School's out for summer

It has been an enormous push to get everything done, all our classwork and assignments completed, our learning objectives achieved, by the end of term. We have made it and we all - students, teachers, learning support assistants, everyone - need a break to recharge our batteries. As always, most of our teachers are staying with us after the holiday, and a few are moving on.

Today we said farewell to Ms Halpin and Ms Mohi, who have both helped me enormously in running the junior school for several years, as well as teaching a number of classes. Mr Brennan, who gets a mention in Ms Gray's PE report below, also leaves us this time around. Ms Hooper, who has taught Art to Years 5 and 6 for two years, is leaving us too. Mrs Collinson, teacher of Year 5 and 6 English, is returning to the UK to join a school there. Mrs Moodley, a Year 4 teacher, and Ms Mann, Head of Year 4, are heading off to pastures new, as is Mr Prendergast, who has taught Science and Humanities to Years 5 and 6. Mrs Harling, who has kept our musical learning going through blended and remote school, and Ms Zainab, a learning support assistant who has ably helped us in Year 3, are also moving on. We thank our departing colleagues for all they have done for the students and the school as a whole, particularly through these troublesome times. New teachers are coming in to take up the reins, and over sixty juniors' teachers and learning support assistants are staying with us, to continue great educational provision after the summer break.

Riya's Debating Gold Medal

Riya in class 6.08 participated in the Owlypia Global virtual round during the weekend 24-26 June. Riya was placed in a team with two students from another school to participate in the OWLINS category (9-11 Year olds). Her team did exceptionally well and together they achieved a gold medal in speech craft and team spirit challenge. The debate motion was "Films are better at explaining than books", with Riya's team speaking against the motion. Click here to hear Riya's speech.

PE - Summer Holiday Update from Ms Gray

As the school year draws to a close and the long summer holiday begins, it’s a time to look back and celebrate all that we have accomplished, but it’s also a time to look forward to what’s ahead of us. Whilst we have now switched off our alarms, I do hope you plan some activities into your day that get your children out of their gaming chairs and off their sofas! Your children have worked so hard to build up their fitness levels over the course of the year, especially with gymnastics (Years 3 & 4) and the marathon and landmark challenges (Years 5 & 6) they have recently been completing in PE lessons - so please remember to keep that going over the holidays and release those ‘feel good’ endorphins! Staying fit and healthy also boosts your immune system, which as we know is even more important at the moment for fighting off infections.

There are many opportunities available over the holidays. If you are staying here in Bahrain, we have the BSB Elements sports camps, as well as the opportunities provided by RLS Bahrain in the ‘#Itonlytakes20seconds’ campaign. Also, for those of you who watched or heard about the Danish football player going into cardiac arrest at the Euro football competition (he is recovering well thanks to the prompt CPR he received on the pitch), UK Coaching have created a digital toolkit, which includes a free interactive eLearning course Learn How to Save a Life, which is an invaluable resource.

As we say goodbye to the school year, it is also time to say goodbye to a much loved and respected member of the junior PE department. We have been lucky enough to have Mr Brennan as one of our PE teachers in the junior school over the last few years: who can forget his ‘can you beat Mr Brennan’ videos, and his professional instructional videos which helped many of you with the challenges we set you all at home? We wish him all the very best in his next exciting adventure, travelling and exploring the world. For those of you in need of inspiration for exercise this holiday, have a look at Mr Brennan’s Youtube channel and see if you can keep up or beat him? Why not challenge your family members to some of the workouts?

Wishing you all a happy and healthy summer holiday - stay fit, stay healthy, stay safe!

A glimpse into the future

This morning, instead of timetabled lessons for the first hour of the day, we all spent time with teachers (and, in the case of Year 6 moving into Year 7, with Seniors students) from the next phase of our BSB learning journey. Sometimes, we might feel slightly nervous about moving up to a new year group in September. Our transition morning takes all the nerves away by offering everyone a foretaste of life in their next year group. One thing is for certain - time flies, and we all need to make the most of our school time, whether it's online, blended or normal in-school learning, with good attendance, right up to the last day of term. This term ends at 12 noon on Thursday, 1 July.

Year 6 BSME App Competition

Message from Mrs Hall

Massive congratulations to all the creative App designers from Year 6 who have been participating in the BSME App Challenge since November 2020.

