"No great genius ever existed without some touch of madness."

Aristotle

As we move closer to the end of the year, it is good to see children and their teachers enjoying the warm rapport they have established and having some fun. Year 1 rose to the occasion for Mad Scientist Day, sporting a wide range of suitably wild hairstyles and fashions. The carefully thought through 'walking water', 'moving pictures' and 'magic colours' experiments invoked a sense of awe and wonder and a spirit of enquiry. Many thanks to parents for providing the necessary encouragement, props and help with the cleaning up afterwards. Thank you too to all members of the teaching team for going above and beyond.

Competency in technology is something that has necessarily been embraced the world over in the past year and a half. Even in our very youngest students are starting to take ownership! I hope you enjoy the 'supertatos' created by children in Nursery using the Chatterpix application. They really made us smile.

By all accounts, children enjoyed their transition sessions this morning, getting a taste of their new year groups in September. Of course it is natural for children to experience a mix of emotions - often a fine line between between excitement and nerves. Children can rest assured that they will all have some friends and familiar faces with them.

On a personal note, I was delighted and relieved that teachers in Year 3 described present Year 2 children who will be moving to the Junior School as confident, polite, fun, tech savvy and beautifully prepared academically. Job well done Team Infants!

End of Year reports will be published slightly earlier than previously mentioned, on Sunday 27th June. We look forward to welcoming families of children in Year 2 to Virtual Graduation Ceremonies on Wednesday 30th June and term ends at noon on Thursday 1st July.

"Cooking with kids is not just about ingredients, recipes and cooking. It's about harnessing imagination, empowerment and creativity."

Guy Fieri

Over the course of the last year and a half there have been moments of realization that in some instances, actually 'online' is preferable and more practical than on campus. One example is parent teacher conferences. These are far more efficient online - no driving, no parking, no queueing, no running behind schedule! I am in no doubt that schools will continue to host these online long after the pandemic is over.

The cooking project in Year 2 has been another online success. With access to a far wider range of ingredients and utensils than could possibly have been available in the classroom, children created a magnificent variety of salads. Hopefully the start of many to come.

As we move closer to the end of term, children are looking forward to transition events on Thursday 24th June. We also look forward to congratulating Year 2 for completing the Infant School at online Graduation Ceremonies on Wednesday 30th June.

"Imagination and creativity are not the same. Creativity is imagination in action."

Sir Ken Robinson

Throughout the Infant School children take great delight in, and learn much, from role play. For three year olds, role play at the 'doctor's surgery' or 'beauty salon' is a great way for children to develop and practise new vocabulary in a safe enviroment.

Role playing superheroes, unicorns, dinosaurs and princessess can help children to develop empathy and identify good from bad. There is also no doubt that a superhero cape can encourage bravery!

As well as being fun, using imagination in role play improves creativity and original thought.

As ever, teachers and assistants led the way by modelling role play for Year 2 Explorers Day. Children roleplayed Christopher Columbus, Jacques Cousteau, Valentina Tereshkova and many more.

I hope you enjoy the selection of video submissions as much as we did! Many thanks to all families who supported children's creativity on the costume front.

" Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life."

Confucius

It is never too early to start preparing the students of today for the workplace of tomorrow. Communication skills, creativity and critical thinking are all firmly embedded in the curriculum so that children are prepared for an adulthood where, research suggests, they may have to adapt to several different careers during their working life.

It is however perhaps a sign of the times that during Nursery's "What do I want to do?" day, more children than ever before chose to be doctors, nurses and scientists!

Just as we have adapted themed days for remote learning, guest speakers have added spark where under normal circumstances school trips would have increased children's levels of curiosity.

We were delighted to welcome Grandpa Stick, a UK based storyteller to assembly. His recitation of "The Tail of the Whale" thrilled his audience. Playing with words is an excellent way to improve phonological awareness - an important pre-reading skill.

I hope you enjoy the photographs of some of the magnificent displays created over the last half of term. As ever, I am extremely grateful to Team Infants for going above and beyond to create such a stimulating learning environment.

" The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever."

Jacques Cousteau

There is no doubt that the necessary reimagining of themed days, whilst maintaining social distancing, has been challenging at times! Tried and tested games and learning investigations have often not been appropriate, so teachers and children have had to think outside the box.

As ever, Team Reception rose to occasion for Pirate Day. Children managed to walk the plank, dig for treasure and create the necessary telescopes, pirate ships and maps. Whilst I was observing the children at play, two things struck me. The first was the phenomenal independence and confidence of the children as they manipulated junk modelling items to plan their end products. There were very few pleas for help or adult intervention. Naturally this resulted in a greater sense of achievement and delight in their end products than in years gone by. The second thing was that actually, a pirate dress up day is perfect for five year olds as many of them are already missing teeth!

