Sgraffito Tile

For this project, we had to create a 50-50 black and white design, transfer it to our under-glazed leather hard slab/tile, and then use a carving tool to carve the underglaze to create your design. The main idea that guided my artwork was

The materials I used for this artwork were dark green underglaze, a carving tool, and a rectangular leather hard clay slab. I first rolled out my slab and put it aside so it hardened, while I waited for it to dry I came up with a design and an underglaze. I was originally going to choose the avocado underglaze but I found out that It was going to turn brown after it was fired so I switched to a dark green since it matched my design more. Once the slab dried out I applied the underglaze 3 times and started to cave away.

For the design, I didn't necessarily have a design In mind so I scrolled online and came across a frog I enjoyed drawing my design and transferring it to the slab, It was a bit hard to carve the spiral, and the tiny lines because they were so small and I didn't have a caving tool thin enough to get in between those tight lines
