Ancient Egypt Day in Year 4

What a dazzlingly splendid day it has been, bringing Year 4's study of Ancient Egypt to a spectacular close. Earlier this week, two hundred and fifty young Egyptologists visited a replica of a pharaoh's tomb, created in painstaking detail by our team of Year 4 teachers and learning support assistants. This morning, the Year 4 students gathered together for a spectacular concert, at which we were honoured by the presence of His Excellency Mr Mohammed Ahmed Shaaban, Ambassador to Bahrain of the Arab Republic of Egypt. Many thanks to parents who came to support the event. As we all know, events like this are an uplifting experience for every child who takes part. It is not so much about watching individuals perform. It is about every student taking part in a shared, collective enterprise, with the encouragement and presence of their parents. Here is a Google photo album.

Here is a presentation that was shared with us by Ameera and Zainab in class 4.07, where they have gathered a wealth of information about Ancient Egyptian gods, goddesses and pharaohs. Please enjoy reading.

Sports Day - Years 5 and 6

After a pause during the COVID years, students in Years 5 and 6 were delighted to return yesterday to Bahrain Rugby Football Club, for our annual Sports Day. The day saw a variety of sporting activities that combined fun with competitive sport. The afternoon sprint and relay finals were especially exciting. The cool weather was ideal for the day. Here is a Google photo album.

Sports Day medals will be presented to winners of the finals in school next week.

British Club World Cup Football Tournament

Report from Mr Drennan and Mr Williams

Last Friday, 2 December, the boys’ football team was invited to take part in a World Cup tournament at the British Club to compete against 10 other teams from around the island. It was a great experience for the boys as they got used to the intensity of 5-a-side football - using the walls to rebound and not being allowed in the goalkeeper’s area took a little while to get used to! After a few intense matches in the sunshine, both BSB teams were looking strong. As the morning progressed, Brit Club Brazil team emerged as a contender when they defeated the BSB Blue team. BSB White used their experience and fitness to remain unbeaten throughout the tournament and were the eventual winners of the trophy, which was a World Cup replica!

We worked really hard as a team. It was nice feeling to get my hands on a World Cup trophy - not many Scottish people have done that- Lewis

It was a great tournament - really nice to play against some new teams. We played really well and dominated the tournament. We deserved the trophy! -Viktor

Bahrain Schools Chess Championship

Report from Mr Connor

On Sunday 4th December, Nasser (3.08), Abdulla (6.06) and Kareem (10F) represented BSB at the Bahrain Schools Chess Championship. All three boys were a credit to the school with their behaviour, sportsmanship and humility. They played 6 games each, with all of them winning an impressive 4 out of 6. It was a nail-biting finale in all games, but the boys showed outstanding determination and concentration and we are so proud of their achievements. Well done to all!

VICTORY FOR THE BOYS' YEAR 3/4 FOOTBALL TEAM AT THE U-10 PSL TOURNAMENT

This week, on the evening of Monday 28th November, two teams from the Year 3/4 boys’ football club took part in a tournament involving 8 other local teams hosted by the Al Bayan School.

The BSB Blues were drawn in Pool A while the BSB Bulldogs were drawn in Pool B. Each team played a total of 4 group games with the top two teams progressing through to the semi-finals. The BSB Blues showed incredible resilience, togetherness and determination as they took 4 points from their 2 draws and 2 loses in their pool. The BSB Bulldogs performed exceptionally well, winning each of their pool games without conceding a single goal. This meant that the BSB Bulldogs went through to the semi-final round as winners of their pool.

In the semi-final, the BSB Bulldogs’ high-pressing and quick passing enabled them to secure a 4-0 win against the Bayan Bahrain School, sending them through to the final.

Facing them in the final was the Ibn Khuldoon National School. In a tense final, the BSB Bulldogs controlled much of the game but could not find a crucial goal in normal time. However, as the clock was ticking in extra-time, the Bulldogs’ hard work and outstanding pressing finally paid off with the goal they had been looking for. At the final whistle, the score remained 1-0 to the BSB Bulldogs, winning them the trophy.

Throughout the tournament, the students of both teams demonstrated fantastic sportsmanship and were a credit to the school. Their coaches; Mr Dryden, Mr Smith and Mr Williams, could not have been prouder.

It was also noteworthy how many parents came to support the two teams during the course of the tournament and this added to the great atmosphere on the pitch-side. Many thanks for your continued support.

The students of both teams should be immensely proud of their contributions and we will look forward to further tournaments in the future.

Years 5 and 6 Netball

On Tuesday 22nd November, we were delighted to welcome Nadeen School to BSB to take part in a friendly tournament in order to prepare for the upcoming PSL tournament in February.

BSB had 2 teams participating against 2 teams from Nadeen in a round robin tournament. The girls played 3 games each and enjoyed every minute of it. BSB Blue won all 3 of their games and BSB White won 1 of their games. All girls gained valuable experience and all left with huge smiles on their faces after a very enjoyable afternoon. They should all be very proud of what they achieved.

Gaelic Football

On Friday 18th November, the Year 5 and 6 Gaelic Football team attended a tournament at Bahrain Rugby Club. It was hosted by the Arabian Celts football club. Over 80 players attended the tournament. BSB were proud to enter 2 fantastic teams in this tournament, led by Mr Doyle and Ms Cosgrave. Both teams played with tremendous spirit, determination and discipline. One of the teams from BSB made it all the way to the final against a team from Arabian Celts. It was an exciting final, where BSB narrowly lost by a goal (3 points) in the last play of the ball. The team from Arabian Celts had a strong start and they led by 2 goals and 2 points at half time. BSB showed great focus and discipline to draw level with Arabian Celts after a superb goal. Unfortunately, a late goal by Arabian Celts in the last kick of the ball pushed them into the lead. All the players from BSB had a super time and they are looking forward to playing again in the future.

