Headteacher's News Thursday 13 December 2018

As this term draws to a close...

...amid a spectacular blaze of red and white, marking Bahrain National Day, I would like to thank everyone who made today possible - Mrs Sana Mansour and the Junior Arabic Department, Ms Khulood Sabah and the administration team, the senior students who revisited their old stamping ground in juniors to entertain us with traditional Bahraini dances... I am sure I have missed many people.

This term, we have been rewarded by many successes, and together we have overcome the occasional obstacle. At such times, I am always heartened by the wonderful sense of team spirit that prevails when parents, teachers and students work in harmonious pursuit of common goals. It seems that almost anything can be achieved.

I am not going to write a long blog today. I shall let the pictures, of the wonderful events of the past week, speak for themselves. Please have a restful winter holiday. Term 2 begins at 0745 on Sunday 6 January, 2019. See you then.

Year 5 'Britain Since 1948' Day

This week, Year 5 took part in a fun-filled event day: Britain Since 1948. Each class showcased fashion styles for a different decade by putting a spectacular performance for their parents. Ms Murphy, Ms Harling and Ms Mohi did a great job, teaching the children some old school hits and groovy dance moves. Then it was back to class to start an action-packed day. First, they created some outstanding ‘Pop Art’, inspired by Andy Warhol. Working in this comic strip style, the children created their own comic style words made famous by the artist Roy Lichtenstein. We can’t wait to display their work in class! After that, it was time for the Year 5 Dance Competition! Everyone showed off their best dance moves to a song from each decade.

The best dancers for each decade, who were awarded a very original certificate celebrating their moves, were:

1950s: Ibrahim 5.08

1960s: Beren 5.02

1970s: Charlotte 5.05

1980s: Rami 5.06

1990s: Zainab 5.05

Dance off: Ahmed 5.07 & Jad 5.04

Finally, each class hosted their very own version of the quiz show: ‘Jeopardy’. The class split into teams to competitively test their knowledge of Britain since 1948, by answering questions related to: fashion, music, technology and important events from each decade.

Here’s what Year 5 students thought of their day...

Luca 5.09: “It was a great day. I hope we made our parents proud. We worked really hard on the performance.”

Tala M 5.09: “It was really fun. I thoroughly enjoyed the day. My favourite part was creating the pop art.”

Tala H 5.09: “It kind of felt as if we had travelled back in time. I loved it!”

Emma 5.09: “I loved Britain Day. My favourite part was the tea party with Ms Simmons - she makes fabulous tea.”

The Hour of Code

This week, all children in Juniors participated in an Hour of Code. Using blocks to code, they helped the Grinch save Christmas, choreographed dances using Dance Party, used their creativity and problem-solving skills to explore and build underwater worlds, and created their own Star Wars Galaxies. Even top universities teach block-based coding, which can also be shown in JavaScript, the world's most widely used coding language.

It was a lot of fun. We learnt more about coding. -Azy and Hamish, 4.03

Class 4.08 - It was challenging! However, it was lots of fun and a great experience for children to practise and extend their coding skills.

Class 4.10 - It was great fun; however, we did find it a little tricky. Once we knew what to do it was easy to follow and create the codes.

Class 4.07 - It was really fun because we got a chance to make some code to move the Grinch! -Seif and Anas

Class 4.05 - I thought it was a little difficult at first but once you got the idea it became more fun as it got easier. I really enjoy coding. -Danial

Class 5.06 - I enjoyed it because it’s creative and you can code Steve or Alex in Minecraft. -Jemima

Class 5.03 - It’s a life changing activity! I did Dance Party and I loved it! -Alex

Class 5.04 - Hour of Code is so cool because you can do anything if you can code! -You

Class 3.02 It was so much fun! I really enjoyed it and I can’t wait to try more at home. -Adam

Class 6.09- I really loved the part when you could add your own blocks to make the animals dance on Dance Party! -Nico

Class 3.10 It was great fun to make our characters dance. We would love to code more at home!

Class 3.03 Minecraft was fun because I enjoyed building houses. I would use it at home.

