Scratchboard

Artist Statement

The main idea that guided my artwork was creating a scratchboard piece based on a real photo. Scratchboard is cardboard with a blackened surface that can be scratched or scraped off for making white line drawings. For my artwork, I used a photo of my cat as a reference photo. I used simple scratch lines to try to mimic the high and lowlights of the photo.

For this artwork I used 8 by 11 inch scratchboard paper and and scratching tools I had available.

The process I went through when creating this piece of art was taking the original photo, and attempting to copy it down onto the scratchboard. If I were to do this again I would most likely do the gridding technique in order to get accurate proportions and make the final product more realistic. It is important with scratchboard to always look at what ways the hair and things are going so I tried to as I went pay attention to those as well.
