Seniors Term 1 - 2020/21

Thursday 10th December

Showcasing Talent

As we draw towards the end of what has been a very challenging term, I share with you some further BSB talent in the form of Alessandro Erbi in Year 9. He is an incredible guitarist and this is just one of many videos he has created to showcase his talents.

The second video explains our BSB National Anthem competition as part of the Bahrain National Day activities. I am very excited to see the entries from our students.

Our options information is now available for both Year 9 and 11 students and can be accessed on this blog using the seniors menu at the top of this page. Staff have created information videos on the option process and shared advice and tips, as well as all subjects being presented via a video presentation. Please take the time to go through these important videos before making your options choices. We encourage you to make contact with the team if you have any queries or would like to discuss your current thoughts further.

Year 11 students are coming to the end of their mock examinations, which have been their first formal experience following the school closure back in the Summer for their Year 10 examinations. I hope that all students have found the process useful, and I urge them to remember that the process is more important than the actual results at this stage. The main purpose of these is for teachers and students to work together to identify areas of strength and weakness, in order to refine revision plans to ensure maximum success come the Summer.

With just a few days to go and a whole host of events and activities, I remind all students to remain focused and vigilant, and not allow their standards to drop in these final few days.

Wishing all families a safe and restful weekend.

Innovation & Entrepreneurship

Year 11 student Isa Haji has been busy giving back to the Bahrain business community. His valuable time spent as a digital leader inspired him to set up his website kulsha.com, a one stop platform to find a range of businesses. Since his successful launch, Isa has attracted media attention and will soon feature in the press. We are all very proud of Isa for his innovative creation and hope our community will support him and local businesses by visiting the site and taking in all it has to offer.

Historical Debates

In teams of 2-3, Year 12 History students embodied the most notable leaders of the USSR including Lenin, Stalin, Khrushchev, and Brezhnev. The topic of the debate was "who was the most successful leader of the USSR?" Students interpreted success in their own way, some arguing that maintenance of power at any cost was a sign of success (even if millions were killed or imprisoned in consequence). Being able to speak from a first person perspective allowed the students to demonstrate their knowledge of how that historical figure would act and respond to others, especially the criticism of others. The students had to use their content knowledge to give detailed reasons in their argument. Weak reasoning was torn down by other groups. The banter in conversation was fun to hear and the controversial opinions raised were true to the nature of historical debate: it doesn't matter what you argue so long as you can justify yourself.

A Level Psychology

Year 12 students have been learning about attachment. Here is a selection of student works.

Beyond BSB Brochure - November 2020.pdf

Beyond BSB

Since the launch of the programme, the initial elements have gone from strength to strength. So far, students have enjoyed lectures in the fields of astronomy, physiology, engineering, psycholinguistics and decision making, and have been treated to a bonus lecture from two UK engineers. Next week will see another bonus lecture on sociolinguistics and the weekly slot occupied by Islamic culture. We have a range of exciting lectures prepared for next term, including guest sessions from University lecturers and experts in various fields, to compliment the topics delivered by our passionate staff. Topics to look forward to include the art of negotiation, modernist literature, sustainable energy, environmental science, ethics, technology in modern sport and many more.

Furthermore, the thought of an independent study project has been so well received that we have had a significant number of students commit to starting their project as an EPQ project, which is testament to the positive attitude of our student body.

As we continue our search for guest lecturers in a range of areas of expertise, I invite any parent who may be interested in sharing their own expertise from their profession to contact me to arrange an informal discussion.

Wishing all families a safe and restful weekend.

The Monthly

Greetings to all parents, students and members of the BSB community,

During the past two months, The Monthly has been setting itself up and organising teams ranging from Year 10 to Year 13. Our extremely diverse range of students hold expertise in journalism, interviewing, researching, advice, media, design, photography and talent. Through working with our team and the BSB community, the editorial team has been able to bring to you a student led newspaper for the first time in 4 years, ranging from current affairs to Netflix recommendations. It is our pleasure to announce the publication of our first ever monthly issue, on the theme of Defending Democracy. After working on this for quite some time now, we hope you find this as stimulating of a read as we do, and continue to follow us on our journey of bringing high quality journalism to BSB as we progress into the school year and grow.

