Up in the mountains

I am sorry to be later than usual posting this week's blog. I'm privileged to be in Piancavallo, Italy today with a group of 35 enthusiastic junior students and six of my colleagues. The weather is perfect - blue skies, snowy slopes, not too cold. The Italian ski instructors are wonderful; the children are making super progress and even I have managed to improve my parallel turns by getting my shoulders pointing in the right direction. The children are demonstrating a very mature level of teamwork, empathy and perseverance. It is truly a pleasure to be in their company throughout the packed daytime and evening schedule of the trip.

The wi-fi is not strong up here in the mountains so I shall not try to post a lot of images this week. A couple of photos from the ski trip appear below.

Please have a wonderful half-term break with your families. See you after half term.

MEUC Swimming Trip

Don't miss the amazing photos from last weekend's Middle East Unity Cup swimming trip, over on the BSB Sports Blog. Thanks to Mrs Hassett for the pictures. Mr Smith has posted the splendid results on the Executive Head's page. You'll see some wonderful, shining medals in the photos.

Years 5 and 6 Sports Day

Today saw everyone in Years 5 and 6 - students and staff - travel to Bahrain Rugby Club for their annual Sports Day. The weather was wonderful and you can find a report, with lots of photos, on the BSB Sports Blog. Ms Gray has the scores; they will be revealed soon. Well done, everyone, for a successful day of physical education. The final sprint and relay races were nail-bitingly exciting. We had to run the boys' sprint final twice because of a stopwatch issue; Ms Gray assures me that the winners of both the boys' sprint finals will be recognised in the medals and accolades, so no-one needs to worry. Thanks to all the parents who came along to support the students; special thanks to everyone who participated in the grown-ups' races.

Year 4 VE Day

Victory in Europe ruled the day in the Year 4 corridor as the children enjoyed the spectacular culmination of their twentieth century history studies over this half of term. The day began with a breathtaking parade of wonderful 1940s costumes. Later, the children had a street party in the corridor, in just the same way that people really did when the second world war in Europe came to an end in 1945. Check out Mr Smith's post on the Executive Head's page.

Awestruck by Science!

The Year 5 & 6 BSB Science Fair took place on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday this week in the Atrium in the Administration building.

In all, 18 classes were involved in this initiative, the culmination of their Science work since the beginning of the year. We were delighted so see so many parents, visitors, students and teachers from other parts of the school who were obviously intrigued to see the results of inquiries into, for example, which potato chips are the greasiest and which brand of paper towel is the most absorbent.

Another popular feature of every class’ presentations was a slide show of photographs which often introduced the investigation and showed excerpts from the students’ activities over the last 5 weeks. So, as well as examining the finished product on storyboards, visitors could watch the development of the investigation from the very beginning.

Very noticeable, too, was the level of enthusiasm and teamwork displayed by the groups and also their scientific knowledge which was regularly tested with some very tricky questions from the audience.

Equally noticeable was the high quality of the storyboards on which each group displayed the major components of their investigation in the form of writing, tables, graphs, photos and diagrams. Many students commented that not only did they enjoy carrying out the investigations but they learned a lot too so well done Year 5 and 6!

“I thought it was great fun to see investigations carried out by other groups and how they showed their results. The amazing thing was we had to do it without any teacher help.” – Rakkan (5.07)

“The best thing was trying to get all of our information and results onto the storyboards. I enjoyed working with my group and we showed a lot of teamwork..” – Haroon (5.06)

“Over the last 5 weeks, my group made very good progress and for me, the best part was explaining our investigation and our results to lots of students and our parents.” – Haroon (5.06)

“We presented our results to a lot of people and they seemed very interested. We were very successful and we wouldn’t have been if we were not a great team too” – Beren (5.02)

“I went to see the Year 5 Science Fair with my class and I thought it was really cool. I liked the experiment with the potato best and the colourful storyboards. Students would ask us questions and if we got them right, we would get a candy!” – Hridhaan (3.09)

Safer Internet Day

On Tuesday we all turned our thoughts to staying safe online. The most important part of online safety for junior children is to make sure our parents know exactly what we are doing online. Young people need their parents' permission before they post any pictures or information, join any chat groups, etc. We all thought about carefully about what consent means in a digital world. Click the word to find out. Also, check out these photos of our safe young internet surfers in action.