Kindness and Anti-Bullying

All outstanding schools have programmes in place to raise awareness of bullying, so that everyone knows how to prevent bullying and how to deal with it if it happens. BSB is no exception to that. This week, we have been focusing on Kindness, and understanding the need to ensure bullying does not happen within our community. As per our school anti-bullying policy, bullying is defined as behaviour by an individual or group, repeated over time, that intentionally and deliberately hurts, intimidates, harms or excludes another individual or group, either physically or emotionally.

We signed the anti-bullying pledge, by which we all agree to do everything we can to prevent bullying, and to stop it quickly if it starts. We focused mainly on the importance of kindness to make everyone feel safe, happy and welcome at school. We wore our purple ribbons proudly, to show that we are committed to kindness.

Here is a Google photo album.

Remember - if you ever see or experience bullying, speak out. Together we can stop it.

Founder of BSB - Mrs Welford

Today we were honoured to receive a visit from Mrs Welford, the founder of BSB, and her husband. The British School of Bahrain began as a villa school in the early 1990s, before moving to a small compound in Adliya, then onward to our present location. The school began with just a handful of students in Mrs Welford's home. After that, eighty students enrolled, and began studying on the Adliya compound. Today, BSB has over 2800 students.

The Junior Head Student Team welcomed Mrs Welford and we all enjoyed a very pleasant lunch together.

Do you have any old, wired headphones, please?

Many of us have boxes of old techno bits and pieces, in the spare room, or at the back of the wardrobe. If you have any old wired headphones that have a 3.5mm jack plug, and you no longer need them, we can put them to good use at school. If you do have any old, wired headphones to donate, Mrs Drennan (Computing teacher) will be very happy to receive them. Thanks in anticipation!

Living Languages

Report from Ms Menhinick

As language teachers, the most common question we get asked by parents is: “I don’t speak language, so how can I support my child at home?”

Little and often is the name of the game in languages, and we recommend doing a little bit of language learning every day, on top of what they cover in the classroom with their teacher. This can take place using a number of different tools.

Firstly, we have subscriptions to an array of online programmes at the BSB, which you can ask your child’s language teacher about, or you can email me: menhinickl@thebsbh.com

Secondly, Youtube is a wonderful source for songs, cartoons and child-friendly programmes and with parental supervision, it can be a very fun way to consolidate what is covered in class or to immerse a child into the foreign language for a short period of time. There are also programmes available on streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+ etc. We would recommend you check the content first, and your child’s language teacher will often have a list of recommended programmes which they can share with you, should you be interested.

Thirdly, an easy way to support your child in a foreign language is to take an interest in what your child is learning in class. You can ask your child to teach you what they have learnt, which offers them a wonderful opportunity to review what they have covered in class.

Please do not hesitate to email me if you would like any further information or if you can recommend a great programme in a foreign language, which your children have enjoyed. My email is: menhinickl@thebsbh.com

PE News

Last Wednesday, the Y5/6 girls' football teams attended the Primary Schools League tournament at St. Christopher’s School. The girls' team had been eagerly awaiting the football competition. They played five matches in all and only conceded one goal. They definitely showed resilience and determination, hoping to go all the way to the finals. They drew three matches and won two, only missing the semi finals by one point. Many of them are new footballers, so to have not lost a single match in a big competition such as this is a massive achievement. The progress that they've made since the beginning of the year is remarkable and some parents commented upon this. The girls' brilliant teamwork, goals from Fatima and Renad and some great saves by Ava made it into a wonderful experience. Well done, BSB girls under 11s and keep up the good work!

This is one of the biggest tournaments that the girls will attend this year. The girls did very well considering they have recently only got together as a team and with some only starting football this year. For the first game, BSB 2 were faced with the tough task of playing against St. Christopher’s United team. There could not have been a more difficult start as this team went on to win the whole tournament. In the second game, BSB 2 played Riffa and were very unlucky in this game, conceding by the narrowest of margins. Next, the girls played IKNS who managed to score 2 against a stalwart defence comprising Zainab, Reem and Prisha. The girls' performances were improving and in the next game, they played ASB. This game was one of the best performances of the day for the girls with Wiam chasing every ball up front along with Sasha, Aisha and Talya working hard in midfield. Again, luck was not on our side and ASB scored with the very last kick of the game. In the last game of the group, Fatima and Hala were introduced to the starting team for the game against Beacon to add extra attacking force. However, despite their efforts, unfortunately they could not get that elusive goal for the team. This was another very good team performance and, after some incredible saves from Valentina, we were unlucky to lose the game 1-0. Although the results didn’t go our way, it was a great experience for the BSB girls to play in this tournament. A big well done to all the girls for their efforts throughout the day. Thank you to the parents who came along and supported the girls in each of the games.

Future work will include refraction and reflection of light, rainbow and telescopes.

Year 5’s unit is entitled Properties and Changes of Materials and students have been busy looking at conductors and insulators; discovering soluble and insoluble materials and devising ingenious ways of separating simple mixtures. Future work will include investigating reversible and irreversible changes; the dangers of plastic pollution and the work of Marie Curie. Watch this space!

Chelsea Pensioners

For many years, the Chelsea Pensioners - retired soldiers who have served in the UK's armed forces, and now reside in the Royal Hospital, Chelsea - have visited Bahrain each November to join in our annual remembrance tradition. During the covid years, the pensioners were not able to travel. We were delighted to welcome them back today, in the form of Jimmy and Billy, two retired soldiers originally from different parts of England. Billy and Jimmy enjoyed meeting our junior Head Student Team, Jouri, Leo, Avani and Gatik. They also listened to a performance by the Junior Choir. They told us many stories, over lunch, about life in the army and now at the Royal Hospital. Did you know that the Royal Hospital is not a medical facility? Rather, it is a home for retired service personnel who would otherwise be lonely. At the Royal Hospital, they can find friends who have a lot in common with them.