Class 6.07 - Hour of Code taught me how to be an excellent coder. I loved programming my own Dance Party. -Nael

Tree Lighting at the Ramee Grand

The BSB Junior Choir went out and about this week. Here they are, lighting up the tree at the Ramee Grand Hotel's annual seasonal ceremony. As always, the children sang beautifully and the audience, including the guest of honour, HE Mr Simon Martin CMG, Her Majesty's Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain, were delighted.

Narnia theatre trip

A total of 1126 children, from Years 2 to 6, visited the Cultural Hall this week to see Narnia on Sunday's and Wednesday's trips. The children were keen to share their experience back at at school:

It was exciting and funny too. There was lots of dancing and I like dancing. The best part was when Lucy went through the wardrobe into another world. – Serene 3.04

It was really fun. I didn’t know the story before we visited the theatre but I liked it - especially the ending. The actors were very good too and they stayed in character until the end. – Zain 4.09

The show was really funny. The actors were very good and acted very professionally. I knew some of the story but other parts I only found out when we saw the show. The story was suitable for everyone and I like it that we had lots of year groups there. – Jad 5.04

It was very entertaining because the actors performed at their best. The story was very funny too. I also liked visiting this theatre and I’ve been there several times before. It had to be very big to seat so many people. – Jack 6.04

Year 4 Ancient Egypt Day

We rolled back the clock several thousand years today in Year 4. Everywhere we looked, we saw the glint of gold. Pharaohs, mummies, walking pyramids, Cleopatras galore... if it's ancient and Egyptian, Year 4 had it in abundance. The photos speak for themselves.

Year 6 visit to Al Fateh Grand Mosque

Students in Year 6, accompanied by their teachers, crossed the island to visit Al Fateh Grand Mosque as part of their studies of religion and culture. As well as the beautiful architecture of the mosque, we all enjoyed learning about its various parts and features, their significance and how they are used. We had a wonderful time and we learned a great deal. The students made these comments after the visit:

  • This was my first visit to a mosque and it was an amazing experience. I liked the shapes, the geometry and the calligraphy in the designs and patterns in the mosque. I also like when we were told how they were made and what they mean.- Aseem 6.07

  • I really liked all the decorations inside the mosque and it was interesting finding out where they came from and how they were made. I also liked it when the lady explained all about the Islamic religion. – Zainab 6.08

Next week: Hour of Code

Next week is Hour of Code week! Officially, the event runs from 3-9 December. We will run our week from 2-6 December.

All children in Juniors will take part in a fun coding activity during their Computing lessons. To find out more about this exciting event, please read this leaflet, watch this video and have a go at some of the coding activities.

Seasonal Songs on the Steps

Thanks to everyone who paused for a moment, as they headed eagerly to class, to listen to the Junior Choir performing their seasonal set. The show was a perfect combination of old favourites (such as Rudolph, with his red nose) and jaunty new melodies, all with a festive flavour as we approach the final two weeks of this intensively busy term.

If you weren't able to make it, please enjoy the video.

Also, don't miss the Junior Choir's seasonal set at the Royal Golf Club on Saturday 1 December at 5pm, for the tree-lighting ceremony.

Rehearsal for Year 5 Britain Day

Today's junior assembly saw a full-scale rehearsal for the upcoming Britain Since 1940 theme day, to be held by Year 5 students and their teachers on Wednesday next week.

Primary Schools League Football Champions

The boys' football squad had a splendid afternoon at St Christopher's School yesterday, taking part in the PSL tournament. In addition to their customarily excellent sportsmanship and team spirit, they came away with a superb set of results. Head over to the sports latest news page for a full report with pictures.

Spooky Sagas - Writing Competition

Great news from Ms Pillay, Ms Rogers and Ms Edwards - there is a chillingly spooky, fantastically exciting writing competition going on right now! It's the Young Writers Spooky Sagas competition, open to everyone aged between 7 and 11 inclusive. All you have to do is write a really powerful spooky story, in 100 words. Each student is allowed to enter one story. The entries have to be sent in by the school, so when you have written your story, please give it to your class teacher (Years 3 and 4) or your English teacher (Years 5 and 6). You can find out more information by clicking here. To enter, you must give in your story to your teacher by the end of this term. Don't forget to put your name, age and class on it.

