A big thank-you to everyone who has already completed the COVID-19 Vaccination Survey.

Whether or not your child has been vaccinated, please would you complete the survey if you have not already completed it? Music News

from Mr Pearson

What an exciting time we've had in our Junior Music lessons! After eighteen months of modified learning, we were finally able to get our eager hands on some musical instruments. In the second half of the Autumn Term, Year 3 students prepared for their wonderful Winter Showcase, while Year 4 rehearsed diligently for the superb Ancient Egypt Day. Ukulele learning was the name of the game in Years 5 and 6. It was lovely to see all the children demonstrate passion and resilience, discovering a wide range of chords and playing along to a plethora of songs in their lessons. In the first half of the Spring Term, Year 4 students continued with rehearsals - this time for their fabulous VE Day performance. Years 3, 5 and 6 developed their understanding of notation by playing tuned percussion with mallets - mainly focusing on xylophones and glockenspiels. It was wonderful to see the children working together as a 'class band' to play a variety of songs. In the Spring Term, all Juniors year groups learned percussion - particularly focusing on a range of African drums. The children are developing their understanding of rhythm, while performing together as a team.

The Amazing Alien

Khalid in class 3.06 has written and published his own book, 'The Amazing Alien'.

Greeny, an extra-terrestrial, goes on a tour of the solar system and encounters an ice monster on the frozen planet Neptune. To find out how the story ends, ask Khalid, because he may have a copy of the book for you to read.

Maybe there will be more Greeny stories in the future. Looking forward to reading them.

Ancient Greece Day - Year 5

Who says time travel is impossible? Two hundred and thirty-five Ancient Greek time travellers visited BSB today, resplendent in their costumes, unfaded by the millennia. They spent the day re-living aspects of Ancient Greek life, including their own city states, art work and olympic multi-athlons.

Here is a Google photo album of the day.

I never knew how good Ancient Greeks were at computing, until Mrs Drennan told me today. This week, Year 5 students have been coding their own version of the Ancient Greek myth Pandora’s box on Scratch. Ask your child to show you their version. Check out this one, from Ricardo in class 5.03.

St Christopher's School Music Festival

Yesterday, the splendid news was announced, that two BSB Junior students have been acclaimed at the prestigious St Christopher's School Music Festival, which was held as an online event this year. Annabelle in class 5.01 was the overall Level Two Winner (and was Highly Commended in Level One Vocal), and Jana in class 5.03 was Highly Commended for Level Two Instrumental. What terrific achievements! We all look forward to hearing more of your music in the concert halls of the future.

Here is the Grand Final video. You can find Annabelle's piano piece at 23:04, and the announcement that she had won Level Two at 47:38.

In this video, you can find Jana's violin performance at 2:08:40.

Take a look through the videos and you'll find many super performances from BSB students.

Under-11 Primary Schools League Football Tournament

Report from Mr Drennan and Mr Williams

On Monday of this week, the Under-11 boys’ football team took part in a tournament at St Christopher’s Junior School in Saar. BSB entered 2 teams in the competition and played against squad teams from Bayan School and St Christopher’s School. Both teams performed extremely well in the windy conditions. As it was a friendly tournament, there were no trophies on this occasion. However, BSB Team 1 finished at the top of the league with 5 victories and 2 drawn matches along the way. The event was a fantastic afternoon of football and everyone who played should be very proud of themselves.

Sean, captain of the unbeaten BSB 1 team, said, “It was a great team performance and we did well to battle the wind as well as the opposition!”

Lewis, Year 5, said, “I was really happy with the team performance and I was delighted to score a goal! I can’t wait for the next tournament.”

Thank you to St Christopher’s School for hosting the tournament and thank you to the parents who came along to support.

Netball News

from the PE department

On Sunday this week, the girls’ Junior netball team took part in a friendly tournament at St Christopher’s Junior school. The BSB team played against teams from Nadeen School and St Christopher’s School. The girls played five matches and enjoyed every minute of them. They won two, drew one and lost two. They gained valuable experience and all girls left with huge smiles on their faces after a very enjoyable afternoon.

They should all be very proud of what they achieved after only a few practice sessions.

Renad in Year 5 said: “It was a great experience playing my first ever netball tournament. We all worked so well together as a team and I can’t wait for next year.”

Spring Camp 2022

Here are some exciting opportunities available at BSB during the April holiday.

Art News

from Ms Welland

Students are reminded to bring in their personal art work from home to show to their peers in classes.