Primary Maths Challenge

Report from Mr Drennan

This week, some of our most accomplished Maths students in Year 6 and Year 5 have been taking part in the Primary Maths Challenge - an exciting challenge aimed at students in Junior Schools in the UK and across the world. The PMC is designed to make pupils think outside the box. The questions, which can be on any area of Maths, are not heavily reliant on formal mathematical knowledge, and can be solved by logical reasoning. Here is an example question from this year’s paper:

The digits of the year 2022 total 6.
How many years will it be until this happens again?

Well done to everyone who took part. The table shows this year's top performers.

“The PMC was really nice but it was also very difficult at the same time. I guess that’s why they call it a challenge!” Raeed, 6.07

“The PMC was really interesting. It required a lot of out of the box thinking and solutions!” Ricardo, 6.07

“The PMC was definitely a challenge but when I read the questions and thought deeply about connections, it all became a bit clearer. It required a lot of logical thinking.” - Jana, 6.07

Swimming in the Cooler Weather

The BSB swimming pool and changing rooms are maintained at a constant, ideal temperature, all year round.

Silicone swimming hats are best, because they keep hair dry. Your child can keep their swimming hat on while changing after their swimming lesson. If they have long hair, your child should bring a small hair towel to wrap around their hair while changing.

Swimming is a vital part of the PE curriculum and participation is compulsory for all students who are timetabled for swimming, as per the recent email sent to parents of the relevant classes for this half of term. Please remind your child that their swimming lessons are very important, and that they must take part in every swimming lesson unless they have a note from their doctor to the contrary. There is no medical evidence that going swimming increases the risk of catching a cold, because the pool environment and water are clean and properly treated, in a way that does not cause allergy or irritation to children. As with all swimming pools, students are encouraged to take a brief shower after using the pool. There is no evidence that colds can be caught by going outside, or into another air-conditioned environment, after a swimming lesson.

By encouraging your child to participate fully in swimming lessons, you are helping us assure their future safety, as swimming is an essential life skill.

PSL Football Update

Boys' Squad: report from Mr Drennan

On Tuesday afternoon, the BSB boys' football squad took 3 teams to participate in the PSL football tournament. After a 2-year hiatus because of covid, everyone was excited to return to some competitive football against the other schools in Bahrain. It was a well-attended event with 16 teams participating. All 3 BS teams performed well and we eventually came away with the silver and bronze medals.

After a nervous start and a defeat against St Christopher’s School, BSB1 bounced back and went on to win all of their remaining group matches, eventually qualifying for the semi-final.

BSB2 got off to an extremely strong start and remained unbeaten in their group, with 5 victories and 2 draws, conceding only one goal along the way.

BSB3, playing together for the first time, put in a very creditable performance and should be proud of how well they played - 3 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats. Unfortunately this was not quite enough to qualify for the knockout stages.

The semi-finals were both contested between BSB and St Christopher’s School. BSB1 went down to a narrow 1-0 defeat against St Chris United. The other semi-final was eventually settled in extra time, as BSB2 demonstrated some excellent resilience and teamwork to defeat St Chris Athletic by the same scoreline.

In the final, St Chris United scored an early goal. All afternoon, in the short matches, the first goal had been pivotal and that proved to be the case again. Despite applying a lot of pressure, BSB2 were unable to get the equaliser and the match ended in a 1-0 defeat.

Overall, the boys should all be proud of their achievements on a long afternoon of football and they have also learned a few valuable lessons about playing in a competitive environment.

Thanks to St Christopher’s School for hosting the tournament and thank you to all of the parents who came along to support us.

“Our team played really well - I was actually surprised at how good we were. I made some amazing saves in the semi-final. I was a little bit disappointed that we lost the final but I was so proud of the team for getting there!” Khalid, 6.07

“The team worked really hard for each other. Even though it was our first tournament together, we linked up well and gave 100% for the team!” Donnacha, 6.07

Girls' Squad: report from Mr Arouche, Mr Burns and Mr Williams

It was great to get some more match experience playing together as a team. The girls were fantastic during the three matches that they played and really tried to implement the coaches’ advice and instructions during these games.

BSB 1 played BSB 2 to start off the afternoon. This was a fantastic game that finished 0-0. BSB 2 played very well and created lots of good chances including a penalty. Again, Ava was fantastic in goal and BSB 2 just couldn’t get the goal that would have proved decisive in this game.

BSB 1 then went on to play 24N and BSB played ARKS. BSB 1 tried hard but the 24N team had a bit more experience. The game finished 4-0 but the girls worked tirelessly throughout the game which was admirable.

BSB 2 defended very well against ARKS with Valentina making some excellent saves but again, could not get that important goal and the game finished 0-0.

Next, BSB 1 went on to play ARKS while BSB 2 played 24N. BSB 1 played very well but unfortunately could not convert any chances and earned a 0-0 draw.

In the other game involving BSB 2, the 24N team were emphatic in front of goal and won the game 6-0. It was a very tough game but the 'never give up' attitude and continuous effort was excellent from the girls. This type of attitude will be very important going forward in the remaining tournament and fixtures.

Overall, it was a successful afternoon and a great experience for the girls. Well done, everyone!

World Diabetes Day - 14 November 2022

The theme for World Diabetes Day 2022 is “Access to Care”.

100 years after the discovery of insulin, thousands of children around the world still do not have access to this medication or to care for their diabetes.

The aim of World Diabetes Day is to raise awareness of diabetes and help ensure that everyone has access to medical care. Many people in the world are living with diabetes and, because they have the right education and access to what they need, they are able to manage their conditions well, and live a healthy life. Modern technology is very helpful to people with diabetes, allowing them to monitor their sugar level closely, often with the aid of a mobile app, and maintain it within the right limits.

