Lost Paradise of Dilmun Water Park trip - Years 4, 5 and 6 - Sunday 19 June

What an amazing trip we had to Lost Paradise of Dilmun on Sunday. We had a fantastic time and we were delighted to be back at LPoD after not being able to run the trip for two years. The boys and girls of Years 4, 5 and 6 played happily, sensibly and safely in the warm morning sunshine; then we got dried and dressed to return to school before the hottest part of the day.

The water park was spotlessly clean and all the slides and pools were in great shape. We have made some helpful suggestions to LPoD regarding their food service, so next time we can get our delicious lunches served more rapidly.

Many thanks to everyone who made the trip possible. Thanks to Mr Maguire for the super photos.

Year 3 Yabeela Play Park Trip - Sunday 19 June

Year 3 students had their own special trip to Yabeela Play Park at Al Liwan, next door to BSB, on Sunday. I think they are very brave, going on the thrill ride, as you can see in the ten-second video. Thanks to Mr Maguire for the video.

It really is wonderful to be able to have our end-of-year trips as a special treat after all the diligent work and learning that the children have done over the thousand hours of the school year.

Junior Science Fair

Many thanks to Mr Travers and Mr Doyle in Years 5 and 6, and all the teachers in Years 3 and 4, for this week's super-advanced Science Fair presentations. Parents kindly visited to watch their children and classmates share the results of the scientific investigations they have been carrying out in recent weeks. Many of us were surprised by our findings. Science is driven forward by hypotheses being proven false, so have no fear if your results and conclusions were the opposite of what you thought they might be.

Here is a Google photo album of the Science Fair.

Transition Day

There was a real air of excitement across BSB this morning as we all spent the first part of the day in our new year groups for September.

Here you can see Ayaan, a BSB Senior School Prefect (and a past member of the Junior Head Student Team) giving our Year 6 students a talk on life in the Senior School. Ayaan is in Year 9 now. Straight after today's transition meetings, he headed off to travel to the World Scholars Cup event in Dubai this weekend.

It was a pleasure to welcome this year's Y2 students into the junior school, to get a taste of life in Year 3. Now we can all have a happy summer, knowing that there are wonderful things in store for us at BSB in September.

Well done, Atif! The Wimbledon Championships start soon - maybe we shall see Atif win a Wimbledon final in a few years' time.

Miguel 6.06 - Art that is out of this world!

Never underestimate young people. This drawing of an astronaut - which reminds me of the first untethered space walk, carried out 38 years ago by astronaut Bruce McCandless - was created by Miguel in class 6.06.

It is a super piece of work and an inspiration to us all.

Football in Turin with Juventus - Sean 6.09

Report from Mr Drennan

Sean, one of our Year 6 students and the captain of our football squad, traveled last week to Turin, Italy to take part in a Juventus invitational training academy. As well as training alongside some of the best young players in Italy, he was joined by the leading Juventus Academy players from as far afield as the USA and Canada. Sean experienced the lifestyle of a professional footballer as he spent the days at the Juventus training ground under the guidance of top Italian coaches and I am sure that he impressed the coaches with his skill and determination. Sean enjoyed eating lots of pasta and even picked up a few Italian phrases. We wish Sean all the best and, who knows, we may see him playing in Serie A one day... watch this space!

Year 3 trip to Mosaic House

Year 3 students revisited their Roman Humanities topic this week by going on a trip to The Mosaic House! They were very creative, designing their very own Roman style mosaics.

After a short bus trip with their friends they arrived at the Mosaic House and got to choose their own template. Some students chose unicorns, others chose bats and some chose butterflies! There were so many fun templates to choose from. After that, the students were given step by step instructions on how to design their own patterns on their templates using little colourful tiles and glue. After designing very creative mosaics, the students had their lunch outside in the beautiful Mosaic House garden. The Year 3's had so much fun and smiled and laughed all day making mosaics and memories.

Here is the photo album.

Iman in 3.04 said, "I had an incredibly awesome time in Mosaic house. I went on a yellow, gigantic bus. It took 30 minute or so but it was worth it. At first I thought the Mosaic trip was going to be boring but when I reached there I was eager to start because I knew what we were gonna do now. I had to wait for the instruction and then we got to choose these wooden things. I chose a dolphin and I loved my friend one it was amazing. In the end my one looked amazing, wonderful and that is it thank you."

Leen in 3.09 said, "I had such a good time at the Mosaic House. I made a rainbow with all the right colours and used sparkly tiles for the clouds. I thought it was going to be super hard but after the teacher showed me how to put the glue on and stick the tiles down, it was easy peasy. I loved it. I felt like a Roman artist and I want to go back."

Maria in 3.08 said, "I had so much fun. I got to sit next to my friend on the bus and I sat next to her at the Mosaic House."