Hoping you are safe and healthy this holiday season,

Editor-in-Chiefs

Odd Sock Day

Today was 'odd sock day' in support of anti-bullying week. As a school, we are fully supportive of the initiative to raise awareness of bullying and the impact that it can have on a young person. We are an inclusive community with responsibility and individuality at the heart of our core values and we try to embed them into everything we do. We celebrate diversity and challenge all students to gain an understanding of all perspectives whilst emphasising their own perspective and feeling confident to share it. We also hold students to account on all that they do, academic or social. These core values help us to ensure that no one tolerates bullying in any way and speak up to eradicate it. We are very proud of our student body for standing with us today.

I wish all families a safe and enjoyable weekend.

Think Pink / Movember

Today has seen the school awash with blue and pink in support of the annual think pink and Movember combined charity drive. Students turned out in force to support the cause and we are most grateful for the donations received to such worthy charities. Even in such difficult circumstances, the BSB spirit shone through as virtual events and activities garnered full support of the student body.

I wish all families a safe and enjoyable weekend.

The future of Formula 1? Lewis Smith

The FIA KARTING world championship is the highest level of karting in the world, with the best drivers in the world including multiple world champions competing using the high power OK engines. Lewis has represented the Kingdom of Bahrain, Bahrain Airport Services and the PRAGA team in this race weekend, showing nothing but high level of driving skill and commitment to improve.

This was Lewis first time racing in this level of international race, he immediately showed high potential and matching times of much experienced drivers and team mates who been racing this class and equipment for years. This was acknowledged by the PRAGA team manager Cash Van Belle, “ Lewis is a fast learner and have the right tools and foundation skills. It is a pleasure working with a young professional racer”.

To make things more challenging, the weekend had difficult weather conditions where it meant he had to deal with rain and wet track, being his first time racing with rain tires, Lewis took a very steep learning curve in the course of 3 days to improve every session, and with the help of the experienced PRAGA team he managed to grasp all the inputs given to him to improve every lap and every session, where he finished the second qualifying race in 15th position out 30 drivers.

Lewis is ranked the 54th best driver in the world. This is a very high achievement for himself and the Kingdom of Bahrain and as his manager and his coach from first day in professional karting, I’m very proud of what he achieved so far, and I’m confident we can achieve much more together in the future.

Beyond BSB

It has been wonderful to welcome our students back to the campus this week, including some new faces after the latest parent survey. It has been a very busy week with the launch of 'Beyond BSB". The virtual lectures will run every Tuesday from 3:30-4pm, offering a wide range of topics and subjects that will engage, capture curiosity and stimulate interest in our oldest students. Mr Garwe took on the responsibility of the first lecture, and introduction to astronomy. Such was the enthusiasm and excitement generated, he will be offering a follow up lecture on Sunday 8th November, 3:30-4pm. Students may sign up and hear more about stellar evolution. Tuesday 10th will see Dr AlJourani give a lecture on engineering, entitled 'Engineers don't sit back and watch, they make things happen'.

For our Key Stage 3 students, our 6th form students have been offering technology support sessions to provide instructions and tips to support students in making the most of technology and the platforms we use. Student led enrichment is such a powerful tool to raise standards in so many ways for all students involved, including the student teachers. Stay tuned for more information on next week's topic.

There have been some fantastic debates happening in English, virtual sketchbooks created in Art, and a wonderful Halloween poem shared by Fatima AlQattan. This week also saw the first of our Head Teachers Commendations awarded. Congratulations to all deserving students.

I wish all families a safe and enjoyable weekend.

Best wishes for the mid term break

As the half term reached its abrupt conclusion, the calm and supportive response to the situation from all of our community was truly impressive. Throughout this first half term the health and safety of all members of the community has been our number one priority, which has been highly successful. We have welcomed nearly 800 students to the senior school campus over the last 8 weeks in order to continue with their education face to face with their teachers, whilst also providing live access to those wishing to remain at home. Our staff and students have worked tirelessly to make the best of the difficult circumstances and this page is testament to that hard work as some amazing outcomes have been achieved. From the first day to the last, every member of this wonderful community has so much to reflect upon and be proud of. We now have a well deserved week to rest, recover and recharge ready to start all over again.