Kindness

It's kindness month, when we try to forget our own gripes and needs, and think about how others around us are feeling. Kindness costs nothing. A kind word, or message, when someone needs a boost, makes that person feel a lot better and, you know what? It makes the person who sends the message feel better too. Every day, every human being finds that things don't go exactly to plan, or they have to do something they don't want to, or they start thinking everyone in the world is luckier than they are. If we spread a little kindness, those feelings quickly evaporate and we can all appreciate the best gift we have - the company of other human beings, who know that we care about them.

Girls' Football

On Sunday afternoon, we had the pleasure of hosting Nadeen school for some friendly matches. After the staff development day's activities had ended, we had two teams of committed girls arrive at school to play in the challenge games. The girls had a total of three matches each including a BSB derby match at the end. To start with, both teams played a Nadeen team before switching opponents and then finished the afternoon of football by playing each other. There were mixed fortunes for the girls with BSB 2 drawing 0-0 with their opponents while BSB 1 battled to a 1-0 victory. In the second game, BSB 2 tried very hard but fell to a 3-0 defeat while BSB 1 won 4-0. All the girls played very well against Nadeen and should be proud of the way they represented the school. There were some great performances, notably Zainab, Sasha, Valentina and Wiam for BSB 2 and Fatima, Taya, Rumeysa and Renad for BSB 1. In the final game against each other, BSB 1 cruised to a 3-0 victory. BSB 2 had some great chances and could have reduced the deficit; however, Ava did everything she could to hold on to a clean sheet. Overall, Mr Arouche, Mr Burns and Mr Williams were very impressed with the effort of all the girls and it was great preparation for the upcoming tournament at St. Christopher’s. School. The girls have worked very hard over the last term and we hope that they can showcase this through some good performances next week.

Boys' Football

On Monday 31st October, we were delighted to welcome Nadeen School to Hamala to take part in a friendly tournament to prepare for the upcoming PSL tournament. BSB had 3 teams participating against 1 team from Nadeen in a round robin tournament. After a quick transformation from Halloween costumes to football kits, the boys were on the pitch and ready to play! The matches were all competitive and there was a high level of skill and teamwork on display. Lots of great goals were scored by all 3 teams, the pick of the bunch being a 25 year screamer into the top corner by Harry in 6.04.

Final Standings:

BSB Blue 9 points
BSB Red 6 points
BSB Yellow 3 points
Nadeen School 0 points

“It was my first match playing for the BSB and I really enjoyed it. My team played really well and I managed to score 3 goals!” - Malik, 6.07.

Thanks to Nadeen School for coming and well done to all the players who took part. We now look forward to the PSL tournament which takes place on Tuesday 8th November at St Christopher’s Junior School in Saar.

Think Pink

What a splendid day - BD1565 raised by the juniors for the Think Pink charity, and we all had a wonderful time during our breaks at the Party on the Pitch! Truly a win-win situation - a memorable day of breaktime fun in the sun, knowing that we have made a really big contribution to improving ladies' health at the same time.

Here is a Google photo album of the day's pink events. Don't miss the video of Mr Connor and Mr Graham performing Wonderwall!

Think Pink Swim

Report from Ms Gray

All week our swimmers have taken part in the Think Pink 1KM Challenge. Each squad has taken part in two of their afternoon sessions and have smashed their target, including senior swimmer, Konstantina, clocking up an amazing 6km total in her two attempts, with another senior swimmer, Pleun, not far behind her, totalling 5km. Our junior swimmers have achieved a total of 33.7km - an amazing distance! Mark Tjoonk swam 1.7km in one session and Rumeysa Vanizor 1.6km. Coaches have also done their part, I have completed the challenge and so has Mr Isaac!

We have all thoroughly enjoyed taking part and feeling good about what we can achieve as a team to raise awareness for this cause as well as raising money for the Bahrain Think Pink Charity. Congratulations to all of our swimmers who took part, we have totalled 71.7 kilometres, and raised BD44.5 for the Bahrain Think Pink Charity, which is a fantastic achievement!

Year 4 Dentist Visits

Report from Ms Graham, Head of Year 4

This week, Year 4 had a lot of fun visiting Dr Paras and his team at Ceram Specialist Dental Centre. The children spent some time asking the dentists excellent questions, using their knowledge and understanding of their recent science unit on teeth and digestion. They learned the importance of carefully brushing our teeth, how a filling is formed and some children sat in the dentist chair! We had a wonderful time and further deepened our learning.

Year 4 Expo Events

This half term, Year 4 have been using enquiry-based learning in their Humanities and Art lessons to research a chosen country, to then form a project leading to our super Year 4 Expo, which took place this week! We have been learning about our chosen country's capital city, national animal, national flower, physical and human geography, and climate. We could explain which lines of latitude and longitude our expo country is near! Our expos were fantastic and we were able to present our expo boards to another Year 4 class, sharing and learning and showcasing our beautiful art work.

Junior PE

Girls' Football

At training this week, the girls worked on fitness and faced some tough shuttle runs at the beginning of the session. It was a tough start to training and they showed great determination to get them completed. After the fitness work, they split into two teams and played two small sided games. These games produced a number of great goals as well as some fantastic defending. For the final fifteen minutes, the girls played a full match using the whole pitch. It was a very close contest and finished 0-0. Mr Arouche and Mr Burns rolled back the years to help out their teams. The girls are becoming more familiar with their positioning on the pitch and during the final game, they used the extra space very well. It was a fantastic session and one that everyone seemed to enjoy. The girls have made great progress as a team and now look forward to their next fixture against Nadeen after the holidays.

Junior Art

Year 3 students have looked at patterns in nature, at artists like Piet Mondrian and Kandinsky who used repeated patterns and colours in their artwork. We looked at patterns in different cultures and used pencil colours, oil pastels, paint and felt tips to recreate some of our own patterned artwork.