Honora on 3.10 said, "When I came back and couldn't stop talking about how much fun I had! I was so surprised. I was very happy about the Mosaic House trip and the people working there were so helpful and I made a rainbow! I sat with my friend from my class and we had so much fun!"

Basketball Friendlies Tournament

Jena AlZenji: “The girl's team had great chemistry. We all worked hard for each other and played with a great tempo. I was so excited and proud of the whole team.”

Momin Ghani: “We got off to a great start in the tournament. The first win made us feel as though we were unstoppable! It was an amazing feeling to play on our home court with the support of our friends and parents.”

Junior Boys' Football Tournament

On Wednesday afternoon, the junior boys’ football team led by Mr Drennan and Mr Williams, took part in their final session of the academic year as they hosted Liger Academy for an end of year tournament.

The boys played with great skill and determination and all 3 teams produced some excellent performances and results in the group. Early on, it was clear that there were 2 very strong teams, BSB Blue and Liger Purple, who were both unbeaten.

Check out the video for an amazing piece of goalkeeping by Donnacha.

Here is the photo album

Having already drawn with each other in the group, the final was again an extremely close match with no goals scored during normal time. Extra time followed but the teams were so evenly matched they could not be separated and the final finished 0-0.

After a hard-fought afternoon of football, an honourable draw was a very fair result!

After a slow start to the season due to Covid, the boys have had a brilliant year and should be very proud of themselves. Well done to them all!!

Thanks to all of the parents for their support and a special thank you to our Year 9 referees yesterday - D’Angelo, Noor and Mohammed!

Fantastic Day to round off Maths Week - 9 June

It's Maths Day and we have had a wonderful time. Instead of our usual Thursday timetable, we have taken part in a carousel of mathematical activities, learning, teaching one another and having fun at the same time. We have practised Countdown challenges throughout the week, leading to the day's spectacular finale. Thanks to Mr Smith and Mr Drennan for making Maths Week possible.

Here is a Photo album of Maths Week.

It has been an incredibly mathematical week in the Juniors. During the week, every class in Year 3 to Year 6 has been on a walking trip to Al Liwan Mall to take part in an exciting Maths trail. Working in teams they explored the mall, completing mathematical challenges. They found a wide variety of problems to solve, from calculating the number of tiles used at certain areas to finding hidden angles or patterns of symmetry. Everyone had great fun collaborating to answer the questions and realising that there is a lot of Maths out there in the real world.

Back in school the students have been taking part in a Countdown graffiti challenge each day where they used a variety of calculations to achieve their target number. Here is the online version of the game if you want to try it at home.

Everyone had the chance to estimate the number of sweeties in the jar and many students also uploaded a picture of the longest carrot or lightest potato they had found in the supermarket. Well done to everyone who entered.

On Thursday, the Junior School students came to school wearing numerical clothes and brought Maths Week to a conclusion with an energetic, whole school mathematical treasure hunt. Working in groups they moved around the school, following clues and working together to solve a variety of mathematical challenges. There was a vast range of activities such as estimating volume, programming Lego robots to travel a certain distance and even investigating the ratio of strawberry to other flavours in a packet of Skittles.

Billy, 6.09: “Maths Day was excellent! All of the activities were great fun. It was so nice to go around all of the classrooms.”

Aaryan, 6.09: “It was great fun to go around the different teachers. I loved the Skittles investigation.”

Hridhaan, 6.01: “ Maths Week was an absolute banger of a week! It was fun and we had a great time with all of the mathematical activities. It was the best week of the year!”

Hamza, 6.01: “ Maths Week was way more fun than I expected! I loved all of the practical activities.”

Mishaal, 6.09: “Maths Week was really awesome. We played loads of Maths games and solved a lot of mathematical problems. I loved the 3-D shape activity!”

World Ocean Day.mp4

World Ocean Day - Wednesday 8 June

The BSB Eco-Rangers reminded us yesterday about World Ocean Day. It is vital that we look after the world's oceans, and we can do that even if we spend all our time on dry land. We have to make sure that we do not throw plastic waste into regular dustbins, or leave it lying around. If we do, it will find its way into the oceans, and all living things will suffer, including us.

Reduce the amount of plastic you use. Recycle anything you have to use, in a proper recycling bin that you can trust.

Y4 Viking Seascape Mural

For a moment, as I was walking down the corridor, I thought I was on the North Sea, aboard a Viking longboat. I'd been entranced by the hypnotic seascape mural, made by Year 4 students, in the style of the artist L S Lowry. Following the roaring success of the Viking exhibitions last week, the students and their teachers still found the energy to create this wonderful work of historical art, and to display it proudly for us.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

What a triumph! I was spellbound by the stagecraft of the cast in last night's performance of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It was a truly memorable evening, as the characters came to live, portrayed so ably by talented young actors. If you weren't able to make it to the show, watch this space for the video recording, which will be available soon.