I will be in touch over the coming days with details of our blended provision for next half term

I wish all families a safe and enjoyable break.

Lockdown

Head Prefect Reflections - Leenah Asim, Deputy Head Girl

Being back at BSB for the past half term has been a blessing in disguise after being cooped up indoors for the past seven months. When we first heard that we’d be back in school we all had an abundance of questions which BSB answered with their extensive handbook that helped us and our parents feel safer when sending us to school. Although being back has been different, it has been an experience nonetheless. Our teachers have worked relentlessly to create interactive and interesting lessons whilst following correct COVID protocols. Our blended learning mode has helped limit the traffic in the school halls and has provided us with the ability to choose based on personal circumstances. We, the student leadership team, tried to work with what we had to bring back school traditions. With committees, the virtual school newspaper and planning safe activities for pink day, we hope to have improved our fellow students' experiences, even by the slightest. It feels surreal to be going to school in such a climate but we are grateful that we get to.

Weekly Enrichment Series

Coming shortly, we will be offering a series of virtual enrichment lectures for our 6th form students on a range of exciting and interesting topics, as chosen by them!

Topics such as: psychology, law, astronomy, literature and architecture and more, plus vital skills to prepare for university life will be delivered to enhance interest and knowledge. This series will be short and sharp - an introduction to topics to stimulate thought and discussion, with an opportunity to submit further questions. Lectures will also be recorded and stored for students to access at a later date.

I will write to all 6th form students and parents soon with a schedule.

We are supplementing this with a parallel series for younger students on a Wednesday, second break. The focus initially is on digital skills. Session 1 focused on using google calendar to manage time and zoom links. Session two planned to look at google drive and organisation of files and folders. This session will now be delivered after the half term break by our 6th form student digital support team.

The Monthly - Student Led News

Coming son! The 6th form head prefect team have been busy selecting their team to lead on all aspects of student news and will be going live soon with a publication that, in their own words, "will be solely to provide students with relevant news, information and give them a platform to voice suggestions and also show off their talents."

Good Morning Performing

A selection of images from the recent good morning performing live streams. Congratulations to all students who have recently performed and I cannot wait for the next installment after the half term break.

Year 13 Parent Meetings

Our academic calendar has assigned next week for Y13 parents to meet with teachers. We would like to invite you to schedule an appointment with your son/daughter's teachers to discuss their progress in their subjects since the beginning of term.

In order to accommodate virtual appointments, we will use Google Sheets for you to make bookings with teachers. If you find this process overly complex, please ask your son or daughter to make your booking for you on the sheet.

Please click here to view the schedule. Choose the relevant day of the week from the tabs on the bottom. You can find the relevant teacher in the first column of each tab and reference the available time slot for appointments, marked at the top of the screen.

Please follow the steps in this document to confirm the booking on the sheet.

As a next step, teachers will schedule an appointment with you via Zoom.

If you need to cancel your appointment for any reason, please send an email to the teacher out of courtesy to advise them that you will be unable to attend.

Science Department Inter House Competition

October 4th – October 10th was World Space Week. World Space Week is the largest annual space event in the world. The week helps build up the workforce of tomorrow by inspiring students; demonstrates visible public support for the space programme; educates the public about space activities; and fosters international cooperation in space outreach and education.

Each year a theme is selected by the World Space Week Association Board of Directors in close coordination with the UN Office of Outer Space Affairs. The theme provides broad guidance to World Space Week participants on the content of their programmes. The theme is selected to increase the impact of World Space Week on all humanity further, by using a uniform theme globally. 2020 World Space Week was dedicated to satellites and their broad benefits under the theme “Satellites improve life.” With this theme, the World Space Week showed the importance of satellites in daily life and how our lives are affected by satellites such as in communications, environmental monitoring, transportation, weather forecasting, telemedicine, science, and in many other ways.