Year 4 students have been learning about countries and continents and Art from Around the World. They have been using their learning in Humanities to research a country of their choice, to prepare for a BSB Expo, where they will showcase their learning to another class. In Art, they have been using this learning to create pieces of art related to their BSB Expo country. They have created beautiful watercolour paintings, sketches and oil pastels of the maps, native animals and native flowers of their chosen countries.

Year 5 students are looking at drawing basic lines, shapes, and cartoons from their imaginations. Materials used: pencils, coloured and black markers, and pastels.

Year 6 students worked on famous buildings: the Eiffel Tower, the Grand Mosque, and the White House. Materials used: pencils, coloured and black markers, and pastels.

Click here to see all the art work.

Junior Languages

Year 6 French

In Mme Charlotte’s Year 6 French class, students learned about places in the town and were encouraged to identify these places by using cognates. Cognates are words in two languages which have the same or a similar meaning. Cognates are another important learning tool because by encouraging students to look for and use cognates, it increases children's knowledge and understanding of a foreign language by hundreds of words in a very short space of time. Be careful, though - there are some “false friends” which are words that look or sound the same but have completely different meanings. However, your child’s language teacher will always tell them when a word is a false friend.

Entertainment Live: Elf - The Musical

In past years, junior students have enjoyed visiting the Cultural Hall in the last week of the autumn term to see a live show performed by a professional cast of actors, from the UK and elsewhere. For the past three seasons, these trips have been on hold because of the global pandemic situation. We are delighted to be able to resume our annual Entertainment Live trips.

This year's show, at the Cultural Hall, will be the spectacular production 'Elf' from London's west end. The show consists of 18 cast members, and is the perfect experience to entertain and dazzle the audience before the winter holiday begins. This show is ideal for children in the junior school.

'Elf The Musical' is the hilarious tale of Buddy, a young orphan who mistakenly crawls into Santa's bag of gifts and is transported back to the North Pole. Unaware that he is actually human, Buddy's enormous size and poor toy-making abilities hint at his true origins. With Santa's permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his family and discover his true identity. This modern-day winter classic is sure to make everyone embrace their inner Elf!

The show trip will be in the week beginning 11 December, during the normal school day. The cost per student, including transport, will be approximately BD14. We are sorry for the high cost; however, this is a prestigious show with a large, professional cast and it promises to be an amazing experience.

The trip is open to everyone in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6. If you would like your child to go to see 'Elf the Musical', please complete this Google form - thanks. Class teachers will be collecting the money after the half-term break.

Music News

from Mr Broun, Director of Music

Ensembles and Music Clubs are a great way to learn new musical skills with others and are a free supplement to the weekly music class and instrumental/vocal lessons. Please speak to a member of the music team to find how to join one of our many ensembles or choirs.

Playing with others, be it in a class, band, ensemble or an orchestra, can deliver a number of benefits to a musician and offer transferable skills to the students academic studies.

It is great to see the Woodwind and String sections of the new Training Orchestra taking shape and flourish. To see a student's first steps as a musician, performing together with joy and excitement, is wonderful. We also look forward to the 18th October for the Beginners Concert in A14.

On 11th October, we had our first Soloists Concert of the year which was a fantastic fusion of Classical and Rock n Pop performances. Even for those who were not performing, there was a real sense of community at the concert and BSB students assisted with stage management and AV Technicians. This was a celebration of the many hours students and their BSB music tutors dedicate to their musical studies.

Swimming squad

I would like to wish our swimming squads the very best of luck in their first competition this Friday, October 14th. Some of our swimmers are competing for the first time so we look forward to seeing their results after all their hard work in training so far this term.

PE Think Pink

Next week our squad swimmers will be raising awareness of the Think Pink Breast Cancer Awareness campaign by seeing how many kilometres they can accumulate during their afternoon training sessions. Photos and their total number of kilometres will be reported next week. Ms Gray, Mr Isaac and Mr Burns will also be doing their part to 'clock up' the kilometres in the pool during their staff swimming sessions, whilst Mr Williams has opted to do his by running! How far will we all go?

Swimming Pool Maintenance

We are constantly monitoring the pool to ensure it is in perfect condition for swimming. Areas monitored include pool water quality, pump room operations, electrical equipment, pool decking and gutter grills. The pool water is tested at least twice a day to ensure chlorine levels, purity and pH are monitored. Thus, the pool is maintained as a safe, hygienic environment for children.

Al Aatah Legacy Football Tournament

Last Friday, we had both the Y5/6 boys' and girls' teams playing their first competitive football games of the year in the Al Aatah Legacy tournament. The tournament was hosted by Winners football academy and it was a really enjoyable day of football. Both teams performed very well throughout the tournament. The boys were on level points going into their last match and had to win well to be in with a chance of qualifying. They managed to win their last game 2-0 after some stalwart defending from their opponents. Unfortunately, this was not enough to get through to the semi-finals; however, the boys should feel proud of themselves as they played some fantastic football, gaining compliments from spectating parents and coaches. The girls were the only all-girls team at the competition and they gave a great account of themselves. A special mention must go to Ava and Fatima, who impressed throughout the tournament and were scouted by a Bahrain national team coach. Both teams showed fantastic team spirit and were superb representatives for the school. Although we did not come home with any silverware, it was a great experience that I am sure the students enjoyed. Well done, everyone!

U11 (Year 5 and 6) Friendly Football round-robin matches

Our boys' and girls' football squads will play a series of matches vs Nadeen School in preparation for the upcoming PSL football tournament in November. The matches will take place after school on Sunday 30th October for the girls and Monday 31st October for the boys. Good luck, BSB!

Year 3 and 4 Netball

In our session this week, we focused on applying our taught passes during match play. It was great to see so many pupils using chest passes accurately, pivoting and communicating with their teammates. Ms Sullivan and Ms Ings have been very impressed with how quickly our pupils have taken on the rules of netball and are applying them throughout our club sessions.

