"The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary."

Vince Lombardi

Children, teachers and parents entered into the spirit of Reception Sports' Day with energy and enthusiasm this morning. Team games and obstacle courses were fresh and exciting for the children and I thank Ms Hana for her thoughtful planning of the event. Thank you too to parents and the team of GCSE PE students for their support, applause and encouragement. Huge credit to all parents and teachers who, much to the delight of the children, participated in the adult races.

It was Team Nursery's turn to get out and about this week. The aquarium at the Mall of Dilmunia brought the children's learning about the sea to life. They saw sharks, stingrays and real deep sea divers, who were happy to point out sharks' eggs and demonstrate their diving equipment. The trip provoked some lovely rich discussion, but only after a much needed nap as the bus returned to school. I could not resist adding the clip of George, who only joined Reception this term and is proving to be a hit in performing arts lessons.

" With every drop of water you drink, every breath you take, you are connected to the sea. No matter where on earth you live."

Sylvia Earle

It is interesting to see how various units of learning evolve and develop over the years. 'Ocean Explorers' has always been a popular topic in Year 2 but the lines of enquiry pursued by our current cohort of children are concerned with marine biology, ocean pollution and the threats posed to the environment rather than explorers from the past. Even this year's Explorer's Day felt fresh and exciting. Costumes were a magnificent creative mix of recycled clothes and shop bought pieces teamed with homemade accessories. This is certainly a generation of children who are happy to take risks, secure in the knowledge that originality is good. The highlight of the day was in informative presentation and demonstration by Mr Maguire on the wonders of scuba diving. He was delighted with the relevant questions children asked and we thank him for taking time out of his busy schedule.

It was good to see so many parents at the Infant School coffee morning organised by the PCA. The popularity of these events is undoubtedly increasing and a sense of community is growing by the day.

Congratulations to the next group of students who completed their activity passports. Children have until the end of the month to earn their certificates, if they wish to do so.

"Don't just walk into 2023. Dive into it instead."

Anthony T.Hincks

Team Infants has dived into 2023 with the usual verve and enthusiasm. The break has done us all good and I don't think I have ever had a week with so many children coming to my office to show me how good their writing is! Progress in books since the start of the school year is phenomenal. The trick is of course to engage children so they actually want to write in the first place. As you can see in the photographs, the stimulus of a real life spaceship crashing through the roof of the Reception corridor was enough to encourage even those who are a little reluctant to write to become budding reporters. I applaud the teachers for taking time to create this magic for them.

In assemblies we have been talking about New Year resolutions and a spirit of commitment, remaining dedicated even if a challenge is difficult to start with . One thing is for sure, children are certainly committed to improving their fitness on the super new trim trail in the Key Stage 1 playground. Many thanks to the wonderful Parent Community Ambassadors for their huge efforts in fundraising over the years to provide this equipment.

The new EYFS playground is also taking shape and the children's smiles say it all.

Building Character at the BSB

Character and resilience are every bit as important as academic qualifications. We do all we can to develop character at school, partly by giving children opportunities that involve sport, creativity, performing and volunteering. There are organisations outside of schools that pride themselves in building character - the Scouting and Guiding movements and the Duke of Edinburgh International Award Scheme being excellent examples of these. We have been considering ways to develop character outside school too and I congratulate the first group of children who completed their Activity Passports. There is still plenty of time to earn your passport and the challenge is optional, and I hope the children will enjoy participating in the activities. The activities and forms below can be sent to your child's class teacher any time before the end of January and certificates will be presented in assembly.

"Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things."

Robert Breault

I suspect this week may have broken all BSB Infants records for having the largest number of events over a five day period! Learning continues as usual as children in Year 1 visited Jasra House as part of their Kings and Queens topic. They returned full of information about the 112 year old dwelling being the birthplace of Sheik Isa, about the way dates were pressed and how a long time ago, before there was air conditioning people climbed on raised platforms where the air circulated to keep themselves cool. Meanwhile, Year 2 was full of news about the efficiency of hydroponic farming in a desert country, after their visit to Peninsula Farm. They enjoyed comparing this method to more traditional methods and concluded that traditional methods were definitely harder work.

Many thanks to team Year1 for preparing the magnificent medieval banquet for their royal guests. The children certainly made the most of the outstanding service provided by their adult servants and courtiers.