This is a new incentive to encourage learners to make connections with their learning at home and encourage learners to work in collaboration with their peers to generate creative design ideas.

Thank you for all of your support in anticipation.

Year 5 & 6 Sports Day - Wednesday 23 March

Y5/6 Sports Day blasted back onto the calendar with our most ambitious programme ever, including a swimming gala, football competition, benchball and volleyball. Students were offered a choice of programme. The result was a day of super sporting endeavour, enjoyed and appreciated by all. Many thanks to the PE department for making the event possible.

Report from Mr Belcher

Wednesday 23 March was the turn of Years 5 & 6 to enjoy their Sports Day. We launched a ‘new style’ event this year, which enabled students to select the activities they wanted to participate in during the day. There were some fantastic 25m and 50m swimming races, as well as some exciting relays, which enabled Dragon to take an early lead in the Sports Day rankings.

In the development football games, students had fun competing against each other in the pool games and, in the exciting final, Pegasus and Phoenix drew, so both shared the top scores for that event.

In the fun bench ball and volleyball competitions, students enjoyed playing a round robin tournament and all points scored in their games were converted to house points.

In the competitive football competition, there were some hotly contested games, but Griffin were crowned champions with a 2-0 win over Pegasus in the finals.

Arabic week 2022: Arabic Language, a bridge between civilisations

The Arabic language is a pillar of the cultural diversity of humanity. It is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, used daily by more than 400 million people. Arabic Language week is celebrated every year at BSB in March since 2015.

In the diversity of its forms, classic or dialectal, from oral expression to poetic calligraphy, the Arabic language has given rise to a fascinating aesthetic, in fields as varied as architecture, poetry, philosophy and song. It gives access to an incredible variety of identities and beliefs and its history reveals the richness of its links with other languages. Arabic has played a catalytic role in knowledge, promoting the dissemination of Greek and Roman sciences and philosophies to Renaissance Europe. It has enabled a dialogue of cultures along the silk roads, from the coast of India to the Horn of Africa.

This year's Arabic Language week theme "Arabic Language, a bridge between civilisations" is a call to reaffirm the important role of the Arabic language in connecting people through culture, science, literature and many more domains.

Junior Boys' Football Team

Report from Mr Drennan and Mr Williams

On Monday of this week, the junior boys’ football team were delighted to take part in a friendly development tournament at St Christopher’s Junior School in Saar. BSB traveled with 2 teams and they played 14 matches between them, scoring some great goals and winning plenty of matches along the way. Most importantly, after almost 2 years without any competitive football, they gained valuable match day experience which will stand them in great stead for the future. All of the boys were buzzing with excitement and they all agreed that it was great to be back out on the pitch, particularly in their smart new kits!

Hamza, tournament top scorer with 5 goals, said, “It was an amazing experience to play a tournament after a long break. I really enjoyed playing against teams from other schools.”

Thank you to St Christopher’s School for hosting the tournament and to ASB and Nadeen schools for taking part. Next on the fixture list is the U-11 PSL tournament on Monday 28th March.

We are delighted to be holding our annual Sports Day for Years 5 and 6 on Wednesday 23 March. The event will take place on the school site, throughout the day.

Students have selected their events for the day and need to come to school wearing their PE kit and ensure they have their hats and sunscreen as it will be hot. They need to bring their water bottle (named) and ensure they have enough food/ snacks for the day to keep up their energy levels. If they are taking part in the following events they need to be additionally prepared:

Swimming gala: wear their swimwear under their PE kit and bring their hats/goggles/towel/ flip flops & underwear.

Football: they need shin pads and long socks, plus goalkeeping gloves if that is the position they would like to play.

Unfortunately, we are not able to invite parents to spectate at the event.

Cricket News from Ms Gray

We were very fortunate in years 5 & 6 over the last two weeks to have had a professional cricket coach come and deliver some taster cricket sessions during our PE lessons. Artha, from the Bahrain Cricket Federation taught our students bowling techniques as well as a fun game of 'speedy cricket', which our girls really excelled at! It was a great opportunity for some of our students to have a go at a new sport, and for others it reignited an interest in a sport which is 'on the up' in Bahrain. We wish Artha and the Bahrain Women's team all the very best in this weekend's Gulf Cricket Cup, especially as it is the first time Bahrain has entered a women's team into this event. We will be providing information in the near future on sessions available to our students, hoping to get lots of girls involved in particular in order to add to the Bahrain drive to promote women's cricket.