The nautical theme continued in Year 2 as a real life deep sea diver brought some colour and insight to the Sea Explorers topic. Thank you Mr. Maguire for generously giving of your time in an action packed week.

As we make the final preparations for a school inspection next week. I wish you a safe and healthy weekend.

"Nothing can dim the light which shines from within."

Maya Angelou

We were delighted to welcome children who are learning remotely to their own Gergaoun celebration on Thursday evening. The campus dazzled with fairy lights for the drive through - outshone only by the children's smiles as they collected sweet treats and traditional pots to decorate. The music and dancing by members of the Arabic department set the tone perfectly and all were relaxed and happy to be part of the occasion as children and teachers greeted each other like long lost friends.

Spirit of Recycling

In the Early Years, learning is a combination of child initiated and teacher led activities. It is lovely when a topic takes on a life of its own with inspiration coming from the children. Learning about the concept of travelling by sea in Reception led to much discussion about looking after our planet. Thank you Reception for reminding us to look after our environment. In the meantime Year 1 are enjoying building castles in the same spirit of environmental awareness. Reduce, reuse, recycle!

"Traditions are not the worship of ashes but the preservation of fire"

Gustav Mahler

We have been considering the way family memories, and stories passed down from generation to generation, can build a sense of belonging, pride and resilience in children. Similarly, particularly at this time, when life feels a little out of kilter, traditions can bring a sense of comfort. This year was the first time we have marked the Bahraini tradition of Gergaoun, the mid-point of Ramadan, at the BSB. Engagement levels were high across the board as children decorated their traditional money pots and danced to the music when the 'ferasia' visited classrooms. We are extremely grateful to the Arabic Team for making the celebration such fun for the children.

The Messier the Better

It did cross our minds, when 'Messy Writing Day' was considered for children in Reception, that children may simply get caught up in the excitement and that the 'Writing' part may pass them by! As ever, the children surprised us. The pictures leave us in no doubt about the progress in their letter formation and writing skills over the past few months. It was a pleasure to see the children taking such joy in writing.

We look forward to seeing N4, R.7, R.8, 1.7, 1.10, 2.9, 2.10, and 2.11 at the Ramadan drive through this evening.

"People are never too young or too old to look for human connection."

John Turturro

For the past year, educators of young children the world over have been contemplating ways for young children to connect whilst remaining socially distanced. Teachers of children who are learning remotely have often remarked that they have been amazed at how quickly some children have managed to connect online- sometimes a shared smile, giggle or raised eyebrow on screen is worth a million words!

In many ways, at the start of the year, it was more difficult to encourage connection on campus. The combination of masks, no sharing of resources and socially distanced seating was a challenge. A combination of socially distanced songs, dances, exercises, pair talk and roleplay scenarios have been implemented to ensure that the human need to connect is met. Fortunately, now the children seem to have taken ownership of their own socially distanced connection.

I was reminded that children in Year 2 will be transitioning to the Junior School this week - not by transition events scheduled on the calendar, but by the maturity and independence of the students as they made their way to their classrooms in the mornings. Clutching bags of materials to build their own boats, they were keen to tell teachers on duty about their plans, often arriving the next day with additional boxes and cartons to adapt their original designs. Explanations were mature, clear and thoughtful.

As ever, Ramadan has brought a lovely sense of peace to the school. We look forward to celebrating Gergaoun on campus on Tuesday 27th April and children are invited to wear party clothes or traditional dress on that day.

"Wear gratitude like a cloak and it will feed every corner of your life."

Rumi

We were pleased to welcome children back to School for the start of Term 3 and are delighted with the way they have settled back, so quickly, into the familiar routines. This week we have been fostering an 'attitude of gratitude' in the children, pausing to appreciate the things that we often take for granted. Partner talk and discussions have focused on things that make children happy - whether it is a particular taste, a smell, a sound, an object, a place or a person. Submissions for the Great BSB Gratitude Scavenger Hunt showed, time and time again, that in this particular year, it is family members that children appreciate more than anything else. This is particularly fitting at this special time of year and we wish all families who observe the Holy Month, Ramadan Mubarak.

Year 1 Pyjama Day

Term 2 ended with themed curricular days in all year groups. I hope you enjoy the images from Nursery's Messy Day, Reception's Treasure Hunt, Pyjama Day in Year 1 and Animal Day in Year 2. We are very grateful to all teachers, assistants and parents who thought outside the box to ensure that children continue to have excitement, variety and fun in safe, socially distanced ways.

Year 2 Animal Day

Congratulations Mark!