Working in teams, the children had to design an App that would solve a real world problem that they wished to solve. Teams were judged on their App design, problem solving, team work, creativity and presentation skills.

After many months of work, BSB Year 6 students submitted two team designs.

The ‘Space Us’ App was designed with multiple applications. It can be used:

  • To remind and reinforce the users on social distancing measures during COVID and notify the users when safe distancing is breached or at the risk of being breached;

  • By parents or caregivers of children to ensure that the children are within safe distance from them in playgrounds, supermarkets etc.

  • To identify the presence of people to reach out to during an emergency and for rescue operations;

  • To enhance security measures in houses and restricted areas;

The ‘Brain Pro’ App was designed to assist students. It can be used:

  • To analyse results from mental maths, cycle and other tests and identify areas of weakness that students need more practice in;

  • Remind students to submit homework on time;

  • Collate assignment deadlines to create reminder pop-ups;

  • Remind students to remain hydrated throughout the day.

All students who joined this challenge earned a participation certificate.

We are delighted to announce that the Brain Pro app team achieved joint runners-up in this competition, which was entered by international schools all over the region:
Pratyush 6.01
Haider 6.01
Lina 6.02
Alkhattab 6.05

Many congratulations to the runners-up, and well done to all who took part!

Year 6 Online Party

Dancing, laughter, happy memories and a few wistful tears as the party came to an end... online events are the new normal, and they are starting to be just like the real thing as we all become used to the current way of life. Everyone, young and not so young, had a wonderful time on Wednesday from 5-6pm at the online Year 6 Disco. Many thanks to Mr Doyle for organising the event and for helping everyone to have a good time while being sensible and mindful of others. Sincere thanks are also due to Ms Mohi for creating the music playlist so we could dance the afternoon away. Well done to all the Year 6 students for being great company for one another at the online party.

In other news..

  • End-of-year reports for Years 3 to 6 are scheduled to be released on Sunday 27 June via the iSAMS parent portal.

Maths Day

Report from Mr Drennan and Mr Smith

For the second year running, Maths Day has been an online event. Throughout the week, students have been taking part in online competitions to answer the most correct questions in Times Table Rockstars and Prodigy Maths. Collectively, the students in Y3 - Y6 have correctly answered a whopping 342,483 questions in TTRS and 17,234 questions in Prodigy. Well done to you all!

The students have also been attempting online mathematical challenges and puzzles designed to promote logical thinking and develop problem solving skills. There are some useful links on this slideshow if you want to try at home.

Years 3 & 4

Today children in Years 3 and 4 have been learning about the number system used by the Ancient Egyptians. The children also tackled different levels of missing-number pyramids before moving onto a complex mathematical problem involving building pyramids of different sizes. At the end of the day the children took part in our first ever TTRS Festival, where children competed against each other as whole year groups. Well done to everyone who took part!

Years 5 & 6

Today, Year 5 and 6 students have also been taking part in an investigation about the probability of rolling any score in a 2-dice roll using virtual dice and spreadsheets. They enjoyed the challenge and were surprised by some of their findings.

Abdullah and Jaden (5.10) creating their spreadsheet to predict outcomes of the 2 dice roll.

Talya, Lily, Olivia and Sam (6.09) working as a team to take on the challenge.

Ancient Egypt Day: Year 4

Queens, pharaohs, mummies... Ancient Egypt must have been empty today, because all its inhabitants were here in Bahrain, connected to BSB remote school.

Throughout the day, we have practised Ancient Egyptian Maths, learned Ancient Egyptian history and sung songs about the era. Thanks for all the super photos we have received, of everyone's lovely costumes and fun educational activities.

Check out this Google album of the day.

Iria swings into action

We may well have future golfing champions in our midst. Last September, Iria in class 5.07 entered the Future Champions Golf Tournament held by Bahrain Royal Golf Club. The tournament continued for nine months, ending on 4 June, with around a dozen young people competing every fifteen days. The order of merit positions changed many times over the weeks, motivating all competitors to try their hardest. Through her determination, perseverance and skill, Iria achieved an amazing second place overall! Many congratulations to Iria, and also to Mihir in Year 7, who attained first place.