Year 5 Ancient Greece Day - Thursday 31 March

Infinity and Beyond Maths Investigation

Enormous congratulations to Rayan 6.02 and Sahar 6.10 for completing the very challenging Infinity and Beyond Maths Investigation - a commendable achievement. Mathematics is a fascinating area to study. The more deeply you get into it, the more interesting it becomes. Very well done; keep on investigating!

Cricket Taster Sessions

Message from Mr Williams

This week our Year 5 classes enjoyed a special cricket lesson from the coaching team at The Bahrain Cricket Association, during their PE lessons.

The sessions were designed to give an insight into how to play the game of cricket and the skills involved. The children enjoyed taking part in the many different challenges set by the coach.

This included reaction games, catching and throwing challenges and the 4 ball blast game - where two teams face-off against each other in a quick-fire batting and fielding competition. One team hits four balls out into the playing area and the fielding team then has to collect the balls as fast as they can and place them back on the stand.

This was an excellent way for the children to demonstrate what they had learnt from the session using their batting, communication, teamwork and throwing skills throughout the game.

Looking ahead: Shakespeare Day - Wednesday 16th March

Message from Ms Rogers and the English Department

As part of our English unit, we will be celebrating Shakespeare Day on Wednesday 16th March.

On this day, you will have the opportunity to come to school in costume. Costumes can be from the time when Shakespeare lived or from one of his plays. For example, you could dress as a King/Queen or even as a Fairy from A Midsummer Night's Dream. He also wrote about Romans, Ancient Greeks and Ancient Egyptians so you can use some of your ideas from previous years!

During this day you will be taking part in a range of fun cross-curricular activities related to Shakespeare and his plays.

Junior Duke Award

Congratulations to Saisha in class 3.07 for completing the Bronze Junior Duke Award.

Saisha had to achieve a number of objectives to qualify for the award; she approached them in her customary thorough and organised manner.

All students who have signed up for this year's Junior Duke Award scheme, let's follow Saisha's great example, and complete your award tasks as soon as you can. Looking forward to seeing more awards in future weeks.

Young Musicians of the Gulf 2022

Enormous congratulations to Ali in class 6.05 for reaching the semi-final of Young Musician of the Gulf 2022. His phenomenal achievement inspires us all, and we look forward to hearing more of Ali's wonderful piano playing, moving forward.

The standard of the competition was extremely high, and we are all very proud indeed that Ali is part of our school. Excellent job, Ali; keep on playing for us, so we can continue to enjoy your superb performances. Here is the competition website where you can find all the performance videos.

Book Week and World Book Day

We have learned a lot from a super week of reading, enjoying our favourite books and discovering new ones. Regular, frequent reading, aiming for good understanding, is the single best way of improving our language skills overall.

Let's not stop reading just because today is the last day of Book Week. Experience has shown that the best readers (and the best writers) are those students who read regularly with an adult outside school, and who have stories read to them. Hearing an adult read a book to them - in any language they understand - brings printed words to life for children, and boosts their all-round linguistic development.

Thanks to everyone who has made Book Week and Character Day possible. We have had a wonderful time dressing up, as well as reading new books from the Book Fair.

Instrumental Information Afternoon - Wednesday 9 March after school

COBIS Art Competition Entries

Huge thanks to everyone who sent in an entry for this year's COBIS Art Competition. The three entries that are being sent onward to the COBIS international competition are from Ethar 3.01, Isha 5.09 and Sahar 6.10. We wish them the very best of luck in the competition.

Supporting your Child's Physical Development

Message from Ms Gray and the PE Department

Following a spell of online learning, students often need a boost to improve their physical coordination, reaction time and overall fitness. We have provided PE activities each week for students to engage in which develop all of the aforementioned areas of development. In particular, it would be really beneficial if you could practise some throwing and catching skills with your son/ daughter in order for them to be able to engage more in the lessons. If you need some help with some basic techniques and some activity ideas, this Sport New Zealand document is an excellent guide to the basic manipulation skills needed for the activities we are currently working on.

Year 4 Eco-Artists

With an abundance of passion and creativity, Year 4 students have been studying the environment. They have been following the steps from an eco-artist to create art and useful objects from recyclable materials and they have learned about the importance of recycling and reusing materials.

They made: a skipping rope from plastic carrier bags, a jellyfish from plastic carrier bags and plastic cups/ bottles and 'keep cool necklaces' from sponges.

