singing in a choir is a wonderful way for children to feel part of something bigger than themselves. You could see the pride on their faces that each little voice had contributed to make such a beautiful harmony. Many thanks to Miss Lydia for training them so skillfully and inspiring them to believe in themselves. I know Mrs Harling is looking forward to welcoming many of them into the Year 3 choir next year.

Year 2’s “Best Day Ever”

The end of your party for children in Year 2 is one of the highlights of the year for the children. We have tried different formats over the years, sometimes hosting the party in the evening. After much discussion, the Year 2 team decided to organize its slightly differently this year, with an emphasis on keeping the party unsophisticated and age appropriate. There was also an emphasis on celebrating our oldest students’ independence by organizing an event which allowed the children to have more opportunities to choose how they spent their time. At the end of their induction morning in Year 3, the children returned to find a Year 2 corridor with a difference. In some rooms there were traditional games such as marbles or musical chairs, in others bowling, mindfulness colouring, henna and origami. Children were free to plan and organize their own time, mixing with whoever in the year group they chose to. The corridor oozed a wonderful sense of well being, particularly as the children were already on a high after their Year 3 experience.

Transition Mornings

Children in the younger years also enjoyed visiting the learning environments of the year groups where they will be in September. All are in agreement that are ready to ‘move up’.

After School Clubs

A gentle reminder that after school clubs are now finished for the year. There are no after school clubs next week.

Last Day of School

School will finish at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday 3rd July.

Wishing you a happy and relaxing weekend.

Dear Parents,

The week seems to be rushing by as we move closer to the end of the school year. There is an air of excitement in the Year 2 corridor as the children prepare for their graduation assembly on the 1st of July. Many thanks to the Arabic department for decorating the corridor so beautifully. I hope you enjoy the preview as the children were practising in assembly this morning. There were definitely a few tears in the eyes of the teachers as the children were singing so poignantly.

Winners all round!

Congratulations to the winners of the Ramadan quiz. We were delighted with the response and are very grateful to out sponsors Victoria Dance, Build a Bear, Yellow Submarine, Dr Tariq Hospital, Budget, HSBC, Playsy and the Gulf Hotel. Dear Parents,

The week has ended happily for staff, as they head home with the sense of wellbeing that comes with being cared about and well fed and watered. Many, many thanks to Ms Yvette Prins, members of the PCC and parents who contributed to a magnificent feast for all staff members at lunchtime.

Everyone was extremely touched by your thoughtfulness and generosity. Thank you.

Nursery Concert

It has been lovely to see the confidence of children in Nursery grow as the year has progressed. They positively glowed with self belief during the Nursery concerts- dancing and singing their hearts out! Different classes chose different stories as the basis of their productions, but Cave Baby, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Giraffes Can’t Dance all provided the perfect, age appropriate inspiration. The attention to detail in the costumes and the humorous and original props set the tone even before the children started to perform. Encouraged by some of the most enthusiastic audiences ever, the children threw any inhibitions to the wind and gave their all on stage.

Many thanks to Ms. Jess and Team Nursery for creating the scripts, preparing the children and giving us all such a treat!

Entertainment through the Decades

Children in Year 1 are thoroughly enjoying researching their new topic ‘Entertainment through the Decades’. This week began with collections of artifacts being passed around the classes, investigated and discussed. In one collection there was a guitar, sheet music a CD, in another, a skull and a collection of plays; in yet another, an apple and an ipad.

The collections were then taken to assembly ready to be matched to their rightful VIP owners. Children interviewed five very special guests and eventually Steve Jobs claimed his iPad, Dolly Parton her guitar, Philip Astley, his circus props, Audrey Hepburn her popcorn and William Shakespeare his collection of plays. The development of language and sense of enquiry that this provocation inspired was all we had hoped for. Perhaps you recognized some of the VIP guests!

As the end of the school year looms, I am sure many of you are eager to know who your child’s class teacher will be for the 2019-2020 academic year. Our transition process is already underway and we look forward to informing you of their new teacher before the end of the year.

"Stick to the basics, hold on to your family and friends - they will never go out of fashion."