PSL Basketball Trials

Parents of children in Years 5 and 6 have all been sent an email message regarding Primary Schools League basketball trials, to be held next week - boys on Tuesday 12 February and girls on Wednesday 13 February, 3pm until 4pm after school. Only students whose parents have signed them up may attend the trials. If you have not yet signed up, here are links to the Google forms: Form for Y5/6 boys (Tue) Form for Y5/6 Girls (Wed)

Science Fair next week - update from Mr Travers

The investigations have been completed, the results have been analysed, conclusions have been drawn and storyboards have been carefully compiled!

Five weeks of planning, experimenting, examining and discussions are now at an end and all 18 classes in Years 5 and 6 are now ready to present their findings to students, parents, teachers and friends. Presentations take place in the atrium in the admin building on Sunday 10th, Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th February.

Middle East Unity Cup Swimming

Ms Gray, Mrs Marshall and a team of eager swimmers set off for Dubai at midday today, to take part in the Middle East Unity Cup competition. It's a spectacular event in a 50 metre pool. I'm sure everyone will swim their very best and surpass themselves - keep a lookout on the sports blog, linked from the top of this page, for updates and results. Wishing the team every success. Whatever the outcome, their indomitable sporting spirit will carry them through.

Mathematics Workshops

Every pupil had the opportunity, during this week, to become a teacher for 45 minutes. Their students were their parents, keen to learn the strategies and methods we teach in school. Mathematics teaching and learning have changed a great deal since I was a student, and they are still changing, as we discover new ways to consolidate understanding and make the subject meaningful to young people. Whatever our age, sometimes we need to try things more than once before we get them right, and we are grateful to our patient 'students' who took time out of their busy schedules to come and support the workshops. As you can see from the photos, family members of all ages attended! Please don't worry about the writing on the tables - the surfaces are designed to wipe clean.

Mr Drennan's Maths Workshop Report

It has been a busy week in the Juniors with the Maths Workshops taking place across the various year groups.

It has been an excellent experience for our students as they presented to the parents some of the mathematical methods they have learned in class. In Years 3 and 4, the focus was on the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract approach across a variety of methods. The students very capably demonstrated the journey to mathematical mastery by using tangible, concrete materials, to pictorial representations, to abstract symbols and problems.

In Years 5 and 6, the emphasis was on real life application of methods. The students expertly guided their parents through some example calculations before helping them to solve real life examples which they had created themselves. It gave everyone a reminder of the importance of maths as we use it in our daily lives.

Thank you to all the parents who attended and were extremely supportive of our students as they presented.

World School Games in Dubai

Yesterday afternoon, we waved off the World School Games Squad, led by Ms Gray, Mr Brennan, Mrs Rule and Mr Rule, as they set off for Dubai, smiling broadly and determined to do their very best. Click here for some amazing photos sent to us today by Mrs Hassett. We wish Team BSB every success and we know they will maintain a spirit of sportsmanship and endeavour throughout this memorable event.

Safer Internet Day - Message from Mrs Rule

Safer Internet Day is celebrated globally in February each year in over a hundred countries to promote the safe and positive use of digital technology for children and young people. The day offers the opportunity to highlight positive uses of technology and to explore the role we all play in helping to create a better and safer online community. It is also a fantastic opportunity to reflect as a family about how you can use the internet and technology safely and responsibly; we can all play a role in empowering children to enjoy their time online! The theme of Safer Internet Day 2019 is consent and the way that we give, ask and receive consent in an online context. Please explore the following links to find out more and get involved:

Upcoming Y5/6 Science Fair: 10-12 February - Report from Mr Travers

Final preparations are well under way for this year’s Upper Junior Science Fair which will take place on Sunday 10th , Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th February. This event will involve Years 5 and 6. (Years 3 and 4 will have their Science Fair in May)

Intriguing investigations include finding out which flavour of chip (or crisp) is the greasiest; which flavour of soda produces the most gas when it reacts with Mentos and which material makes the best parachute. Students in each class have been carrying out their investigations in groups of 3 to 5 and will present their results – with many visual aids – in the atrium in the administration building.

Year 4 Visits to the Military Museum and Fort, Riffa

Year 4 boosted their historical skills this week with a combined visit to the Military Museum and Fort at Riffa. Both sites are rich sources of information and learning. Mr Humphreys snapped these photos of Class 4.05 enjoying their morning out of school. Educational visits are memorable experiences that bring learning to life for children. As well as academic learning, trips bring a valuable sense of independence to young people. Many thanks to all parents who recognise the value of school trips, and support us in running them.

Primary Schools League Athletics Competition

Well done to our Primary Schools League and World School Games athletics team, who achieved second place in the PSL competition held at St Christopher's School on Monday this week. Check out the super photos on the sports blog.

