The Red Bellied Woodpecker is one of my favorite birds to see in the Kingwood area. The habits and ways that it obtains and stores food is very intelligent.
Apart from their drilling beak, their tongue can extend out to two inches to reach insects deep in crevices. Additionally, they store seeds and other food sources in crevices that they create or find themselves.
This Woodpecker has been seen flying around erratically in a very unmethodical manner. This is thought to be practice of evasive maneuvers that the may one day need escaping from predators.