Niki Taylor

Bravo Ellie!

The Reception production had a beautifully simple storyline. Ellie the Elephant wanted to leave the circus to explore the world. On her way to the airport in a taxi, Ellie had a dream about her friends and family in the circus. She then came to the conclusion that home is where the heart is and decided to ask the driver to return her to her loved ones in the circus.

During Ellie’s dream the audience were treated to performances by acrobats, lion tamers, magicians, clowns and a marching band. Children in Reception did their teachers proud! Their enthusiasm as they sang, danced, twirled and recited was infectious and it wasn’t long before hands were clapping and heels tapping in the audience.

Of course such productions only happen with tremendous effort from all involved. Many many thanks to Mrs Robson, Ms Fearon, Mr Mark and all the teachers and assistants involved in the creation of ‘Ellie the Elephant’. Thank you too to all the children, for spreading their enthusiasm and good cheer.

Thank you Year 2

The Holy Month of Ramadan seems to be passing very quickly this year. There has been the usual warm atmosphere in the school marking this special time of year. However, only this week, there is a definite sense that many of our community - parents, teachers and children alike, are starting to tire. So many people are absolutely stretched to capacity, which is why what happened this morning was so touching!

I was invited to visit the library by children in Year 2 for a surprise! Almost overnight the space had been transformed into an exhibition of the children’s learning about the ocean as part of their journeys topic. Great thought, creativity and care had on into the exhibition- as well as many man hours. Thank you Year 2 for going above and beyond to create a little bit of magic.

“At the BSB, we look after one another…”

Student in RG, Dec, 2003

Dear Parents,

Year 2 had an impromptu movie streaming in assembly this morning. The theme was kindness and looking after one another. The video says it all really- children stumble and their friends rally to help them straight back up again. Their home made movie led to deeper conversation that if someone is feeling down, it is still a good idea for their friends to look after them and be there for them. I couldn’t help but remember my very first Reception class. New to the school, I was trying to elicit from the children what was special about BSB. The first, very astute response from four year old Kristine was “At BSB, we look after one another.” Thank You Mr Collins and 2.9 for making the movie and for reminding us of the important things in our school community.

Heads down

It has been a fairly quiet week in the school and children have been focussing hand on our core business of teaching reading, writing, maths, Arabic and critical thinking.

Some classes had a brief reprieve with a visit to the Seniors Art Exhibition and we are very grateful to have had the opportunity. Unlike many adult guests, who tended to ask for interpretation of the pieces from the artists, the children were quick to comment, “My favourite is the earthquake, “This one is about gergaoon” or “That sculpture reminds me of a beehive.”

There was a great sense of awe and wonder at the ideas, the talent, the materials used and the time it must have taken to create the exhibition. I can only echo that feeling!

Ramadan Appeal

Thank you to those who contributed to the Ramadan Appeal for the Migrant Workers Protection Society and to the generous parent volunteers. I am delighted to report that we have a huge number of shoebox gifts of items for donation. If you would still like to contribute next week, items can be delivered to the Infants head teacher office and I will take them to the collection point in seniors.

We are continuing to enjoy the Ramadan Spirit at school and wish you a relaxing weekend.

“You have two hands, one for helping yourself, the other for helping others.”

Audrey Hepburn

Dear Parents,

Many thanks to all the parent volunteers, children and teachers who have worked tirelessly to get the Ramadan Charity Appeal off to such a great start. We already have a good number beautifully wrapped shoe boxes full of essential items ready for distribution and the mountain of dried foods we have requested is growing daily.

We will continue to receive donations for migrant workers until Thursday 23rd May. Items can be dropped off between 7:30 am and 8:00 am in the nursery corridor.

There is a reminder of the required items below, but even one item for a shoebox, or indeed an empty shoebox is also very gratefully received. The team are compiling shoeboxes as donations come in.

