Artist Statement: For these three pieces the focus was mainly on filling in or utilizing negative space to create an outline of a shape, such as the leaves, hands, and the fox. A zentangle was used to show the silhouette of the fox, thick lines showed the outline of the three hands, and the front of a building outlined the leaves.

The materials used to create all of these pieces were graphite, a. gel pen, and a fine-tipped marker on drawing paper for the zentangle and negative space hands while the negative space leaves were on bristol paper.

When creating the zentangle strip I wanted to use some sort of silhouette instead of just doing a line for the designs. This lead me to browse google in search of animal silhouettes and then to a fox silhouette that I decided to use as a reference image. As for the patterns I used I just started with half circles and went from there with no real plan on how I wanted it to look. There was not much process behind the negative space hands, I just put my hands into different positions and created a rough outline. Not a lot of thought was put into the piece. When it came to the negative space leaves, this is what had the longest process. I wanted to practice drawing buildings and was originally going to fill the space with a birds-eye view of the city before I realized that would just look weird. Instead, I started looking for buildings with an interesting front entrance, which led me to apartments and then to my reference photo. I had been wanting to try out the hatching technique for a while now so I decided this was a good piece to start with, leading to the space being filled with only lines and no color.