Music & Drama Showcase Celebration

Please join us on Wednesday 12 December at 5:30pm for a Showcase Celebration performance given by the gifted and talented young artists from the Junior Music and Drama groups. The children have been rehearsing diligently throughout this term, giving up their break times and practising daily at home. Learning to play a musical instrument benefits a young person in many ways - it can help with overall progress at school; it encourages routines and self-discipline, and it brings a great deal of satisfaction and pleasure. There is no magic ingredient - all you need is the will to have a go, and the commitment to a few minutes of practice every single day. You can get a preview of some talented students in action by clicking here.

Primary Maths Challenge - message from Mr Drennan

Some of our most talented Maths students in Year 5 and Year 6 have been taking part in the Primary Maths Challenge - a fun and exciting challenge aimed at students in Junior Schools in the UK and across the world. The PMC is designed to make pupils think outside the box. The questions, which can be on any area of maths, are a great starting point for discussions throughout the year. The questions are not heavily reliant on formal mathematical knowledge, and can be solved by logical reasoning.

The students will find out soon if they have qualified for the bonus round, which is scheduled for February 2019.

“The Maths challenge was difficult but fun at the same time!” - Mughdo 6.09

“It was really tough but I gave it my best shot!” - Louna 6.09

“There were lots of cool, interesting questions.” - Jack 6.09

Target-based learning

At any time, students have a manageable number of learning targets to work on. As they meet those targets, they progress to new ones, so they always feel in control of their learning. Self-assessment, with guidance from teachers, is very helpful in promoting progress. Targets are shared with parents via individual Seesaw ePortfolios, which the students update themselves, in consultation with their teachers. You can find out more about learning targets, and how they complement our twice-yearly formal school reports (December and June) by clicking here. If you have any difficulty accessing your child's Seesaw ePortfolio, please contact the class/form teacher. December reports are scheduled to be available to parents via the portal at mis.thebsbh.com on Monday 10 December.

Year 5 students update their learning targets on their ePortfolios

Year 5 Britain Day - message from Ms Murphy

During next Thursday afternoon's junior assembly, the Year 5 students will be having a dress rehearsal for their Britain Day performance. Each class has been assigned a decade. During their performance they will wear clothes inspired by that decade. The students should come to school in normal BSB uniform and bring their costume with them, to change into.

The Britain Day performance will be on Wednesday, 5 December at 9.30am in the Multi-Purpose Hall (the one with the purple floor). As Britain Day is an all-day event, Year 5 students should come to school wearing their Britain Day costumes. Year 5 parents are invited to attend the performance at 9.30am on Wednesday 5 December.

Staff training - Wednesday 28 November

Just a reminder that students in Years 3 to 6 will finish school at 12:00 midday on Wednesday next week. Staff will remain at school until 4:00pm, doing a variety of training activities.

Year 4 Sponsored Scurry

This week's weather was a great improvement on last week's. Year 4 students were able to proceed with their Sponsored Scurry for charity. The collective scurrying amounted to an astonishing number of kilometres - well run, Year 4! The students also completed a mammoth Spell-a-thon and we eagerly await news of the total they raised.

Class 4.06 Assembly

Class 4.06 gave us a memorable performance this afternoon, commemorating the centenary of the armistice that ended World War 1 in 1918. Check out the video. Ryle showed us the Silver Falcon trophy, which we shall present to the BSB house (Dragon, Griffin, Pegasus or Phoenix) that raises the most money for charity through the Birthday Challenge. As I'm sure we all remember, the Birthday Challenge is when you choose to give some - or all - of your birthday present money to charity. If you want to participate, just tell your family, and they can give the money to a charity of your choice. Just send us the receipt when you've done that, and we'll add your funds to the house total.

Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Good news - the organisers have given us a little longer to collect the money for the trips on Sunday 2 December (Years 5 and 6) and Wednesday 5 December (Years 3 and 4), still at the discounted rate. If you would like your child to go and haven't yet sent in BD12 (includes admission and transport), please do so on Sunday morning. If you need another copy of the permission letter, click here for Y3/4 and here for Y5/6.

Men in Scarlet

We were delighted to welcome In-Pensioners John Griffiths and Peter Henry, who kindly included BSB in their itinerary while visiting Bahrain this week. John and Peter met the Junior and Senior Head Student Teams, visited classrooms to take part in lessons, and attended a musical celebration of their visit in the Atrium Gallery. It is always an honour to host our guests from The Royal Hospital, Chelsea, and we hope to see them again next year. The children benefited from the gentlemen's perspective on their historical studies. We all wish them a safe journey back to London.

Into Orbit

Have you ever shaken the hand of a real astronaut, who has flown around the far side of the Moon? These children have. Hugo, Rishab and Atif, along with two friends from the Infant department, visited Wadi Al Sail Boys' School with Mr Brant this week. There, they heard a fascinating talk given by Colonel Alfred M. Worden, the Command Module Pilot of Apollo 15, which flew from Florida to the Moon in 1971. During the long fall back toward Earth, Colonel Worden performed the first ever deep-space EVA (space walk) - see the photo to the left. The students all say they would like to be astronauts when they grow up - maybe we shall see them on the first manned mission to Mars one day. Certainly, they will never forget the day they met a real Apollo astronaut. When they arrived back at school, the students shared what they'd learned from Colonel Worden. Atif said, "He told us about his breakfast, and his rocket which was 323 feet long. He said you feel as though you are not moving because all you see is black outside."

Alfred M. Worden in 1971

Year 5 IMAX visit: Hubble 3D

Over two days, every Year 5 class had the opportunity to visit the IMAX cinema in Muharraq this week, to supplement their scientific studies of the Earth in space. A good educational film can boost children's learning like a rocket, igniting their interest and jettisoning their customary routine for an hour or two. Variety of experience is an essential element of a balanced education. The film was made using 3D technology, hence the special glasses everyone had to wear. The children came back with reports of M&M sweets floating towards them in zero gravity, along with spherical droplets of water and crazy acrobatics that astronauts would not be able to manage on Earth.

Don't forget to visit the Junior Sports page for the latest updates on swimming, soccer and Gaelic football.

We have a published author in our midst!

The Creative Writers of the Juniors have been busily writing away. Our current Head Girl, Heidi, had a story published in the Gulf Young Writers of the Year book for 2018. Take a look in the junior library for a copy. There are also stories written by many other young authors. When you've read them, why not have a go yourself? Keep your work in a safe place and, as soon as we hear of any future writing competitions, we'll let you know.

Class 4.03 Assembly: Fill Your Bucket

It's Friendship Week - did you know that your bucket should always be full? We fill other people's buckets when we say positive, pleasant things. We dip people's buckets when we forget ourselves and say things that are less pleasant. Everyone feels better when their bucket is full. After the show (check out the video further down the page) we filled the buckets of the Migrant Workers' Society, presenting them 80 blankets and vouchers for new air conditioning units, which were handed over by the Junior Head Student Team to Mrs Neelaja Shotre from the MWS. The items were bought with funds raised at the bake sale we held on 25 October.

Arabic Reading Challenge

Preparations are under way across Bahrain to launch this year's Arabic Reading Challenge. Last year, BSB achieved brilliant results with 2 students (one from Seniors; one Juniors) reaching the semi-final. We are hopeful that, this year, more students will participate from BSB and maybe we can reach the finals!

The goal is to encourage as many students as possible to read Arabic stories and complete the passport with story summaries.

The guidelines are:

•The competition is open to Arabic students from Y2 to Y11.

•The aim is to complete all passports by reading 50 Arabic story books (5 different passports).

•Non-native Arabic speakers can also participate; their target is to complete 25 books.

•Students who participated in 2017-2018 can continue from the book they last finished, if they still have their passports.

Book requirements:

•Books read are to be diverse, covering Science, Literature, History, Islam.