Maths Workshops next week: Years 3, 4, 5 and 6

Several Maths Workshops will be taking place next week. Year 3 will have their Maths Workshop on Sunday 27 January; Year 4 will have theirs on Wednesday 30 January. Year 5 and 6 Maths Workshops are at various times during the week; details have been emailed to Year 5 and 6 parents. Please check spam folders in case an email has been caught there. During each workshop, children will explain and demonstrate mathematical methods they have learned. There is no better way of consolidating your understanding than by teaching someone else. At the workshops, the children are the teachers, and the parents are the students! All the methods and strategies being demonstrated are equally valuable and essential to an all-round understanding of Mathematics.

Smiles despite the dusty weather

The children were very cheerful and sensible during today's dusty weather, smiling as ever, with no complaints about missing their outdoor playtime as we all stayed inside. We had to cancel this afternoon's planned assembly because dust had come into the sports hall, our largest enclosed space, through its ventilation ducts. Our janitorial staff will soon get to work and clear up the dust. Class 4.09, who were due to perform at today's assembly, will get their chance next Thursday, all being well. Class 4.10 will also perform as planned, so we have two super shows to look forward to. Let's hope for clearer weather and a return to sunny normality next week.

Uniform

I would like to congratulate all students, and their parents, on the many examples of smart, tidy uniform I see around school each day. Unfortunately, I also see a few non-uniform hoodies and jogging tops in the cooler weather; these need to be replaced by proper uniform items, please. Shoes also should follow the BSB uniform guidelines, which you can find in the Parent Handbook (pages 33-34 for juniors) on the BSB website. Smart and tidy uniform leads to smart and tidy minds. It also gives us a great sense of belonging and pride. Boys, please don't forget to tie up your ties properly, so the knot touches your shirt collar button.

PCC Coffee Morning for New Parents

Many families have joined the BSB community this term. The Parent Community Committee has organised a coffee morning, from 8:00am until 10:00am on Sunday 20 January, in the school atrium, just inside the front doors, where we can all get to know one another. I hope to be there between 9:00am and 9:30am between my classes. Hoping to see as many new parents there as possible.

Co-curricular Clubs

This term's club season begins on Sunday 20 January and runs until Thursday 4 April. 677 club places have been filled and we are all looking forward to making a start. Please remember that a club is a weekly commitment and we want to see all members at each session of their club.

Girls' Football Squads

The girls played very well on Monday in a series of friendly games with Tekkers at Bahrain Rugby Football Club - don't miss the full report on the sports website.

Happy New Year!

With the successes, trials and achievements of term 1 behind us, we have returned, refreshed and recharged, from our winter holidays, launching ourselves with gusto into term 2. A week of term now lies behind us and everyone is back into their stride. We are delighted to welcome a number of new students and their families - keep an eye open for an invitation to a coffee morning for new parents coming up soon, tentatively scheduled for 20 January, hosted by our wonderful and ever-helpful Parent Community Committee.

Clubs

Term 2 clubs are available to preview, throughout the weekend, via the portal at mis.thebsbh.com. If you have misplaced your login details, please contact the Data Officer via bsbmail@thebsbh.com for assistance. Clubs will be open for online sign-up from 8:00am on Sunday 13 January. On Sunday, it will be possible to join up to a maximum of 2 after-school clubs. If your child has been placed in an invitation-only club, that counts as one of the two. On Monday 14 January, subject to availability, it will be possible to sign up for a third after-school club, then (if any places remain) a fourth on Tuesday and a fifth on Wednesday. Clubs begin on Sunday 20 January and run until Thursday 4 April.

Head Student Team

At this afternoon's assembly, after a splendid musical performance by many of our junior instrumentalists and vocalists, last term's highly accomplished Head Student Team handed over their badges of office to the incoming holders. I would like to say a huge thank-you to Ryle, Heidi, Ayaan and Moya for their tireless, unstinting support, industry, cheerfulness and originality during the very important first term when so many routines are established. Each of the four has made their mark in the form of new initiatives, and selfless charitable work, leading our 978-strong junior school from last autumn into 2019. The mantle is now taken up by Head Girl Sophia, Head Boy Yahya, Deputy Head Boy Zayan and Deputy Head Girl Leyan, who will guide and lead us all until April.

World School Games

This morning, the World School Games swimming squad carved their way through a total of over 20km of water by doing laps of the pool in relays. This afternoon, the children ran laps of the school's inner perimeter - a distance of 550m per lap - to increase their stamina even further.