We look forward to assemblies marking the Holy Month of Ramadan next week and encourage families to contribute to the appeal in aid of the Migrant Workers. Donations can also be dropped at Mrs Nanda's and Ms Clarke's office.

" Fun is closely related to joy- a sort of emotional froth, arising from the play of instinct."

C.S.Lewis

We applaud the children who returned to campus this week for their phenomenal ability to adapt. Within a few hours, it already felt as if they had never been away. We also pay tribute to those children who continue to learn remotely. Remote education requires tremendous self discipline. Many adults struggle with this when working from home - let alone children! Recent assessments for children in the Infants confirm that a valiant effort all round is paying dividends as progress is made.

As we continue on the merry-go-round that 2020-2021 seems to be, teachers are finding, time and time again, that there is a need to rethink and prioritise. Planning teams make intelligent choices to ensure that learning time is used wisely. Reading in Key Stage 1 is usually taught in differentiated groups. This week however teachers made time to read with each individual. What struck me as I observed reading sessions were the glimpses of fun and humour as time was taken to spot interesting items in illustrations and to appreciate the humour in the stories. Sometimes the observations, comparisons and predictions made by the children were a little off beat, but that is all part of the fun. Teachers, by profession, are trained to tease out these moments of connection, shared attention and understanding. However, parents who encourage a love of reading by making story time fun, are worth their weight in gold. There is the key to the child's motivation , enthusiasm and love of books!

Water bottles

As the weather starts to heat up , there is an increased need to drink plenty of water during the course of the day. Water coolers are not permitted on campus at this time. Please make sure your child brings plenty of water to school each day, particularly on PE days.

Thank you.

'The audience embrace has unbelievable power'

June Havoc

Social interaction is a valuable part of a child's education and a vital part of their development. Teachers enjoy seeing children connecting online - catching each others' eyes and smiling in recognition. Online assembly, which can have up to two hundred and fifty participants at a time, is particularly enjoyable to watch as children spot familiar faces from other classes. The number of children attending online assembly has increased week on week since we introduced 'the student voice' both in English and in Arabic. The children enjoy nothing more than seeing their peers present live! The Year 2 children's reactions on the 'chat' when their peers are presenting are kind, encouraging and heart warming. We have also been blown away by the enthusiasm of children as young as three to take the mic.

Next week's assembly is on family memories. Every family has its' own characters and memories. Some become well loved stories of 'fortunes won and lost', 'hearts broken and mended' and 'colourful , bold adventures' that are handed down from one generation to the next. Such tales are a wonderful way of reminding children where they come from. Knowing that family members have thrived, through thick and thin, is a powerful way to develop resilience. "If I come from a family who got through that, I must be made of strong stuff!" This is perhaps a little too deep for children in the Infant School to understand at this point in time. However, I am in no doubt that they will enjoy reminiscing over a special family event. When flicking through some old pre COVID-19 family photographs of my own this week, I find myself filled with a new optimism.

For assembly this week children are invited to say one sentence and show a photograph of a family 'happy memory'. If your child would like to participate, please email me directly on infantsheadteacher@thebsbh.com. It would be helpful if you could include the relevant photograph with your child's name, so that I can add it to the slideshow. Thank you.

I hope you found parent teacher meetings valuable this week. Some very kind feedback to teachers was much appreciated and gratefully received.

We are excited to welcome children back to campus next week! Rest assured that we are well prepared and looking forward to getting back into the routine.

"Education is the one thing that no one can take away from you."

B.B. King

Today is my birthday. I shall, of course, mark the occasion with a low key, socially distanced, family celebration this year. As I always do, I will think of my parents. The story of my birth, which would always start with the fact that on the day I was born the snowfall in England was the heaviest ever, became increasingly dramatic over the years. I now have a clear picture of my poor father stranded in a telephone box all night, praying. It was too dangerous to drive to the hospital and the snow was so thick that he couldn't open the door of the telephone box. What the exact truth is, I will never know!

One thing I am sure of is that the decisions made by my parents all those years ago contributed enormously to the way my life has turned out. My father was late in life to consider an expatriate posting. He was already in his late forties when he accepted a job with Bahrain Petroleum Company. Altruistic and unmaterialistic through and through, he was very clear in his mind why he chose to uproot the family and move to Bahrain. He did not particularly like hot weather and Bahrain, although magical in many ways, was relatively unsophisticated in 1979. However, Bapco offered an exceptionally good educational package for his three children - education at a boarding school at that.

I still remember the pain of parting at Bahrain airport (2:45 am is a particularly brutal time for any flight to take off!). As a twelve year old, I would have preferred to have stayed in Bahrain with my family rather than flying to the other side of the world for the start of a new term. He was however determined, "But it's a good education - no one can take it away from you."

