Extended Drawing

Oil pastel, watercolor, sharpie, Artsmith illustration markers, on watercolor paper

For this assignment, we had to take our blind contours and extent them into something abstract. I had few ideas on how to develop the piece so I went with what was originally created, a hand and two faces tied together by simple strings, almost like a puppeteer playing with two different emotions.

The piece was made using oil pastels to start, then a layer of watercolor with shading from artsmith illustration markers and a sharpie. All of this was done on a piece of watercolor paper.

It took quite a bit of time to decide where I was going to go with this piece. Originally I was going to make it be some yarn that a cat was playing with, but then the faces became noticeable. That was when I decided I was going to go with what was originally being drawn. I noticed how one face looked peaceful and the other sorrowful, so to fill the background I played with colors and patterns until I found ones that I thought fit the emotions well. That's how I ended up with the final product.
