Krystine Sora 2010 - 2014

I entered high school as a power tumbler, and a track and field runner, but it had never really crossed my mind to attain an athletic scholarship until I started BEAP.  The first time I had decided that a scholarship was my goal, was through the mentorship program that BEAP provides, and while getting to know my mentor, she told me all about scholarships, NCAA and all of the possibilities that can come with it. The following year, we were assigned a project to make a paper resume and a video resume. The BEAP teachers guided us in formatting, and what should be encompassed. When the time came to apply for universities, I was ready, because all I had to do was make some corrections and updates, which made the process a lot easier and smoother. The third main thing that BEAP did to help me reach my goal (but definitely not the last thing) was the workouts. I was able to experience all types of different workouts, and use new equipment, but more importantly, I learned the proper techniques and the significance of everything we did. While I was pushed to my limits physically, I was also pushed mentally. BEAP kept me on my toes, and ensured I was ready for anything that was thrown my way.

Since graduating from Birchmount, I accomplished my goal and was able to attain an athletic and academic scholarship at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in Florida. I made the Dean’s honours list all four years, was an All-American Academic, and graduated with high distinction under the Alpha Chi honours society, which is awarded to the students in the top 5%. In terms of track and field, I broke our school record in the heptathlon and pole vault, was conference champ in pole vault, and awarded CoSIDA All-District and All Region track and field athlete every year. While none of this came with ease, BEAP definitely played a role, and helped set up a strong foundation for all of this to be possible.  BEAP not only helped me to realize my dream, but also provided me with the materials and opportunities to make it possible. My time at NSU was like no other, and unforgettable, and I definitely have BEAP to thank for that.