The competition at BSB was for students to design a satellite. Their brief was to explain the purpose of their satellite and to show how their design was decided on by linking it to the specific function of the satellite.

Congratulations to:

PE Update

PE lessons have now taken on a more competitive nature. Students are using the skills and knowledge of the game to play competitive matches in lessons. We have seen some outstanding performances so far from all year groups. Alex Doig and Sarah Hasan have stood out winning the 7G competition whereas Owen Alkhatib and Ahmed Hasan were victorious in the 9AB competition so far this week. We look forward to seeing some more winners over the next few weeks. Our online learners have also been busy completing their PE booklets and we look forward to reviewing these next week.

Upcoming Events: School Calendar

At the top of this page you can see our linked parent calendar for seniors. All upcoming events are viewable here in addition to various reminders and information that will be shared by the staff leading on different activities. Next up is our Year 13 parent appointments week, from 18-22 October, which will run differently to previous years. To provide maximum flexibility for you to speak to teachers at your own convenience, we will shortly be sharing an appointment sheet with all parents of Year 13. You will see a full school week of slots that are available for each teacher and have edit rights to book in your chosen time with the teacher. This document will also include relevant links to access the video conferences with each teacher. We hope that this will give you the access you need with teachers to receive feedback and maximise the three way relationship between teachers, parents and students to achieve the best possible results in their studies. Mr White will be writing to parents next week with further information and guidance to support this process. Year 11 meetings will take place from 8-12 November, with the same guidance being released in advance of those appointments.

Equipment: Headphones

An additional item that students should bring to school as part of their equipment is headphones. This prepares them for Arabic/MFL/Islam/RE lessons, where it is taught remotely to KS3 students from their form classes. It also prepares students in case there are any teacher absences that require them to connect virtually.

Tuesdays

Starting next week, ALL senior school students who have opted for blended learning are welcome to attend school all 5 days of the week. We look forward to welcoming those students who wish to be on campus every day.

Social Distancing

Whilst we are delighted with our on campus provision and the discipline of our students and staff in following the guidance to keep us all safe, I have been made aware of some potential issues outside of the school campus. I respectfully remind all parents of the need for our students to protect themselves and others outside of school, by maintaining social distancing, avoiding large gatherings and avoiding sharing food and drinks. This will help to keep all of us safe and we are most grateful for your support in reinforcing this message home.

Thursday 1st October

It was highly enjoyable to see the efforts gone to by our students during last weeks election process for the student council form representatives. The next stage has gone ahead this week, with the elected students campaigning to become the representative of their year group. These individuals will sit on the student council meetings and filter the thoughts and ideas of their peers to the Head prefect team. These results will be announced next week.

Simultaneously, Year 9 students were given the opportunity to express their interest in becoming Head Prefects for the middle school (Years 7-9), which provides a further opportunity to gain leadership experience, share their own and others' feedback and ideas, as well as work closely with the Head Prefects and student council. The whole process was carried out by the Head Prefects, interviewing the candidates both in person and virtually, discussing and selecting the final positions. I am absolutely delighted to announce the new team:

Middle School Head Girl: Alexandria Baillie

Middle School Head Boy: Ali Al Haddad

Deputy: Danish Khan

Deputy: Natasha Rashid

Middle School Ambassador: Hana Kadir

Middle School Ambassador: Alexander Mackenzie-Ross

I wish the middle school leadership team, form representatives and student council all the very best for this upcoming year, which will continue to provide challenges that they will be actively involved in solving with us.

I wish all families a safe and pleasant weekend.

Form Rep Elections 20/21

Corridors come to life

The Art department have been busy decorating the corridors with the outstanding work of the students over the last few months. It is a lovely walk through the department to take in the work on display. Stand by for a virtual sketch book of work coming soon.

Thursday 24th September

This week has seen a big focus on student voice. Every student in Year 7-11 has been given an opportunity to campaign to become "Form Representative" for their class on the student council. During PSHE lessons, students shared their ideas in order to gain enough votes to earn the right to represent the class.