I was generally happy at the boarding school but I can't pretend it was always easy. In fact there were times when it was exceptionally hard and I was desperately homesick. But, was it worth it? Yes. Absolutely. One hundred per cent.

Is educating children at the BSB hard at the moment? Yes, without a doubt. Online learning is hard for teachers, hard for children and hardest of all for parents. Is it worth it? Yes, without any shadow of a doubt. My father's words come to mind - education is something that cannot be taken away from you.

I thank parents for their continued support during these difficult times as we continue to strive to provide the best possible education for the students. Something that will stay with them all their lives.

I hope you enjoy the photographs from an uplifting and innovative Book Week! An enormous thank you to all who contributed.

"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience but where he stands in times of challenge and controversy."

Martin Luther King Jr.

We are pleased to see that as ever, children in the Infant School are exercising their creativity and industry to ensure that spending a lot of time at home does not become monotonous. As well as live teaching lessons there are optional learning opportunities on the Remote Learning Blog. PHSE lessons on Tuesdays are an example of this. The weekly challenges are linked to assembly themes and we were pleased to receive a record number of submissions this week.

As you can see from the photographs and videos, children at the BSB are doing their bit to 'Commit for Bahrain' and combat COVID-19.

Our remote learning provision continues to evolve and I would urge all parents to check timetables carefully as from next week there are additional 'live' music and drama lessons for all children, as well as significant changes to the Arabic timetable in Reception.

Many thanks to the children who were the 'student voice' in this week's assemblies. If your child would like to present in assembly, please email me directly at infantsheadteacher@thebsbh.com.

Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.

Benjamin Franklin

As we conclude the first half of Term 2, we have certainly recognised the value of flexibility and adaptability. This goes for teachers, assistants, parents and children. Well done to all!

Teaching and learning is a two way process. Although the teacher has a clear learning objective planned at the beginning of each lesson, the way forward is very often led by student response. The power of the student voice is never to be underestimated.

Against the odds, we have yet again tried something new his week. For the first time, a student presented her work in the Year 2 online assembly. Team Arabic were also pleased to be involved and ensure that at least part of the assembly was in Arabic.

For next term, we have planned assemblies on the following themes:

  • Tuesday, 23rd February - Safety in the Time of COVID-19

  • Tuesday, 2nd March - Book Week

  • Tuesday, 9th March - Road Safety

  • Tuesday, 16th March - Safety at Home

If your child would like to share a few sentences, either in English or Arabic, or show something they have made in relation to these themes during the online assembly, please contact Mrs. Nanda directly at nandad@thebsbh.com. All year groups are welcome to have a go. We really look forward to hearing more of the student voice.

Thank you to all parents for completing the parent poll. As we are all aware, these are uncertain times. If you have requested a change in provision, this will come into effect when we are back on campus. We will be in touch to notify you well beforehand.

" A group becomes a team when each member is sure enough of herself and her contribution to praise the skills of others."

Norman Shidler

As we celebrate the successful outcome of the inspection of our provision during exceptional circumstances by the BQA, I am struck by three things.

Firstly, that it is when under pressure that people often show thier authentic selves.

Secondly, that the authentic selves of the members of Team Infants are magnificent. Thirdly, that those who led the gathering of evidence for this particular inspection hit the note perfectly in bringing their teams together. A huge thank you to Ms. Sarah Hayes, Head of Year 2, Curriculum Coodinator, Ms. Saleha Kalang and Head of Arabic, Ms. Haifa Mayouh for their outstanding leadership during the period of inspection.

A very special thank you also has to go to Ms. Devika Nanda, Deputy Head for Key Stage 1 who has worked tirelessly for the last two months and always, always, always has all of our backs. We are confident that the school is in a good place for the upcoming British Schools Overseas inspection which will also include EYFS.

Children have coped remarkably well with the switch to fully remote learning this week. We are determined to keep spirits as bouyant as possible at this time, so on Sunday 7th February, all children in Infants are invited, as part of Children's Mental Health Week, to "Dress to express." When they get dressed for remote school on Sunday they should choose items from their wardrobe that reflect how they are feeling. For example a wig or silly glasses if they are feeling jokey, yellow if they are joyful, maybe a dark colour if they are not on top form.

The children will be given the opportunity to explain why they picked these particular clothes at form time.

We have sent the next parent poll to all parents in Infants. Please ensure that it is filled in and submitted by noon on Sunday so that we can plan for the next half of term. Thank you.