It was lovely to welcome so many families from Nursery and Reception to the Winter Showcases. The children sang and danced magnificently and thoroughly enjoyed completing art activities with their families. The intimacy of the classroom venues added to the warmth of the occasion and the confidence of the children. We very much look forward to welcoming you to KS1 singalongs next week.

"Celebrations infuse life with passion and purpose. They summon the human spirit."

Terrence E. Deal

There was a party atmosphere in the school today as children in Reception concluded their learning on celebrations around the world with Celebrations Day. Thank you to parents who provided some exquisite examples of national dress. The varied samples of traditional foods from around the globe provoked some excellent discussion. All were in agreement that there were common themes in different celebrations - organisation, invitations, food, dancing, music and games. One thing for certain, as R4 put it, "Celebrations make us happy!" Many thanks to Mrs Biard, Ms Lowri, Ms Hana, Ms Claire, Ms Clarke and Ms Hall for taking to the stage and leading children in traditional dances from around the world.

We are looking forward to the Hour of Code next week and thank Ms Rasha Ashkar for preparing the children in assembly this morning. It will be nice to see the blue bots and bee bots getting some exercise next week.

Thank you to parents of children in KS1 who have already completed the health check form for the Ministry of Education. We look forward to receiving more next week.

We hope to see many of you at the Festive Night Market tomorrow. Wishing you a happy Bahraini Women's Day.

"You are never really playing an opponent. You are playing yourself, your own highest standards, and when you reach your limits, that is real joy."

Arthur Ashe

Cross phase events are often the highlights of the week and are one of the great bonuses of having a 3-18 school all on one campus. Today, children in Year 2 were treated to an additional sports day, organised by the BTEC students in the Senior School. It was wonderful to see the older students modelling community spirit, quiet confidence , a sense of fun and contagious enthusiasm. Many many thanks team BTEC and the all whole school PE department for giving us such a worthwhile experience in the fresh air.

The Infant School was also well represented in the whole school inter house Arts Competition. 'This Little Light of Mine', 'This is Me', 'It's a Beautiful Day' and 'Celebrate Life Today' were performed with gusto and verve - and plenty of audience participation.

Health and safety have been on our minds particularly this week as we were inspected by the Ministry of Education. Parents in Year 1 and Year 2 will have received a hard copy of a medical form in book bags this evening. After an age appropriate check up at either your local health centre or a private clinic, please return the form to your child's form teacher by Sunday 11th December.

With trips to Artly Gallery and Ready, Get Set, Cook this week, safety on the roads has been a teaching point in Nursery and Reception. Thank you for supporting us in reminding your child to always wear a seat belt while in the car!

"Nature, time and patience are the three great physicians."

Chinese Proverb

Now that the weather is cooling down a little, children in Year 2 have been enjoying spending time in nature. Many thanks to Ms. Andrea at Roots and Shoots organic farm for the warm welcome and informative tour. Children learned about plants at different stages of development, the materials required for a successful compost heap, and irrigation systems. Limes, pumkins and aubergines looked all the more appetising while still attached to the plant and the horse, cows, goats and chickens were fun to observe.

The first of the Reception trips to Artly Gallery in A'ali also took place this week, and R3 had the opportunity to experiment with brushes of various thicknesses and textures on canvas. They relished the opportunity to express themselves in a new medium and managed to wait patiently for their efforts to dry before adding the final touches. The other Reception classes are looking forward to their trips next week.

The corridors in Nursery and Reception have been buzzing as children enjoyed playing with words for Nursery Rhyme week. Thank you Team Nursery for making the Nursery Rhyme Messy Day such fun. It was good to see the children's confidence growing as they spent time in unfamiliar classrooms.

Staff members also went back to school for training on barriers to learning, either verbal or sensory, that some children experience and ways that adults can support. Many thanks to 'Steps' for the practical, very useful workshop.

It was also a pleasure to welcome Mrs Alex Welford, the founder of the British School of Bahrain to campus and show her the wonderful legacy she has left to us.

"How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes!"

Maya Angelou

It is fitting that having learned about the qualities and characteristics of super heroes such as bravery, strength, kindness and resilience, children considered real life acts of heroism in assembly this morning. There was thoughtful discussion on how many professionals such as police, paramedics, firefighters and the miltary often have to act heroically, putting themselves in danger to keep other people safe. We were delighted to welcome guests from the Royal Hospital, Chelsea and applaud them for their participation!

Many thanks to Ms Meadhbh Linden, Infant School Maths Coordinator for organising such a practical and memorable Maths Day today. Capacity, time, shape, space and measure were all explored in competitive relay races and creative challenges. All agreed that the day was 'super fun'. Well done to the children too for their original ideas for the maths hat challenge.