SHOE BOX ITEMS:

*THESE ITEMS SHOULD BE SEALED AND UNUSED*

  • Toothpaste -1

  • Toothbrush -1

  • Shaving cream -1

  • Razor -1

  • Bar of soap-1

  • Washing soap powder (260g OMO double concentrate)

  • Socks (ONE SIZE FITS ALL)-1 pair

  • Small face towel-1

  • Comb-1

  • Nail cutter-1

  • Small hand towel-1

  • Shower gel - 250ml

FOOD ITEMS:

*PLEASE CHECK EXPIRY DATES*

  • Rice 10 kg

  • Tang

  • Rose syrup

  • Chana Dal 1 kg

  • Masoor Dal 1 kg

  • Sunflower oil 1.8 litre

  • Sugar 1 kg

  • Tea (100 pack Lipton)

  • Salt 1 kg

One small plea, there is a need for a few more shoe boxes for ladies, perhaps substituting the shaving cream for a body lotion or deodorant and the comb for a hairbrush or conditioner. Thank you for your support. The atmosphere in the nursery corridor is quite magical in the mornings as the children take such pride in their careful wrapping.

Surprise Visitors

Teachers in Year 2 were unable to come into school this morning. There was a hushed silence in the Year 2 corridor as Mr Brant and I explained the situation to the children, asking for their cooperation and a promise to be on their very best behaviour, particularly as the teachers absence coincided with a formal visit to the school by some VIP guests.

Then the fun started. I was reminded of the power of the element of surprise when trying to engage children. The Year 2 assistants took their classes on a guided tour, to meet the VIP guests. All VIP guests were waxworks of famous maritime explorers. On closer inspection, Ms Zara was Jacques Cousleau who co-developed the aqua-lung, Ms. Adrian was Mary Read, one of the first female pirates. Ms Nanda was Roald Amundsen, Mr Collins was Robert Ballard, a marine archaeologist who found the Titanic and Mrs Dashti was Christopher Columbus. I thank all the teachers concerned for making the learning such fun for the children.

'No entertainment is as cheap as reading, nor any pleasure so long lasting.'

Mary Wortley Montagu

Dear Parents,

A few members of staff, myself included, have been feeling rather old this week! The new, open ended topic in Year 1, ' Entertainment through the Decades', has evoked childhood memories for many of us. It seems funny that our lifetimes are ancient history for our six year olds.

Groups of children in each Year 1 class were given a particular decade to explore, ranging from the 1920's to the 1990's. On Monday they were invited to either dress up or make something representative of their particular decade and come to school prepared for a show and tell session.

The variety of responses was phenomenal. Some chose to be actresses, performers or singers from their decade - Charlie Chaplin, Jackie Kennedy and Elvis Presley all made an appearance. Others chose home entertainment such as radios, videos, televisions and the invention of the internet. There were traditional games like Monopoly and Scrabble or fast growing fads, like the Rubik's cube. And then there were some absolutely magnificent flashes of originality - the invention of the roller coaster in the 1930's and of AstroTurf in the 1960's. I congratulate all families and teachers involved. One thing is for sure, as Walt Disney himself said, this topic will be 'Making People Happy'.

Shoe Box Appeal

We encourage children to think of others who are less fortunate than themselves. The Holy Month of Ramadan is the perfect time of year to foster a spirit of generosity and thoughtfulness in the school. In assembly today we talked about some members of the school community who work hard, long hours and upon whom we all depend. We talked about how hard it must be to leave wives and children in another home country but to work at the BSB in order to send them money home for family necessities.

We are keen to surprise the bus nannies, security guards and team of cleaners just before Eid. We have joined forces with the other sections of the school to participate in the Shoe Box Appeal. If your child would like to participate, they should shop with you for the items on the following list. The items should then be put into an empty shoe box and brought to the collection point at the end of the nursery corridor. Volunteer parents (thank you to those who have already signed up!), teachers and students from the Seniors will help the children to check the box and wrap it attractively at the wrapping station. The school will then ensure the packages reach either members of our community, or the Migrant Workers Charity before Eid.

The list of items to be included is as follows. You could of course alter the items slightly if intended for a female recipient.