Wishing you a relaxing and enjoyable weekend,

'There is real magic in enthusiasm. It spells the difference between mediocrity and accomplishment.'

Norman Vincent Peale

Spirit Week fired enthusiasm across the Infants this week, energising children and adults alike. A big thank you to teachers, assistants, support staff and children for boosting morale in safe, socially distanced ways! Obstacle courses, spirit week headbands, Nursery's string of smiles and learning to sing S-M-I-L-E to the tune of B-I-N-G-O all proved popular. Children learning remotely enjoyed growth mindset activities, baking, Just Dance and Cosmic Yoga.

At this unusual time, the wellbeing of the school community has very much been at the forefront of our minds. Much thought has gone into finding ways for children to really connect with each other whilst maintaining social distancing. Secret signs, little notes, mirroring, pair work and puppets have all had a part to play. Performing songs and rhymes whilst facing a partner has proved effective. This week saw the launch of the BSB's 'Happiness Hop', the brainchild of BSB parent Ms Muneera Al Obaidli in collaboration with Ms Lydia. I am sure this will bring much joy and laughter to us all in the weeks to come. Watch this space!

We were delighted that children in Infants were able to shine in today's Good Morning Performing and we took the opportunity to wish His Majesty, King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa many happy returns of the day!

As directed by the Ministry of Education, the school campus will remain closed to children for the next three weeks. We are fortunate in that the third week of this period coincides with our scheduled mid term break. I hope that the switch to learning remotely is as seamless as possible for those involved.

Although we have missed our colleagues in Juniors and Seniors on campus for part of this week, we were delighted to be able to increase outdoor learning opportunities for children in Infants in their absence. The glorious weather and the freedom to make the most of the vast astroturfed area has been a huge boost to spirits, as teachers continue to imagine new ways for children to have fun in safe, socially distanced ways.

The positive impact of increased outdoor time has led us to plan Spirit Week for all children in Infants next week. The focus will be on keeping each other cheerful and relaxed, with a positive growth mindset.

Each year group will have their own Spirit Day and the schedule is as follows;

Sunday 24th January- Nursery Spirit Day

Monday 25th January- Reception Spirit Day

Tuesday 26th January- Year 1 Spirit Day

Wednesday 27th January- Year 2 Spirit Day

I do not wish to detract from the powerful element of surprise for the children. At this stage, all they need to know is that they should wear P.E. kit on their allocated Spirit Day!

Children who are learning remotely will also celebrate Spirit Day and I hope the occasion gives us all a reason to share some smiles!

Bahrain Young Performers Virtual Festival

It is with great excitement that we are now able to announce the first ever Virtual Bahrain Young Performers’ Festival, hosted by the British School of Bahrain. As in previous years, the event will be a competitive festival with a variety of opportunities to celebrate the diverse talents of young performers across Bahrain.

Entry to the competition will be by video submission via the online Google Form. The 1st and 2nd Rounds your videos will be judged by international performing artists and teachers with experience in each category and age group. We are pleased to state that the virtual format will make it possible for each entrant to receive a short written critique of their performance from the judges.

The Grand Final will be a live, socially distanced event for participants and their families only. Prizes will be awarded to the winners alongside digital certificates for all those involved.

To promote social distancing and COVID-19 precautions, this year’s competition will involve only individual performances with various categories for singers and instrumentalists, actors, public speakers/poetry recitalists & dancers. We are also delighted to be introducing a Musical Theatre category, especially for those talented stage performances!

Here is a letter with full details of the Bahrain Young Performers Virtual Festival.

" It takes something more than intelligence to act intelligently."

Fydor Dostoevesky

There is no doubt that this past year has been an emotional roller-coaster for many families.

Difficult decisions have had to be made as we have adapted to a new normal and done all we could to keep family members safe. There is much talk of the effects of the pandemic on mental health. Even though not everyone has been infected by COVID-19, everyone has been affected in some way. Developing emotional intelligence for our children is important for their well-being. In order for them to be able to read and understand the feelings of others, they must first be able to interpret their own.

Feelings and emotions were the focus of assemblies and PHSE lessons this week. We were very pleased to receive the children's responses to the challenges set.

We are very grateful to the maintenance and facilities team, the IT team, the cleaning team and the security team who have worked tirelessly over the break to ensure that classrooms were set up with the appropriate safety protocols for the return to campus of classes N3, R6, 1.8, 1.9, 2.7 and 2.8.

I would also like to thank you, the parents, for your support at drop off and pick up time this week as we have had to adapt the logistics to keep the larger cohort of children safe. Nearly all parents have done their utmost to minimise their time on campus, encouraging children to be dropped off independently.

