Scarlett Pourmatin - Track & Field

When I started at Birchmount, my goal was to make it to OFSAA. With the training and support I received from BEAP and the track coaches, I achieved that goal in Grade 9 for two events -- 80 and 300 metre hurdles!

Being a part of BEAP has helped me grow as an athlete, both mentally and physically, and it has taught me that success doesn’t come easy, it takes hard work. I’ve also become more aware of how important weight training and stretching is, and how to eat the right foods to fuel my workouts.

Getting to OFSAA was an amazing experience. I was training every day and I would always feel very accomplished after meets as I moved closer to my goal. Even after breaking my nose from practising hurdles, a week and a half before the OFSAA qualifier, that still didn't stop me from making it. I think this is something BEAP taught me, perseverance and to never stop when things get hard, even when there are obstacles in your way.

In the future, I want to improve my technique on the track, and keep up my healthy lifestyle. I hope to study kinesiology at university, and become a sports doctor. BEAP has made me a more well-rounded athlete and I'm so thankful for the close friendships I've made with the BEAP teachers and friends, who are so supportive. BEAP has truly made my high school experience amazing and it will impact the rest of my life.