Year 4 VE Day

Enormous thanks are due to the whole of Year 4 - the students, the mums and dads, the teachers and the LSAs, who all worked as a super team to make the day happen. Many students were online, when they really, really wanted to be in school for such a special day. Every student was amazingly grown up about it, having a great day together, even though we were not all able to be in the same place. We all felt a great sense of belonging.

They day comprised a range of themed activities, including making gas masks and Spitfires, and taking part in 1940s games, while dressed as wartime evacuees.

Here is a Google photo album of the day.

Year 3 & Year 4 Sports Days

We were delighted to be able to hold our Sports Days for Years 3 and 4 this week, albeit in a modified form because of the current situation. Sincere thanks to the PE department for putting the programme together, and to all the students who took part, in true BSB sporting spirit.

Special thanks go to those students who were online because of contact tracing. I know how disappointing it is when you miss out on a special event like this. I was heartened to see all the photos and videos that were uploaded from home, by online students, who did their own sporting activities, indoors and outdoors. There are some things in the world that we can change, and some we cannot. However, we can choose way we respond to things, and it is our response that determines how happy we feel. At such times, I always look to the example of BSB students, who take things in their stride, keep smiling, carry on and do the best they can. You really are a shining example to us all.

Here is a small Google photo album with some images from the two days.

Looking ahead: Book Week and World Book Day

Changing lives through a love of books and shared reading

Message from Ms Rogers and the English Department

This year marks World Book Day's 25th anniversary and the message for all children is 'You are a reader'. Our annual Book Week celebrations will take place in school on 27th February- 3rd March. The week will finish with a dressing up day on Thursday 3rd March when children are invited to come to school in costume as their favourite book character.

Book Week is a great opportunity to reinforce children's love of reading, which of course is the gateway to learning enjoyment. Regular reading is also by far the best way of improving writing skills.

After-School Clubs

After a gap necessitated by the current global situation, we are very pleased to launch our term 2 programme of after-school clubs. Clubs will take place after school, from 3pm until 4pm, starting in the week beginning 27 February, and ending on 31 March.

You can preview a list of the clubs we shall be running by clicking here.

Booking is first-come, first served, via an online booking system, which will open during the half-term holiday, on Monday 21 February at 10:00am Bahrain time. When the booking system opens, it will be possible to choose a maximum of two clubs for each child. (If your child has already been invited to an invitation-only club, they will be able to choose only one other club when the booking system opens on Mon 21 Feb.)

On Tuesday 22 February at 10:00am Bahrain time, the limit will be raised to 3 clubs per child, if places remain. On Wednesday 23 February at 10:00am, the limit will be raised to 5 clubs per child, if places remain. By opening the booking in this stepwise fashion, we give everyone the fairest chance we can, as there is a physical limit on how many students can join each club.

We will send parents an email with login details, for the online booking system, by the end of Sunday 20 February.

COBIS Art Competition 2022 - deadline Wednesday 23 February

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

A reminder of the mega-exciting news, that the seniors' drama department has offered to direct a play specially for junior students in Years 5 and 6.

If you are in Y5 or Y6 and you like acting, ask your parents if you can attend the auditions, to be held after school on 28 February and 2 March, in the seniors' drama room (B26a, upstairs on the first floor, next to the junior drama room).

If your parents agree, they can scan the QR code on the poster, and sign you up.

We must keep in mind that we do not know what the COVID situation in the world, and in Bahrain, will be, at the time we plan to have auditions and start rehearsals. We must be prepared for anything to happen, such as possibly having to postpone the show. However, we will be optimistic for now, and take the first steps.

Please also keep in mind that only a limited number of students will be able to take part in the show - try your best at the auditions, and be prepared for any outcome. Really successful people rarely achieve their goal at the first attempt, so keep trying and never give up.

Headteacher's Awards

Great job, all of this week's award winners. Wishing everyone a safe and restful half-term break. See you on Sunday 27 February.

Bahrain National Sports Day

This week, we were proud to celebrate Bahrain National Sports Day, by doing physical activities in our class bubbles. Online students also took part, connecting from home and sending in their photos and videos. The event was spread over two days, to facilitate distancing and to ensure as many students as possible could take part.

Read on for more news of upcoming BSB sporting events.

BSB Y3/4 Sport Days - message from the PE Department

We will be holding fun Sports Day events for Y3 and Y4 in the coming week, for all students in those year groups to enjoy.