Whilst it is a shame to have to sacrifice many of the conversations, greetings and general passing time of day with other parents that are a part of the fabric of a school community restraint has meant that traffic is flowing smoothly and children leave and enter school in a safe, socially distanced manner.

We have also witnessed some moments of great thoughtfulness - parents who have perhaps a little more free time starting to use the satellite parking to ease congestion and parents who bring a little slip of paper with their child's name on to save time at the Stop and Collect.

There is a general sense that although we would all love to take things a little more slowly, and enjoy conversations with each other at the end of the day, the community is pulling together and doing what needs to be done to keep the children learning and to keep the community safe. Thank you!

Now that there are so many classes learning on campus, it is probably worth reminding families that the resources on the Remote Learning Blog are still available for your use. I strongly recommend that all families continue to use the Remote Learning Library.

The power of reading to our children is never, ever to be underestimated!

Wishing you a relaxing and enjoyable weekend,

"Once a king or queen of Narnia, always a king or queen of Narnia."

C. S. Lewis The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Dear parent,

Team Year 1, comprising of children, parents, teachers and assistants, rose magnificently to the occasion at this morning's Royal Banquet. From the moment the children passed through the temperature gates, and Nurse Suzie and Mrs Guyon curtseyed in their honour, right up until the end of the day, our kings, queens, princesses and princes carried themselves in a truly regal fashion. My sincere thanks to all involved for executing such a lovely idea with aplomb.

There was also much excitement this morning as the first Great Fire of London models arrived on campus. It was good to see children showing off their work enthusiastically and even better hearing them explaining how they had constructed their houses. Bravo Year 2!

Many thanks to parents who filled out the parent poll so promptly. By the end of the day, all parents should have been contacted by their child's class teacher for next term. Our aim has been to minimise change for the children as much as possible.

We look forward to National Day celebrations, Fire, fire performances and festive singalongs next week. It is still not too late to enter the National anthem competition - please see details below.

National Anthem Competition

Last chance to have a go at the Bahrain National Anthem competition.

Click here for more information, or click the image.

The link includes a video from Mrs Carter, taking you through the words of the national anthem, with subtitles showing how to pronounce them. Don't worry if you can't read Arabic, because the words are spelled phonetically for you, and you can play Mrs Carter's recording as many times as you want, until you can remember each line. In the video you can see Xavi in 4.10, and Mr Carter, learning the national anthem together and having great fun.

"Children are the priority, change is the reality, collaboration is the strategy."

Judith Billings

Dear Parent,

It has been a particularly busy week of learning, assessments and preparations for end of term festivities.

In the midst of it all we continue to foster 21st Century learning skills. At this particular time, finding ways to encourage collaboration can be particularly challenging. I congratulate all children who took the time to create a google slide show highlighting the places that are special to them in Bahrain. We had great reports from parents about children working together to create some magnificent pieces of work!

"The way positive reinforcement is carried out is more important than the amount."

B.F. Skinner

Dear Parent,

Positive reinforcement is a wonderful tool used by teachers to encourage children in their learning. This week the tables have turned. Thank you very much to all the children and to the parent ambassadors who contributed to the beautiful 'We Love BSB' video. As we come towards the end of a very long term and teachers are spending their evenings writing reports, this positive reinforcement, in such an uplifting video, was just the tonic needed.

There is plenty to look forward to before the end of term: A Royal Banquet in Year 1, A Great Fire in Year 2 and festive sing-alongs in the Early Years. Invitations are in the post.

"Enthusiasm is the electricity of life"

Gordon Parks

Dear Parent

There have been days over the past few months where it would have been easy for a sense of monotony to sink in. I applaud all members of staff who continue to incorporate as much variety and fun as possible into learning and who consistently model enthusiasm.

The traditional English afternoon tea party in Year 2 today was a wonderful way to inspire enthusiasm for learning to compare and contrast lifestyles in the United Kingdom with those in Bahrain. Many thanks to 'Piece of Cake' and the magnificent Class Links in Year 2 for helping to organise this.

Many thanks to students who responded to this week's assembly on tolerance and the PHSE lesson on similarities and differences. We were impressed by the thought behind your ideas and delighted by some very sophisticated critical thinking!

I hope parents have found the curriculum overviews for this term on the remote learning blog helpful. If you have not come across them, they can be accessed HERE.

"Creativity is intelligence having fun."

Albert Einstein

Dear parent,

Creativity and global citizenship are key 21st Century learning skills. It was fun to see children developing a combination of the two in this week's PHSE challenge. Many thanks to all children who submitted work either by video, photograph, writing or voicenote. The discussion that takes place while the child is completing the task is when real learning happens . The challenges set could even be described as 'talking homework'. It is always a pleasure to receive submissions from children who are learning on campus as well as those who are learning at home. The resources on the remote learning blog are accessible to all and provide ideas and opportunities to enhance learning, even after a day on campus.