A special well done to the four students in Year 2 who attended the through school trip to the Papal mass. Their patience, behaviour and reliability as the represented the school with the older children was exceptional.

"Time is relative, it's only worth depends upon what we do as it is passing."

Albert Einstien

There is a sense that time is moving quickly with much going on at this time of year. Despite rigorous academics each morning, children in Key Stage 1 are making the absolute most of all the after school clubs on offer. It is good to see new friendships being forged as children have now spent a considerable amount of time with club mates. We have also heard the first strains of children rehearsing for winter sing-alongs next month.

I thank all staff members for continuing to go above and beyond in making learning fun, meaningful and engaging for the children. Even the task of learning to write a set of clear instructions in Year 2 came to life as they chose to follow through with the recipes to see if they worked.

We look forward to upcoming trips to Artly, Roots and Shoots and Ready Steady Cook. There is also a visit from the Gentlemen in Red from the Royal Hospital, Chelsea and Maths Day to look forward to next week.

'Anything is possible with sunshine and a little pink.'

Lilly Pulitzer

There has been a lovely sense of community in the final week of the first half term of the year. It was a pleasure to welcome parents in Reception to the Phonics Information Evening on Monday. I hope you found it helpful as the children embark upon their journey of learning to read.

Many thanks to the phenomenally well prepared parents who presented at the Year 2 Job Fair. We were delighted to welcome doctors, architects, bankers, artists, psychologists and nutritionists and I hope the children's questions were suitably thought provoking! Looking at their outfits, it was clear that many of the children have great plans for the future - budding website designers, influencers, surgeons, vets and a female judge. At the job fair children also enjoyed experiencing the workload of traditional craftsmen of Bahrain in the past - weaving, pottery and architectural design.

Seeing parents dressed in pink to match their children at morning drop off really made us smile. Thank you to all who contribute to the EYFS Pink tea party. There was a very creative twist to the pink treats! Children in KS1 honed their teamwork skills as they created a pink chain of love of record breaking length.

Congratulations to Milana Salame in 1.4, the winner of the Name the Unicorn competition. We agree that 'Pink Princess' was an excellent suggestion!

"The greatest happiness comes from being vitally interested in something that excites all your energies."

Walter Annebery

A little boy in Year 1 really made me smile this week. I happened to be covering in his classroom and I noticed that he wasn't really engaged in the task set. When I asked him if everything was OK, he said "Yes" as he continued to gaze at the computer on the teacher's desk. He then added "I was just wondering what was inside those wires coming out of the computer and plugging into the walls?"

How lovely to hear his unprompted question and to sense his in-depth interest and spirit of the curiosity! Although my answer was possibly not completely scientifically accurate, our conversation was a great reminder of the importance of being responsive to a child's interests as they learn.

New experiences often pique new interests. This term has seen the greatest uptake of Infants after-school clubs ever. It is lovely to hear feedback that children are painting/drawing/building/dancing more at home, since they joined a particular after-school club.

Thank you to parents who attended parent-teacher meetings this week. I hope they gave you valuable insight into your child's learning. We are aware that there has been a slightly higher rate of absence this week due to seasonal bugs. Please do not worry if your child missed their school photographs; we will make sure they attend a catch-up session early next week.

Thank you to parents in Year 2 who have volunteered to participate in next week's job fair. The children have their questions ready.

"You don't learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over."

Richard Branson

In the Infant School we are great believers in learning through doing. There was a magnificent example of this in action in Nursery and Reception this morning. Children are learning about people and communities - the school community, the community in Bahrain and the wider global community. Today we saw every single member of the EYFS community working together to create some phenomenal collaborative 3D models. They were supported by engineers Ali, Zainab and Lerica from Byrne Looby who gave tips on how to design and construct. Our guests were particularly pleased to meet so many budding female engineers! If you are passing through the Infant building, please do not hesitate to stop and admire the sculptures in the Reception corridor.

Meanwhile children in Year 2 learned about community life in Bahrain in the past during their expedition to Bahrain National Museum. Well done to the children for their exemplary behaviour when representing the school off campus.

Many thanks to the Beyond BSB Medicine and Health Sciences student forum who organised an after school Teddy Bear First Aid session for children in Year 1. Levels of engagement were high as children learned to take blood pressure, remove thorns with tweezers and apply plasters and bandages if necessary.