Table tennis - Years 3 to 6

The after-school Table Tennis club is now in full swing and has met on 3 occasions. Led by Mr Travers, the club consists of 24 students of all abilities from Year 3 to Year 6. Although some students have played before, the majority are complete newcomers to the sport. Enthusiasm, enjoyment and a strong desire to improve are evident in all members and the standard of play is improving at an impressive pace. Watch this space!

Athletics

Mr Graham and Miss Jhetam have been fine-tuning the Athletics club relay technique. We have some very strong individual runners and we have been focusing on how to work as a team in the relay event. We have been impressed with how well the athletes have improved in their transitions and relay technique.

Global Handwashing Day

October 15 is Global Handwashing Day, a day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives. This year's theme is Unite for Universal Hand Hygiene.

While washing your hands, remember to turn off the tap until you are ready to rinse, to avoid wasting water.

International Pink Health Awareness Day

On 19 October every year, the world turns pink to support the fight against breast cancer, the most common type of cancer among women.

This day is essential both to raise awareness of breast cancer and to raise money to fund new research, to improve quality of life for patients and to cover the costs associated with the condition.

We will be Thinking Pink on Thursday next week, 20 October.

Throughout the month of October, the world turns pink to support the fight against breast cancer, the most common type of cancer among women.

'Think Pink' raises awareness of breast cancer and generates funding for new research, to improve quality of life for patients and to cover the costs associated with the condition.

On Thursday 20 October, students are welcome to wear pink clothes for the day (please contribute 1BD) and, if they wish, to take part in the fun activities at break time (please contribute another 1BD).

All contributions will go to support the Think Pink charity, whose aim is to improve women's health.

Students who have PE lessons on Thursday should also bring their BSB PE kit, please, to wear for their PE lesson.

Head Boy Leo and Head Girl Jouri announced the events for next Thursday at today's Good Morning BSB performance.

Zaina's Aquathlon

Zaina in class 4.08 competed in an Aquathlon race on Saturday 8 October, involving a 50 metre swim and a 100 metre run. Zaina finished first and took her place proudly on the winner's podium.

What a super achievement, Zaina! Very well done indeed.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parent-teacher conferences for Years 3 to 6 will be held during the week 16-20 October, before the half-term break. The conferences will take place via video link using School Cloud, to avoid parents having to travel to school and find a parking place.

The booking system is the same one we use for after-school clubs. The system will open at 12:00 midday on Monday 10 October for parents to make an appointment with their child's class teacher. The booking system will remain open until 12:00 midday on Thursday 13 October. The class teacher will relay any information that has been given to them by specialist subject teachers.

To log in to School Cloud, you will need to go to https://thebsbh.schoolcloud.co.uk/ and use the same login details that you used to sign your child up for after-school clubs. We have also emailed you a reminder of your login details - if you have not received the email yet, it should arrive at some time this evening.

School bags

Students in Years 5 and 6 need to bring a small bag to school each day, to carry their device and pencil case from lesson to lesson as they move around the school. It's not a good idea to carry a large bag around all day, because it is heavy an takes up a lot of space in the corridor. Bags with wheels are not suitable for a building that has stairs. A laptop bag with padding is the best way to protect devices while moving around the school.

World Teachers' Day

Enormous thanks for all the lovely wishes, greetings, messages and tokens of appreciation that the teachers received yesterday from students and parents on World Teachers' Day. The kind messages made everyone feel very happy.

Message from Nurse Anju Mathew

As the cooler autumn weather comes, schools all over the northern hemisphere carry out routine class checks for head lice. This is because the weather at this time of year provides ideal conditions for lice to spread. Head lice like to live in clean hair, and anyone can get them. If someone gets head lice, there is no need to panic. Lice and nits (the eggs laid by the lice) are straightforward to treat and to get rid of. If Nurse carries out a routine check on your child's class, here is the standard email you will receive:

Dear Parent,

We carry out routine head checks periodically. Head lice are quite common in schools at this time of the year when the weather seems to provide ideal conditions for the lice to spread.

We would like to advise parents to check all members of the family for signs of head lice or nits (the tiny white eggs that can be found stuck to the hair shaft close to the roots).

If you do find any evidence of lice then we advise you to act as follows:

  • Buy an appropriate medicine from the pharmacy – the pharmacist can advise as to the best treatment available. Follow the directions.

  • Remove any nits with a nit comb. This is important to prevent nits hatching and re-infesting the hair.

  • You will have to repeat the treatment.

  • Please remember to check all family members and treat them as required.

  • Keep your child at home until treatment has been successful and the hair is completely clear of infestation.

  • On the morning of your child’s return to school, he/she should be taken to the school nurse who will check that the hair is clear.

As a preventative measure, may we remind you that all long hair should be tied back during the school day.

Best regards,
Anju Mathew

Languages

Message from Ms Menhinick

Many parents often ask how they can further support their children in languages, and we are pleased to tell you that the school has a subscription to the award-winning platform Linguascope (https://www.linguascope.com). Linguascope is a website offering interactive resources in Arabic, French and Spanish, as well as other languages. It is organised in topic areas and the materials are presented via a host of immersive multimedia activities. The site covers all topics encountered in lessons throughout the year and also includes printable worksheets. As part of our licence, all our students can access the Linguascope website from home. All your child needs is our username and password, which you can get from your class teacher or you can email menhinickl@thebsbh.com. Junior PE and Sport

Football

Report from Mr Arouche and Mr Burns

It was the final training session before the upcoming tournament on Friday. The selected team for the tournament went to work on some positional tactics with Mr Arouche while the other members practised passing, defending and shooting with Mr Burns. Towards the end of the session, the selected members played against the others to give them their first match working together as a team. The match itself was very enjoyable and all the girls performed very well. Valentina made three fantastic saves while Sasha, Prisha and Hala defended tirelessly. Aisha and Wiam worked hard in midfield and had a great battle with Renad and Lila. The game finished 3 -nil after a brace from Fatima and a goal from Nadia. The girls have made fantastic progress and it will be good to get some game experience on Friday. With more games on the horizon, we hope the incredible effort and enthusiasm continues. Please view the tournament poster by clicking here if you would like to come and support our teams.