It was a pleasure to welcome sixty children who had been learning remotely back to school this week. It was also lovely to see parents reuniting with familiar faces. However, as we continue to do our utmost to keep the community safe, I ask parents to avoid gathering for chats at pick up time. This goes completely against human nature and the spirit of the school community, but , in order to minimize risk, it is important that parents are on campus for as short a period as possible. I commend all children in Key Stage 1 who are dropped at the front of the school in the mornings and now enter the campus independently. This is a huge help to the traffic flow. We are gently encouraging children in Reception to follow suit when they are ready. We salute the handful of three year olds who are already cheerfully waving goodbye at the gate.

" Do anything, but let it produce joy."

Walt Whitman

Dear parent,

Teachers continue to innovate and adapt planning so that learning can be as varied and a much fun as possible for the children, even though practical safety restrictions don't always make things easy.

Year 1's annual STEAM ( Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) week would normally involve classes of children moving through a carousel of classrooms, collaborating in small groups whilst completing investigative challenges. Although it wasn't quite as easy to encourage collaboration on practical tasks this year, staff ensured that real original ideas were encouraged and practical skills honed using a variety of materials for 3D sculpture. A change of teacher, dressed to impress, added variety to the week and contributed to high levels of interest and engagement.

The school environment is increasingly cheerful and it is uplifting to see the pride children are taking in freshly displayed work. In assemblies, we talked about ways of improving our environment to foster a sense of well being. Thank you to all children who submitted tasks on this theme.

As the first half term of the year comes to a close , I thank all children, teachers, assistants, support staff and parents for pulling together to make the very best of this unusual time.

World Food Day 2020

Dear parent,

In assemblies and PHSE lessons over the last few weeks children have explored and showcased ways of developing a sense of wellbeing - something that is needed more than ever at this time. They came up with a magnificent variety of sports, hobbies and pastimes to use time away from the screen effectively. All agreed that exercise made their bodies strong and that they felt happy and relaxed after spending time doing something they enjoyed.

This week we talked about nourishing our bodies with a variety of foods which would also make us feel well. Tomorrow, Friday 16th October, is World Food Day. We considered the concept of Food Heroes, all of whom play a part in getting fresh food to our tables regularly. In the food's journey, 'from farm to fork' there are hundreds of food heroes each playing a part, truck drivers, factory workers, shop assistants, and as many children suggested, mummies! Class 1.1 supported Nasayem Al Bahrain environmental initiative, agreeing, having worked hard at the task, that seed packers were also food heroes. I hope you enjoy the videos and posters of some of BSB's very own food heroes. Many thanks to all children who rose enthusiastically to the challenge .

Think Pink

Next Thursday, 22nd October, children are invited to wear pink clothes or add a touch of pink to their uniforms to celebrate Think Pink Day. Some fabulous art displays have started to go up around the school. Many thanks to all contributors.

Thank you too to all the Class Links who I had the pleasure of meeting this week. Now that the parent poll is complete, up to date class lists will be sent to you next week.

"The wise adapt themselves to circumstances, as water moulds itself to the pitcher. "

Chinese Proverb

Dear parent,

The rhythm of the school routine is now fairly well established and we are pleased with the evidence of real learning. There is however not a second for complacency as we plan for the next half of the term.

Today you will receive the latest parent poll. This gives families the opportunity to decide whether to continue with their child’s present mode of learning, either remote or on campus, or to commit to an alternative for the next block of six weeks. I would urge all parents to PLEASE fill in the poll as soon as possible.

As ever our aim is for children to be safe and happy and to attain the best possible learning outcomes. Should you change your child’s mode of learning for the next block, it is likely that they will have a change of teacher. However, we will try to ensure that children will have some familiar faces in their new group, wherever possible, to ensure a smooth transition.

We were delighted with the online submissions for this week’s PHSE lessons. It was particularly pleasing that work was submitted by both remote and on campus learners. There is no doubt that BSB children know how to make good use of their time when away from the screen. I hope these videos and photographs sow the seeds of some ideas for the half term break!

I have had several queries about the timing of virtual assembly and the Year 2 second language Arabic on the blog. We are doing our best to adjust these after the mid term break.

Helping us all to stay healthy

Just a reminder that anyone feeling unwell in any way should stay at home, away from school, until fully recovered and cleared by school to return. Furthermore, if your child or a member of your household is awaiting a COVID test result because of contact tracing, symptoms etc. then your child should not come to school until cleared to do so - please contact us to check, if you are in any doubt, before sending your child to school. It is through teamwork, with everyone sharing the same goal, that we have the best chance to eventually beat the virus and return to a more normal lifestyle.