•It is not permitted to include magazines, newspapers, encyclopaedias and school books used in the curriculum.

•The length of the book varies with the student's age:

◦Y2 to Y4 from 5 - 20 pages

◦Y5 to Y7 from 20 - 30 pages

You can start to read now, if you have not started already, until the third week of March. If you need any help, please contact Mr Mahmoud (Head of Arabic in Seniors) or Mrs Sana Mansour (Head of Arabic in Juniors).

Good luck and lets read!

Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

We are delighted to announce that we are planning to take a party of students to a live dramatic adaptation of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, based on the popular children’s literature classics written by C S Lewis.

In 1940s London, four English children are sent to a country house where they will be safe. There, Lucy finds an old wardrobe that transports her to a snow-covered world called Narnia. With her brothers Peter and Edmund, her sister Susan – and Aslan the Lion – they fight against Jadis, the wicked White Queen, to restore the wintry world of Narnia to normal.

Your child's class will be seeing the show on either Sunday 2 December or Wednesday 5 December. Please check the letter (paper copy) that your child was given this afternoon. Please could you return the slip and payment as soon as possible next week? We have to meet a payment deadline in order to secure exclusive access to the Cultural Hall on each of the two days, with no other school parties present. The price we have passed on to you is heavily discounted for prompt payment, as mentioned in the letter.

Sports update

The exciting new rugby coaching programme, mentioned in last week's news blog, has made a flying start and there has been lots of great feedback from the students and the coaches. If your child is interested and has not yet signed up, please contact Ms Gray, Head of PE in Juniors.

This afternoon, at the end of school, the junior boys' football team has a friendly away fixture with Juventus Academy. Additionally, the Gaelic football squad has travelled to Bahrain Rugby Football Club to take part in a Gaelic football tournament. We wish them all a successful afternoon with great sportsmanship and team spirit. Over the coming days, please check out the sports page of the blog for news.

Mornings before school starts

Students in Years 3 to 6 arriving before 0730 should be supervised by their parents or carers, please. Also, students in Years 3 to 6 are not permitted to play ball games before school starts, for safety reasons, unless they are taking part in an organised activity supervised by a member of staff. Thank you for your support and understanding.

4.05 Class Assembly

Thanks to Class 4.05 for continuing the class assembly season today with a splendid lesson for us all on how to conquer our worries and fears. Please enjoy the videos below - parts 1 and 2 of the show.

Have a super weekend.

Half-term break

Well done to everyone for a great first half of term. The children have worked indefatigably since 2 September and it is wonderful to see them delighting in their progress. I met a group of Year 6 students this morning, beaming broadly as they uploaded their latest targets and evidence to their ePortfolios on Seesaw. Today's junior charity bake sale, in aid of Migrant Workers, raised over BD250. We can all enjoy a week's breathing space to recharge our batteries before returning to school, ready for more learning, on Sunday 4 November. Boys who have been enjoying a break from wearing ties, during the warmer weather, should start to wear their ties again from 4 November, please.

Eco-Rangers are back!

Wonderful news - the BSB Junior Eco-Rangers will be starting up again, under the leadership of Ms Chapman. Eco-Rangers are ecologically-aware children who promote recycling and care of the environment, having great fun at the same time. Students in Years 3 to 6 who would like to be Eco-Rangers should fill in this Google Application Form, please. To access the form, children should log into their school Gmail account.

Advance Notice - Staff Training Wed 28 November - early finish for students

On Wednesday 28 November, children will finish lessons at 12:00 midday, to allow time for staff training in the afternoon. This half-day has already been built into the school’s quota of teaching days; we just needed to finalise the date. School buses for that day have been re-timed accordingly.

Washrooms in the Administration block

Just a gentle reminder that the toilets in the Administration block should not be used by children changing clothes for after-school activities. The changing rooms between the Sports Hall and the Multi-Purpose Hall may be used instead.