Junior Duke Awards

Hearty congratulations to this week's two Junior Duke Award winners - James in class 3.05 for his Bronze certificate, and Mohamed in class 4.02 for his Silver Mini Duke award. Splendid achievements, demonstrating your commitment to be independent, capable young people. Very well done indeed.

#ItOnlyTakes20Seconds: Swimming at BSB Elements

Following on from last week's blog post, we have more students and staff who have sent us pictures raising awareness of the importance of learning to swim. Sabian is in Year 7 now, and continues to be a member of the swimming team. Nyall in Year 8, another team swimmer, is brother to Annabelle in class 4.01. Mr Williams, as well as being a PE teacher, is dad to Fabien in class 5.10.

Learning to swim is a vital life-preserving step, making it possible for young people to save themselves and others if they should find themselves in water. Swimming is also excellent exercise, for overall health and fitness. We very much look forward to the end of the COVID situation, whenever that may be, which will allow us to resume swimming lessons as part of the PE curriculum. Until then, BSB Elements Swimming provides a great opportunity for young people to learn to swim, and for experienced swimmers to keep their skills polished.

Please contact Tracey to book your child's place (marshallt@thebsbh.com). There will be several other sports offered through our Elements programme, including basketball, gymnastics, dance and taekwondo, so please contact elements@thebsbh.com for further details.

In other news this week...

  • End-of-year reports for Years 3 to 6 are scheduled to be released on Sunday 27 June via the iSAMS parent portal.

Report from Ms Gray

With the Tokyo Olympics fast approaching, we set our Year 5 and 6 students the challenge of trying to cover the marathon distance of 42km (26.2miles) by running, walking, swimming or cycling the distance over the last two weeks, developing 21st Century IT skills by using their mobile devices to record the evidence of their hard work. The challenge will continue for a third and final week before we embark upon our new challenge but, in the meantime, congratulations go to Faas (6.09), Alexandra (6.05), Hussain (6.10), Camila (5.06) and Paula (5.07) who were the first students to complete the challenge this week!

BSB Elements - Swim for Safety

Summer Holiday Swimming & Sports Opportunities at BSB

RLS Bahrain have launched their #ItonlyTakes20seconds Campaign, which highlights how quickly a child can drown, encouraging parents to ensure no child is left unsupervised near water and also actively encouraging parents to ensure their children learn to swim. Because of MoE COVID safety rules, we have been unable to undertake swimming lessons during curriculum time, so it is even more important that parents take up the opportunities being offered this coming summer. Our Elements Summer Swimming Camps are an ideal way to improve your child's swimming, led by Tracey Marshall and her expert team of coaches, so please contact Tracey to book your child's place (marshallt@thebsbh.com). There will be several other sports offered through our Elements programme, including basketball, gymnastics, dance and taekwondo, so please contact elements@thebsbh.com for further details.

Melio Competitions - Mahatva 3.02

A huge shout-out to Mahatva in class 3.02 who achieved highly commendable 3rd places in not one, but two Melio competitions last month: the Public Speaking Challenge and the storytelling Challenge. Terrific job, Mahatva. Well done!

Click on the image to see a super educational presentation by four students from class 5.11 - Rayan R, Sahar, Serene and Rayan OJ. They worked together as a superb team to put the presentation together. I hope you have as much fun as I did with the interactive quiz, although I am sure you will get a better score than I did!

Silver Mini Duke - Vaiga 4.07

Well done to Vaiga in class 4.07 for completing the Silver Mini Duke award, showing independence, maturity and initiative; an achievement to be truly proud of.

It is gratifying to see the Duke Award certificates rolling steadily in. If you are still working on yours, keep it up, and you could see your name here on the blog before the end of the school year.

Subject teacher conferences

After ironing out a few issues with the online booking system, we are going full steam ahead with subject-teacher parent meetings next week, 6-10 June. This is an opportunity to meet with subject teachers, following the meetings with form teachers that took place in term 2. Some parents have asked me why form teachers are not available for meetings this time around. It's because the form teachers are themselves subject teachers and, if they are busy seeing again all the parents they saw last time, they will have no time left to see the parents of other classes they teach. As always, if you wish to see a teacher who is not on the booking system, you are welcome to contact the teacher directly.