Good luck to our girls' and boys' teams in the Al Aatah Legacy Football Tournament this weekend!

Gaelic Football

Report from Mr Doyle

Gaelic football has once again proved to be a popular club this year. Coached by Mr Doyle, the team continued to practise hand passing in today's session. The players are becoming more familiar with the technique and have started running and handpassing. We played a fun skilled based match at the end.

Year 6 Swimming

Report from Ms Gray

Year 6 swimmers have been developing their swimming techniques in the four strokes during this half term and this week Ms Gray's groups have started working on butterfly. In addition to swimming strokes, we have been learning personal survival techniques and also lifesaving, including shouting, reaching and throwing rescues to a conscious casualty. This week we have started looking at how we rescue an unconscious casualty and in the picture you can see some of our students from 6.07 who learnt how to bring 'Alan', our rescue mannequin, safely off the bottom of the pool.

Maths Curriculum Presentation last Tuesday

Mr Drennan and Mr Smith

Many thanks to parents who were able to attend the Maths Curriculum Presentation on Tuesday 27 September. We understand that not every parent was able to be present, and it's helpful to be able to review the presentation slides, so here they are.

When supporting your child's learning at home, please help them to see Maths as an exciting subject with lots to explore. The first priority in the junior years is instant recall of multiplication tables. Regarding challenging concepts such as Fractions, please remember that children learn at different speeds and in different ways, and the curriculum spirals around to revisit and reinforce skills. If a student finds something hard the first time around, they will get a chance to learn that skill again later. Your child's teacher is always willing to answer any questions you have, and to guide you on how best to support your child's learning at home.

Music: Instrumental and Vocal Information Afternoon

Report from the Director of Music

It was great to see students and parents enjoying the Instrumental and Vocal Information Afternoon on 27th September. Students watched expert performances by Zain (Guitar), Rania (Violin), Jania (Violin), as well as our very own BSB teacher, Mr Pearson, on the Drum Kit. Also as part of the event, Ms Egan talked about the importance of music in schools and Mr McBirnie gave a demo lesson on the Trombone. It was exciting to see children trying instruments and there was particular interest in Brass instruments and the jSax! If you are interested in joining the Instrumental and Vocal programme, please email the team on instrumentalmusic@thebsbh.com.

New Instrumental and Vocal Parent Portal

A warm welcome to the new Instrumental and Vocal portal. Here you will find timetables for your Instrumental and Vocal lessons as well as latest news, information regarding concerts, and events. If you are a member of the programme, please sign into the portal using only the email address you registered with.

We are looking for students who can play the Violin, Viola, Cello, and Brass & Woodwind instruments to form ensembles. Please visit the music department for more information.

Junior PE: Year 5 and 6 Girls' Football

Report from the PE Department

With the news of the upcoming tournament, excitement in the squad is building. At training, the girls showed great enthusiasm and determination with the hope of being selected for the team. After a warm up, the girls went straight into a competitive match. Again, there were some fantastic individual performances and all of the girls made it very difficult for Mr Arouche and Mr Burns to choose only ten players. The game itself was another close encounter and it took a well worked free kick to separate the teams. After a handball at the edge of the box, Fatima stepped up to take the free kick. While the opposing team were getting prepared for her to have a shot, she calmly passed it to Laleh who confidently slotted it past the keeper. Congratulations to the girls who have been selected for the upcoming tournament. If you haven’t been selected this time, please don’t be disheartened as we will have more tournaments and friendly matches soon.

Class Photographs

The school photographer will be visiting school soon. Please see the schedule, for the day on which your child's class group photo will be taken. The photos will be taken during the school day.

For those who would like an individual photo, the photographer will be in school on 9 October, which is scheduled to be a public holiday. The photographer will be available on that day for anyone who wishes to have an individual or family photograph.

World Heart Day

World Heart Day is an opportunity for everyone to stop and consider how best to use heart for humanity, for nature, and for you

Use Heart means to think differently. To make the right decisions. To act with courage. To help others. To engage with this important cause. The heart is the only organ you can hear and feel. It is the first and last sign of life. It is one of the few things with the potential to unite all of us as people.

Music Ensembles at BSB

Message from Mr Broun, Director of Music

Ensembles and Music Clubs are a great way to learn new musical skills with others and are a free supplement to the weekly music class and instrumental/vocal lessons. Please speak to a member of the music team to find how to join one of our many ensembles or choirs.

Playing with others, be it in a class, band, ensemble or an orchestra, can deliver a number of benefits to a musician. These include:

· Encourages you to listen to how others play and exposes you to different sounds and approaches.

· Encourages you to listen harder to your own sound.

· In combination of the first two points, encourages you to listen to how your sound blends with others in terms of quality, tone colour, volume and dynamics

· Encourages you to listen and “feel” the music in synchronisation with others.

· To look up from a score and watch someone else for cues, timing and pulse.

· Maintaining a steady even pulse resisting the urge to push on or pull things back.

· Pushes you a little beyond your comfort zone in playing things you wouldn’t otherwise play on your own

· Improves sight-reading and technique

· Increases musical understanding and appreciation of working with others to achieve a musical outcome.

And, one of the most important of all, the joy of creating music together!!

Year 5 and 6 Girls' Football

Again, a massive well done to the girls who attended training this week. As you can imagine, it is extremely difficult to play in the heat but the girls showed great resilience and enthusiasm throughout the session. The girls started with a warm-up and then practised passing, ball control and dribbling before putting the different skills to use in a match situation. There were fantastic performances all over the pitch with some outstanding tackles and defending from both teams. A special mention must go to Renad who found herself in space in the opposition half and she immediately made use of her dribbling skills, scoring a magnificent goal that proved to be the deciding one. Mr Arouche and Mr Burns were very impressed with the attitude shown by the girls and are looking forward to training next week to see them play in another match.