4.07 Class Assembly - Healthy Living

It has been a very wholesome week, with lots of healthy hydration. Classes kept track of how many students drank water before school, at first break, at second break and at the end of the school day. As Ms O'Brien pointed out in last week's blog, the human body needs regular water to stay healthy. Class 4.07 taught us, among other healthy messages, to listen carefully to our parents and carers in the first of this school year's class assemblies this afternoon. Please enjoy the video.

Charity Birthday Challenge

Well done to Nirvan in Class 6.04 for being the first to complete the Birthday Challenge. Instead of receiving presents on his birthday, Nirvan asked family members to donate the money they would have spent on presents to charity instead, raising BHD235.500. Nirvan chose to send the money to BSPCA. Here you see Nirvan after receiving his medal, which was provided and presented by Ryle, this term's Head Boy and founder of the Birthday Challenge. Ryle's hair is pinker than usual today thanks to Think Pink Crazy Hair Day - more on that below.

Think Pink - Crazy Hair Day / A Touch of Pink

Our juniors' collection for Think Pink, a charity that promotes health by fighting cancer, raised a splendid BHD453.775. Thanks to everyone who helped. Children in Years 3 to 6 had the option of wearing Crazy Hairstyles for the day, along with a Touch of Pink to add to their uniform. They each contributed 500 fils if participating. Crazy Hair Day was launched by this term's Head Girl, Heidi. The wearer of the craziest hairstyle in each class was presented with a certificate. Here are the winners, along with this week's other proud bearers of certificates.

Healthy Hydration for Children

This is a message from Ms O'Brien, our Health Education Curriculum Leader

Next week is Healthy Living Week at the BSB. In Juniors, the focus is going to be on ‘Healthy Hydration’ - How and why it is so important for us all, especially kids, to stay hydrated. This is something many of our students struggle with - not bringing water bottles to school or even forgetting to drink after physical activity be it at break times or during PE lessons -and it is essential that we teach them how learning good habits can benefit their health. Outside of school too, this message needs to be habitually reinforced.

Water is essential to life. Our bodies are made up of approximately 70 percent water. Your lose water throughout the day when you sweat, breathe and visit the bathroom. It is important to replace the water you have lost to prevent yourself from becoming dehydrated. Children don’t always recognise that they’re thirsty, and if they’re not encouraged and reminded may forget to drink. Luckily, there are a few common symptoms which can help you to tell whether or not your child is dehydrated:

  • Headaches

  • Poor concentration

  • Thirst

  • Cracked lips

  • Dry mouth

  • Constipation

  • Lethargy

  • Dark urine

The amount of water your child needs will vary depending on their age, size and level of activity. For children under 8 years of age, at least 4-6 glasses of water is recommended. For children older than 8 years of age a minimum of 6-8 glasses is recommended. Kids need to consume extra fluid if they are playing sports or very active as well as on hot days or when they are unwell.

Tips to help your kids stay hydrated!

  • Pack a water bottle for school and when you go out. Try a frozen water bottle in summer.

  • Encourage your child to drink water before, after and during physical activity

  • Always ensure they drink water with meals and snacks.

Tips for children who don’t like water

  • Try adding slices of fruits such as lemon or orange to water, for variety and flavour.

  • Let your kids choose their own drink bottle or serve water in colourful glasses or jugs.

  • Be a role model! Make a point of drinking water with your kids.

Although water is by far the best choice, there are some other ways of increasing your fluid intake. The various choices, along with their benefits and pitfalls, are outlined in this healthy hydration guide from the British Nutrition Foundation.

Stay Hydrated!

Message from Mr Kerr, Director of Music

The String Orchestra will be available to all students currently learning violin, viola, cello and double bass. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of an ensemble where you can develop your skills and perform at Junior and Senior concerts. We will perform an extensive range of music that will allow students to understand various genres and musical eras from Baroque to 21st Century music. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at kerrb@thebsbh.com

Year 3 and their Inspirational Insides

Using the awe-inspiring power of virtual reality, Year 3 students have been looking at the internal organs of the human body as part of their Science studies. No-one was exposed to any x-rays, because the organs we were looking at aren't actually our own. The library of images comes from a computer database, activated when children point a mobile device at a special T-shirt with small QR-type codes on it.