Booking appointments

1. Go go https://mychq.net/britishschoolbahrain/Login.aspx

2. Click the colourful iSAMS logo.
(Please don't type anything in the boxes.)

3, On the page that appears after you click the iSAMS logo, please enter the credentials you normally use to log in to the iSAMS parent portal.

Please let us know if you encounter any issues with the appointment booking process.

Virtual School Student Guidelines

For the best virtual learning experience, please be sure to follow these guidelines every day.

Learning never stops, whether we are on blended school, fully remote school or normal operations with everyone coming into school. We all want to see an end to the pandemic so that we can get back to normal, with clubs, sports, school trips, concerts and all the things we enjoy so much. However, we can keep our learning going by full, enthusiastic participation in virtual school at the present time.

Year 3 Ancient Roman Day

When I visited the Year 3 corridor today, I was amazed to see Ancient Roman people who had travelled through time to visit us in the 21st century. The Ancient Roman visitors enjoyed using modern devices, like laptops and tablets, and they told me that they used pigeons to send messages in the days before smartphones and email were invented. They showed me examples of the wonderful mosaics they used to make. Thanks, Ancient Romans, for teaching me about life in your time, and thanks to Ancient Roman mums and dads for the amazing costumes.

Head Student Team for Term 3

This term's Head Student Team has made a vigorous start, taking up the reins with enthusiasm and building on the solid work of their predecessors. They all received lots of votes in the Year 6 election we held, back in term 1, which decided the three Head Student Teams of the school year. Already, they have set up their own Google Form for students to make suggestions that will help us improve the school. Also, they are constructing their own Google Classroom page, where students will be able to join the Head Student Team in solving puzzles and challenges to stretch the brain. They are a truly dynamic team who, like the teams of the previous two terms, will leave a lasting impression on BSB Juniors, when they eventually move on to the Senior School.

Fatema wins Silver

Superbly well done to Fatema in class 3.09, who achieved second place, in her age category, in the worldwide COBIS Coding Competition. To reach that awe-inspiring standard, Fatema had to design and code her own game application, to impress the judges more than almost anyone else in the world. Incredible work, Fatema!

The judges had this to say:
" It has been fantastic for us all at Discovery Education to see how students and their teachers from schools throughout the world have been engaging in coding – once again, we've been hugely impressed by the number and standard of entries. Fatema's game is super fun to play; the design of the starfish maze is great; it has moving objects, bubbles and puffer fish with different point scores. The game runs for 60 seconds and the code and points are accurately tallied."

Mohamed rocks in Times Table Rock Stars

Mohamed in class 4.02 sets a blazing pace on Times Table Rock Stars. Check out the video to see Mohamed blast through the questions, answering accurately at two per second.

Instant recall is the key to success at TTRS. If you have to think, or count on your fingers, Mohamed will leave you standing as he jets away into the distance. Keep practising, and you can be that fast, too.

Wake up and walk!

Sebastian in class 6.03 set his alarm early last Saturday - he took part in a 5km charity walk, that started before sunrise, and was organised by the Ladies' Captain of the Royal Golf Club. Sebastian was the only entrant from BSB Juniors.

Well done, Sebastian - a great way to keep fit and to help others at the same time.

Silver Junior Duke Award

Special congratulations to our latest Junior Duke award winner, Kashvi in class 4.04.

Very well done, Kashvi - an achievement of which I'm sure you are very proud.

The Earth, our spaceship

Science fiction writers have explored the theme of self-contained spaceships that can fly through space for generations, carrying supplies to sustain their passengers indefinitely. Our planet is like that - it is our only refuge, in the vast expanse of the universe. The image has a strong message. First, the safety of the Earth is in our hands. Second, the stewardship of the Earth transfers from each generation to the next, hence the older pair of hands is passing the planet into the younger hands. Both pairs of hands cup the Earth securely as it transitions into the future. Please treat the Earth responsibly. Your great-grandchildren will thank you.

Bronze Junior Duke Award - Mahatva 3.02

Congratulations to Mahatva in class 3.02, who has shown independence and ingenuity in gaining his Bronze Junior Duke Certificate.

Well done, Mahatva. By undertaking the challenge and making this achievement, you show yourself to be a worthy adult of the future, who will take good care of the Earth for decades to come.