Music

A warm welcome from the Whole School Music Department. I am so excited about what we are offering in music this year through the Music Curriculum, Instrumental and Vocal lessons, and Events and Concerts.

The Whole School Music department's aim is to enable all children and young people to learn to play an instrument and create music together, sing, and have the opportunity to progress their musical interests and talents, including professionally.

This means all children and young people:

• experience a broad musical culture at BSB, accessing high quality curricular and co-curricular music, and progressing into appropriate qualifications

• access the expertise, instruments, technology and facilities they need to learn, create and share their music

• engage with a range of enrichment opportunities to play and sing, to perform, create and experience live music, and have their music heard

• have opportunities to progress their musical interests and talents, and routes into a variety of music careers

• are supported by a skilled and dynamic workforce

We welcome two new staff members to the music team and they would like to say a few words:

“Hi, I am Scott McBirnie from Edinburgh, Scotland, and my musical journey began with taking piano lessons when I was seven years old. I then went on to graduate from the University of Edinburgh with a Bachelor of Music with Honours which focused on performance and composition. In addition to the piano, I am an experienced brass player and have enjoyed performing with larger ensembles such as the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland, the Ahmadi Ensemble in Kuwait, St. David’s Brass Band and the University of Edinburgh Symphony Orchestra to mention but a few. Prior to joining the British School of Bahrain I was Lead Music Teacher in an international school in Oman.”

“My name is Elizabeth Egan, and I am delighted to take on the role of Head of VMT for the coming academic year. This is my first year in Bahrain, I am originally from Ireland and I have spent the last 5 years teaching music in the UAE. Since graduating from the CIT Cork School of Music with an Honours Bachelor of Music, I went on to further my studies completing my Postgraduate in Music Education in the University of Limerick. I have been involved in choral, singing, ensemble playing, piano tuition, classes in music theory and musicianship and primary and secondary classroom teaching.

I have had the pleasure of calling into Junior music lessons this week to demonstrate some String instruments such as the Violin and Cello. The interest and enthusiasm was just wonderful to see, certainly some budding musicians!”

We offer an array of Instrumental and Vocal Lessons and there will be future demo’s for Woodwind, Brass and Vocal. These individual and small group lessons run separately to academic class lessons, and are optional. We have a team of specialist tutors who are regularly trained..

Instrumental and vocal lessons are subject to availability, and some popular instruments may have a waiting list. It is encouraged to sign up for lessons as soon as possible to ensure a spot in our programme. We have almost 90 students already signed up to the programme and numbers are growing each day.

Lessons are available for the following:

Flute

Oboe

Clarinet

Saxophone

Bassoon

Trumpet

Trombone

Violin

Viola

Cello

Piano*

Voice

Guitar*

Percussion*

Arabic Oud

*limited availability and there may be a waiting list. Please do try an orchestral instrument due to being able to perform as part of an ensemble rather than a ‘solo’ instrument such as the Piano. Performing others, be it in a class, band, ensemble or an orchestra, can deliver a number of benefits to a musician, and is a social and fun activity.

If you would like your child to join, kindly fill the following Instrumental and Vocal Music Registration Form. For each additional instrument or lesson, please fill in a new form. Should you wish to know more about our individual instrumental and vocal lessons please email us at instrumentalmusic@thebsbh.com or visit the Elements office.

Instrumental and Vocal Registration form

For those who have already started instrumental and vocal lessons at BSB last year, I hope that your child has enjoyed the opportunity to have individual lessons and that they will continue for many years to come. The registration form is still required at the beginning of each school year, but there is no need to fill in a registration each term as the programme runs for 30 lessons. You can cancel at any point provide you give us a written notice of 6 lessons.

The music department will look forward to meeting you in person at one of our events and concerts.

Best wishes,

Jerome Broun

Year 5 and 6 Girls Football - Congratulations to all the girls who attended the first training session for the BSB Year 5 and 6 girls Football Team. In total, we had 19 girls who battled the heat and after a good warm up and some fitness work with Mr Burns and Mr Arouche. They displayed their wonderful passing, dribbling and shooting skills.

It was fantastic to see the girls working together and becoming more confident as the session went on. Mr Arouche and Mr Burns were very impressed and hope that the girls can continue to work hard and practise so that the team can have a successful season.

Healthy School

Just a reminder of our preference for healthy foods in school, as per our policy. If you wish to send in a snack for classmates on your child's birthday, a healthy bite such as cut fruit is best.

We prefer not to have unhealthy foods such as doughnuts and cup cakes sent in. Thanks for your support.

Wonderful Week

We have completed our first full week of the academic year; a fulfilling and worthwhile experience for us all. What is it, I wonder, that makes the BSB such a special place, so full of warmth, cheer, fellowship and support? I think it has a lot to do with Respect, one of our core values. Hundreds of times each day, I see young people greeting their teachers and friends politely and with sincere empathy. That shows how much everyone cares about the people around them, understanding others' needs and genuinely wanting to help. It is a true sign of the respect we all have for one another. It is part of what draws everyone toward BSB, and keeps us here. Long may it continue.

Term 1 Clubs

Online signing up has worked well throughout this week. Email confirmations for clubs are scheduled to be sent to parents during the weekend. We are still working on the results of this week's sports club trials. Once that is done, we shall be able to finalise the lists for all clubs, and we shall be able to send the confirmations, most likely on Saturday.

Welcome Back!

It truly was a joy to see the children bouncing into school this morning, for their first day of fully normal school in two and a half years. The students spent the first part of their day settling in, getting to know their teachers and their classmates. After that, they began the day's lessons and enjoyed burning off energy at their two break times. We are all delighted to be back at school with the children, and we all wish everyone a successful academic year.

Have a lovely weekend. See you all on Sunday.