We look forward to welcoming parents to the parent teacher meetings, and to the annual school photography next week. In the meantime, I hope you have an enjoyable long weekend.

"I don't want to be at the mercy of my emotions. I want to use them, to enjoy them, and to dominate them."

Oscar Wilde

September in infant schools is often a month of heightened emotions, particularly for children transitioning into a new environment. New faces, new teachers and a new classroom can be a lot to cope with! It takes time for very young children to be able to identify their emotions, to name them and then, where necessary, to regulate them. After enjoying a wealth of stories illustrating how different colours can represent different emotions, today Team Nursery celebrated the first ever BSB Mixed up Emotions Day- hence the rainbow coloured children this morning! It was exciting to hear new vocabulary such as 'frustrated', 'worried' and 'proud' being bandied around as children learned different techniques to return to the Green Zone, happy, focused and ready to learn. Stomping feet on the floor, drawing volcanoes and loud music proved helpful in managing angry feelings and all were happy to cool down with counting, soothing music, deep breathing and yoga.

Mr Maguire and the Infant School Leadership Team have enjoyed a week in classrooms observing lessons, with a focus on teaching and learning. It was reassuring to glimpse some excellent attainment, examples of child led initiatives and experiential learning. We look forward to welcoming parents to online parent teacher meetings during the week beginning Monday 10th October and sharing insights into your child's progress.

"There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."

Henry James

Children in Year 1 have continued to explore their super powers this week, considering which of their own five senses is the most powerful. Navigating obstacle courses blindfolded, even when given clear instructions, is nowhere near as easy as it looks! They concluded their learning on the sense of hearing with a powerful assembly on Makaton signing, led by Ms Fearon and Mr Hadwin. Many a smile was raised when teachers noticed children signing to each other, rather than talking, at playtime.

The sense of taste was left to Year 2, as they dressed in red, white and blue for a traditional British afternoon tea party. Dainty sandwiches and scones with jam and cream went down a treat in a relaxed, civilised manner as the conversation flowed.

"Thank you, Your Majesty, for everything."

Paddington Bear

This week the world is marking the momentous event that is the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Many, many tributes have been paid to Her Majesty, a magnificent 'leader to' and 'servant of' the people. The school community has very much pulled together to support one another at this time, putting the children's needs first as we get into the swing of Term 1. It was apt that today was Superhero Day for children in Year 1. We were in agreement that Her Majesty had many of the qualities in common with superheroes - bravery, strength, perseverance and resilience.

I thank Team Nursery for organising a successful Teddy Bears' Picnic. I believe the furry friends enjoyed their outing to school.

School will continue as usual next week for children in Infants. The only change is the cancellation of After School Clubs on Monday 19th September as a mark of respect for the state funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11. If you would like to collect your child early on Monday, please email your child's class teacher on Sunday.

"Good manners is just being respectful of others. Whether you know them or not, you should show respect for all people."

John Patrick Hickey

The week ended on a high for children in Key Stage 1 as we returned to in-person assemblies after a three year hiatus. It was lovely to hear the children singing in unison again. The theme of the assembly was respect and kindness - it was agreed that if we all keep those values at the back of our minds, school will continue to be a very happy place.

Teachers have noted that after only a week at school, children are showing improved manners and respect for each other and their teachers. More smiles, more friendly good mornings and more pleases and thank yous. Well done!

Many thanks to parents who attended the Welcome Talks for Years 1 and 2 this week. I hope they gave you valuable insight into your child's learning and daily routines. If you were unable to attend this online event, please see the presentations below.

You will be notified over the course of the weekend if your child has a confirmed space in an extra-curricular activity. We look forward to clubs starting on Sunday.

"A new beginning is a blank canvas ready and thirsty for paint."

Chaker Khazaal

A very warm welcome to all new and returning BSB families. As always at the start of the year it is fun to see the flashes of recognition as children, parents and teachers are reunited and exciting to see the seeds of new friendships being sown.

Well done to all children in Key Stage 1 who completed their first full day today with gusto and enthusiasm. I was also delighted to hear that the induction days for Nursery and Reception have been successful and we are very much looking forward to transition week next week.

Parents of children in Year 1 and Year 2 will receive an email this evening, outlining the after-school clubs available for children this term, along with your School Cloud login details. Please also find the list of Infants after-school clubs HERE. This will give you the chance to discuss the options available with your child, ready for sign-up online at 10am on Sunday morning. After-school clubs begin on Sunday 11th September.