Student voice is a valuable aspect of our provision that has been so successful in the 6th form, where the head prefect team have overseen a number of initiatives and activities based on their own and their peers' ideas. The form reps are vital in this process as they represent the ideas of their class to make the school even better for all students. Below you can see an example of one such presentation by Nirvan D'Souza.

The results of the vote will be announced on Sunday at 12:30pm.

Please read the important letter from Mr Maguire regarding online safety.

I wish all families a safe and pleasant weekend.

Pickup Times

The republished Campus Reopening Handbook has addressed some important changes to the end of day timings for senior school, to take effect from Sunday 27th.

    • 2pm - bus students and students with siblings in infants - senior student should collect their sibling from infants

    • 3pm - students with siblings in juniors - senior student should collect their sibling from their juniors classroom

    • 3:15pm - Years 7-13

Health Reminders for students

  • Ensure you take breaks throughout the day to stand up, stretch your legs and rest your eyes (with teacher permission of course if in school)

  • Exercise regularly

  • Drink plenty of water and eat a balanced diet

  • If you are finding anything difficult, TALK. Find someone you trust and share your concerns. You will be amazed how many people feel the same as you

  • Limit your social contact outside of school to your own bubble and AVOID large social gatherings

  • Limit your screen time in evenings and at weekends - your eyes need a break too

I hope that everyone will continue to do their part to keep themselves and the rest of our community safe.

Year 11

I am delighted to announce that, from next week, Year 11 blended learning students are welcome to attend school on a Tuesday.

If any remote learning students and their parents decide they would like to change their option to blended learning, they should contact pa2seniors@thebsbh.com. They will be added to the waiting list and informed when a space becomes safely available.

Year 8 freeze frames and thought tracking in Drama this week

Thursday 17th September

As week 2 of blended learning comes to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you. Thank you to our parents for their overwhelming positive feedback and suggestions to help us develop further, thank you to our incredible staff for their tireless efforts to keep the whole community safe whilst also delivering a world class education, and thank you to the students. It is as if they never left. They are demonstrating confidence, knowledge, inquiry and an insatiable love of learning that is shining through in every lesson that I have had the pleasure to see.

Those students working remotely should also be proud of their contributions to lessons. I have seen drama scripts being rehearsed collaboratively, art work being projected and discussed, literature texts being read aloud, science experiments being contributed to as well as public speaking activities taking place both in class and online.

Walking down the corridors brings a real sense of pride as I hear the sounds of different language being taught and spoken, see the joy of learning in every room and feel the warmth of the BSB community once more united.

How to: Google Calendar Events

Here is a useful guide that has been shared with all students to help them organise and manage their zoom links for lessons. Form tutors will support students next week if they need some additional guidance with this. Students at home or in school can organise their day with google calendar, which can be opened on a web browser or device app.

Information for parents

  • Water: Please make sure your child has enough water to last the day. Dehydration will make it difficult for students to concentrate, and can lead to headaches or fatigue.

  • Blended learning: If you wish to switch your child to blended learning, please email pa2seniors@thebsbh.com to request this. A weekly review takes place to offer additional spaces on a first come, first served basis.

  • Timetables: Using their BSB email address, students can access a pdf version of their latest timetable here. This displays the new rooms being used. The following is also important to note:

          • Arabic/MFL/Islamic Studies/RE - these lessons, for Years 7 to 9 only, now appear on the timetable as a lesson called "language". The teacher name may be different to their actual teacher. This is so that your child can be safely registered in the physical room they are in, whilst connecting virtually to their actual teacher.

Thursday 10th September

It has been absolutely wonderful to welcome our students back to the campus this week. There has been a real buzz of excitement, passion and enthusiasm as everyone adjusted to the protocols in place to keep us all safe. The positivity of students and staff has been a joy to watch and it has been so enjoyable seeing staff and students after such a long absence. The interactions between students and staff have reiterated the strong BSB community ethos, where everyone has been so pleased to see each other and have been supportive and caring towards each other. A truly great start to the academic year and our blended learning programme.