Year 3 will have their Sports Day on Monday, 14th February

Year 4 will have their Sports Day on Tuesday, 15th February

This event will take place on the school astro pitch and will involve classes rotating around a number of sporting activities that they have been practising this half term. Students will remain in their class bubble and will be separate from other classes. Because of Ministry COVID regulations, we are unable to invite parents to the event. However, we shall try to capture the excitement and atmosphere through photos and videos that we will share with you.

Please could you ensure that you send your son/ daughter to school in their PE kit on their sports day, including their hat and sunscreen, as the weather has become a lot warmer. Extra snacks and a named water bottle would be beneficial as the children will be doing extra exercise.

Kind regards
Junior PE department

"Bring Your Own Device"

At the moment, because of the number of COVID cases across Bahrain, we are keeping class bubbles separate and reducing the number of staff who visit each classroom every day. Our 'Bring Your Own Device' policy has been working really well in Years 5 and 6, allowing students to connect to their teacher for subjects that are normally taught in sets, such as Arabic, Citizenship, Islamic Studies and RE. While the teachers are not moving physically around so many classrooms, it is of great benefit for students in Years 3 and 4 to also bring a device (tablet or laptop) to school, please, as many are already doing. This is specially important on days when your child has one of the subject lessons listed above. Many thanks.

COBIS Art Competition 2022 - deadline Wednesday 23 February

If you want to enter and have not yet done so, please remember the deadline is 23 February, during the half-term break.

Please see Ms Welland if you have any questions or email wellandr@thebsbh.com

Toothache Day - Wednesday 9 February

Yesterday was Toothache Day - not a day when we wanted people to have toothache, but a day when we wanted to think about how to avoid toothache. Click the image below and it will open in a format that is much easier to read.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Mega-exciting news - the seniors' drama department has offered to direct a play specially for junior students in Years 5 and 6.

Aishwarya's Poetry

Aishwarya in class 3.10 made a decision, of her own accord, to enter a a national poetry competition being organised in her home country. She used her initiative to go ahead and write a lovely poem, based on the competition's prompt and theme. She wrote the poem in very neat handwriting. The poem cheered me up when I received it, and I'm delighted to include it in this week's blog.

Junior Duke Award

Silver Duke Award - Congratulations to Saad in class 4.07 for starting this year's parade of Junior Duke Award winners.

To qualify for the Silver standard, Saad had to demonstrate independence, resourcefulness and commitment. I hope Saad will inspire everyone who has signed up for the Junior Duke Award programme this year.

Looking forward to seeing further Junior Duke Award winners in future weeks.

The Big Question

Message from Mr Belcher

Congratulations to our wonderful entries for The BSB Big Question Winter Series, with inventions and explanations on Aquaponics, Sustainable environmental inventions, prototypes for health and Fitness Smartwatch apps, Recycling and social impact devices and a remote control recycling bin to assist disabled and older generations, there once again was no shortage of talent on display. Inspired by these wonderful concepts, we are looking at potential ways of developing them into a larger scale to have a positive eco effect on our environment.

Turning some current yellow status into a positive, we have really enjoyed doing individual interviews with some of our Big Question Entries this week and they feature in our special Winter Series Creative Inventions

Layth gets vaccinated

Layth in class 5.06 has received not only his first, but THE first dose of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine available for young people aged from 5 to 11 years. Layth's is a fine example to follow, leading the way, showing us all that getting a dose of vaccine is safe, easy and a very sensible thing to do. By getting vaccinated, we help everyone in the world in the fight against COVID-19, because the more vaccinated people there are, the harder it is for the virus to spread and make people sick. So, getting vaccinated is not just about making ourselves safer - it's about making EVERYONE safer.

Welcome Back

The welcome is certainly warmer than the weather as we begin the new term. It was a pleasure, this week, to see the children coming back to their lessons, either in person or online, after the winter break.

The situation all over the world is still a challenge. As always, being with young people reminds me that they are so often the ones who set the example we should all follow. They adapt so quickly to new circumstances, taking everything in their stride, with a smile and an 'I can do this'.

Just a reminder that, if your child has travelled outside Bahrain, the Ministry of Education requires that they stay remote from school until ten days have passed after arrival in Bahrain. Please send us the Day 10 PCR test result before your child comes into school. The table shows the first allowed day in school for each arrival date. While students are waiting for the ten days to finish, they can access their lessons remotely, through Google Classroom and Zoom.

Thanks to everyone for following our school protocols and helping us keep the BSB community as safe as we can.