SHOE BOX ITEMS:

*THESE ITEMS SHOULD BE SEALED AND UNUSED*

  • Toothpaste -1

  • Toothbrush -1

  • Shaving cream -1

  • Razor -1

  • Bar of soap-1

  • Washing soap powder (260g OMO double concentrate)

  • Socks (ONE SIZE FITS ALL)-1 pair

  • Small face towel-1

  • Comb-1

  • Nail cutter-1

  • Small hand towel-1

  • Shower gel - 250ml

FOOD ITEMS:

*PLEASE CHECK EXPIRY DATES*

  • Rice 10 kg

  • Tang

  • Rose syrup

  • Chana Dal 1 kg

  • Masoor Dal 1 kg

  • Sunflower oil 1.8 litre

  • Sugar 1 kg

  • Tea (100 pack Lipton)

  • Salt 1 kg

I am sure this will be an enjoyable and worthwhile experience for the children. Donations can be dropped off in the Nursery corridor between 7.30am and 8.00am any school morning from Sunday 12th May.

Starting the Summer Term with a Surprise

On the first morning of any new term there is nearly always a quiet start to the day as children settle themselves back into routine. However, children in Reception were in for a surprise on their first morning back. Our aim was to sow the seeds of excitement and anticipation for the Reception production at the end of this month. This year’s production is circus themed, so for assembly the hall was transformed into a big top. Children met a ringmaster, a juggler, acrobats, boneless lady contortionists, a hoop dancer and a parkour expert extraordinaire. The element of surprise absolutely hit the spot with the children and I thank Mr. Brant, Miss Maher and the Senior students involved for being such good sports. The children were already inspired to practise their acrobatics on the new grass area at break time afterwards. I hope you enjoy the video!

Ocean Discovery

We were honoured when a group of forty students were invited to a lecture on ocean discovery by Jean Michele Cousteau at the Ritz Carlton, Bahrain just before the holiday. This was part of the hotel’s Ambassador of Environment worldwide program. It was easy to decide who should attend from the Junior School, the Eco-Rangers had certainly earned the privilege. In Infants, Year 1 had been on a beach clean-up as part of their beachcombers topic, so there was very real interest in the subject. The children themselves voted to select two children from their class to attend. The criteria for selection being the children who had contributed most enthusiasm for the beachcombers environmental topic.

The children has a wonderful morning. After meeting Mr Michele Cousteau and enjoying his presentation, they participated in a collaborative art project and enjoyed a light buffet. Thank you Ritz Carlton Bahrain!

Shhh…..Time To Dream

I smiled to myself on Tuesday morning. Children in Year 1 were thoroughly enjoying being gently ribbed by adults- “Oh, did you forget your uniform today?” Needless to say, at the start of the day, when asked why they were wearing pyjamas, the stock response was “Because its Pyjama Day.” Hats off to the teachers……by the end of the day the children were excited to recount what they had learnt about the importance of sleep. ‘To stay healthy.’ ‘To grow,’ ‘So your brain works well, ‘So you don’t get grumpy’ ‘To let your body recharge’ and ‘So your organs work properly’ were the buzzwords around. Children also tested various surfaces and conditions as comfortable venues for sleep. We hope our work has paid off at home and that the children are jumping into bed as soon as they are told to.

Visitors from the Children’s Academy

We were pleased to welcome some guests from the Children’s Academy this morning. As part of their Book Week they were visiting the Infants Library where they enjoyed storytime, looked at fiction and nonfiction books and joined with Mr. Mark’s tunes on the guitar and drums. Thank you Miss Eman for making our guests so welcome.

Ramadan Kareem

I would like to remind you about changes to the school timings during Ramdan. The school day will start at the usual time with classroom doors opening at 7:45am. During Ramadan, the school day will finish at the following times:

  • Nursery- 11:45 am

  • Reception- 1:00pm

  • Year 1- 1:25 pm

  • Year 2- 1:25 pm

Visit from Nova Dental Clinic

Children in Nursery brushed up on their dental care knowledge with a visit from a vivacious team from Nova Dental Clinic. They enjoyed choosing food items that were healthy for teeth and practised brushing Mr.Nova the dragon’s teeth.

Thank you Nova Clinic for the free check ups!

Wishing you a restful and enjoyable weekend,

Best wishes,