"The true creator is necessity, who is the mother of our invention. "

Benjamin Jowett

Dear parent,

Educators across the world have spent months agonising over the ways children's learning or educational experiences would be impacted by the necessary restrictions imposed due to COVID-19. Over the summer break there were far more questions than answers. How would the children cope with being collected from their cars? How could phonics be taught if a mask covered a teacher's mouth while she demonstrated? How on earth would we be able to get young children to focus online?

Thanks to 'necessity being the mother of invention', the creativity of all adults involved, and the resilience of the children, there is a strong feeling this week that real learning is well underway. This is true for remote learners as well as those learning in school. Progress is concrete and measurable and it is a relief to know that the great effort is having the impact we hoped for.

Just as teaching methods continue to evolve, the logistics of running two parallel modes of learning evolve. In a week or so's time, families will have the opportunity to reconsider whether 'remote' or 'on campus' learning is best for their child, given individual circumstances, at this time. You will receive the next parent poll during the week beginning 11th October, so it would be worth taking time to consider the best option for your family now.

This afternoon you will have received an invitation from your child's class teacher to sign up for a parent/teacher meeting via Zoom during the week beginning 18th October.. Teachers are looking forward to feeding back to you on your child's progress.

Mrs Nanda, Ms Clarke and I are very much looking forward to joining classes of remote learners for some class sessions next week.

"The key to success is often the ability to adapt."

Confucius

Dear parent,

Charles Darwin said that it isn't always the strongest or the most intelligent of species that survive, but the ones who are most responsive to change.

The BSB community and the world in general has had to adapt to new ways of living, interacting and learning this year. I was in awe of the way Team Nursery reimagined Pyjama Day and the Teddy Bears' Picnic. Despite so many restrictions, the event was fun, lighthearted and enjoyable for all. Remote classes were comfortable in their pyjamas for the day and children enjoyed a sound hunt, following instructions to make bears out of playdough and a communal online picnic. Furry friends were not allowed in school but huge photographs of each child's teddy in the interactive whiteboard were a novel replacement. The language delivered by the children during show and tell was as good as, if not better than, ever.

The PSHE challenge on 'Following the Rules' this week was a great source of amusement in the classrooms. Seeing Mrs Nanda's antics on the big screen was an almost cinematic experience and it was lovely to hear uninhibited laughter again. The submissions sent to me were of a truly excellent standard - I congratulate the children on their original thought and ingenuity.

"Circumstances are beyond human control, but our conduct is in our own power."

Dear parent,

As ever, the children have adapted to their new timetables with ease, and I am getting great reports from teachers, both remote and on campus, about children's high levels of interest and general enthusiasm for learning. We have introduced some games sessions into the school week on campus and the atmosphere is increasingly light.

Although the school communicates frequently with parents, Class Whatsapp groups, managed by a volunteer parent 'Class Link' are sometimes useful for parents who wish to join. It is the time of year when we are actively trying to recruit Class Links for each class in the Infants. Please read more about the role of the Class Link here, and if you are willing to volunteer, please inform your child's teacher directly by email.

"It's the same, but different!'"

Reception student

Dear parent,

I have lost count of the number of times over the years that I have reassured parents that children often surprise us with their resilience at times of transition and change. However, the speed at which so many of our on campus learners have adapted to new routines and procedures this week has been truly phenomenal!

I congratulate all children, parents, teachers and support staff for pulling together in such a mutually supportive way. I am sure that families of children who are attending campus welcomed the news from Mr Maguire this afternoon that from Sunday 13th September we are able to offer on campus provision five days a week, from Sunday to Thursday. You will receive an email from me tomorrow, outlining what this news means in practical terms for the Infant School.

Teachers of children who have chosen to learn remotely have also reported a smooth start to the year. Online etiquette has been excellent, with children focused and eager to learn. There is relief that levels of attainment are, on the whole, as we would expect, or in some cases higher.

What I was unprepared for this week, were the glimpses of unexpected emotion. The mothers catching each others' eyes in the corridor as the National Anthem was played on the loudspeaker for the first time and the children automatically stood to attention. The bravery of the children in Reception at the 'Drop and go'. Those starts of recognition, as children, a little shyly to start with, recognised each other as they lined up to go through the temperature check. I overheard one little girl summing it up perfectly, "It's the same but different."

It is so good to see that deep connections in the school community are still there and we look forward to a successful year ahead.

Wishing you a healthy and peaceful weekend ahead,

Julie Anne Gilbert