Year 4 Viking Exhibition

What a great week it was, learning lots about life in Viking times. Many thanks to parents who were able to come in to view the exhibition with your children. We understand that it is not easy to find time during the day.

The Year 4 children gained a great deal from the Viking experience, leading their own learning, and teaching one another in the process. By bringing their studies to life in this way, they have made sure they will retain their valuable learning for a long time to come.

National Drawing Day - Monday 16 May

What super art work the children produced, for National Drawing Day, which fell on Monday this week. My thanks to Ms Welland and all the teachers for publicising the event and persuading so many promising young artists to have a go. To develop your artistic skills, the best way to start is to get into the routine of drawing. Events like National Drawing Day are a great prompt to do exactly that. Who knows - you may even surprise yourself. So, pick up a pencil and grab a sheet of cartridge paper, and away you go. Just 362 days to go until National Drawing Day 2023!

Year 5 & 6 Football Team

On Wednesday afternoon, the boys’ U-10 team made the journey to Diyar Al Muharraq to take part in the inaugural ARKS football tournament. Over a long afternoon and evening of football, the boys put on a great display of football and teamwork and became the worthy champions.

BSB 3-1 ARK

BSB got off to a blistering start with 2 quick-fire goals from captain John. ARKS pulled a goal back with a sensational long range free-kick but an equally outstanding free-kick from Viktor sealed the 3 points for BSB

BSB 3-0 Capital School

This match was a very tight, cagey affair with both teams looking to gain a second win of the afternoon. It took a penalty from Viktor to open the scoring, after which BSB took control and finished the match off with strikes from Yassin and a further goal from Viktor.

BSB 4-0 Liger

Looking for a victory to qualify for the semi-final, BSB started the game at a high tempo and a bullet header from John set them on their way. Lewis deservedly got his name on the scoresheet along with Ahmed and a long range strike from Yassin.

Semi Final: BSB 2-0 Liger

Like most semi-finals, this was a tense match and, after a fairly quiet afternoon, goalkeeper Halli was called into action, making some vital saves and interventions. This inspired the team as they raised their level and took the lead with 2 goals in 3 minutes from Lewis and Yassin which allowed them to progress into the final.

Final: BSB 3-0 ARK

In the final, BSB started brightly and looked to impose themselves on the opposition. ARK defended strongly and it took a while for the breakthrough to come. Following a handball in the box, Viktor smashed home the resultant penalty. After taking the lead, the game started to open up and BSB were able to demonstrate their free-flowing football. This quickly led to a second goal from John and Yassin sealed the victory with the third.

All of the players should be extremely proud of themselves, not only the skill which they demonstrated but for the hard work and togetherness which the whole squad showed! Well done, boys!

Haya's Bird Houses

Haya in class 3.06 has a really creative hobby - painting bird houses in bright colours. Haya and her parents very kindly donated some beautifully painted bird houses to BSB. We have placed them proudly in the school's eco garden, where we hope they will soon attract some birds to live in them.

U-Turn Pickup

A note to parents who use the u-turn pick-up at the end of the school day: if you would like to leave your car and collect your child on foot, please make sure your car is parked in a marked space near the far wall, or parked alongside the safety chain, not obstructing the roadway.

If you intend to pick up your child at the u-turn, please notify your child's teacher. Then, we can have your child ready, supervised by staff, at the u-turn area, so there is no need for you to leave your car. Used properly, the area can accommodate many vehicles passing through in a short time. Thank you for your help and cooperation.

Junior Duke Award

Well done, Mahatva in 4.02, on completing your Silver Junior Duke Award. It is a sign that you are an independent young person, able to take responsibility and complete tasks.

Everyone who has enrolled in this year's Junior Duke scheme, please remember to complete your awards soon, so we have time to celebrate your achievement in assembly and on the school blog.

National Drawing Day

15th May is National Drawing Day, an opportunity for all students to put pen to paper and submit to Ms Welland (wellandr@thebsbh.com) to create a BSB showcase.

99.1 Radio BFBS

This week, we were visited by Ms Akylah Rodriguez, host of the Breakfast Show on Radio 99.1 BFBS. Ms Akylah worked with a group of children on a describing activity - they each wore a blindfold and were then given an object to hold. They described the objects without being able to see them, and were invited to guess what object they were holding.

Radio BFBS will be broadcasting the audio descriptions over the coming weeks, starting with 6.10 Molly's description on Monday 9 May.

Head Student Team - Term 3

This week, we said a big 'thank you' to last term's Head Student Team, Lara, Ben, Molly and Efe. Check out the newsflash video to see the handover in action. The new team ran their first assembly this afternoon - well done, and welcome to your roles!
