April showers bring May Flowers

Acrylic Paint on Canvas Paper

Artist Statement

The idea that guided this artwork was that I knew I wanted to do something spring-related because spring has such an impact on me and my life. Whenever I think of spring I think of happiness, flowers, sun, fresh-cut grass, etc. For this project, I decided to paint a happy sunshiny flower. I knew I wanted blue in the background to signify the sky, but along the way, I decided to add navy dots to give the illusion that it could be raining, which is where I in the end was left with the idea of the title "April showers bring May flowers."

The tools and materials I used for this project were acrylic paint and acrylic paper. I also used a variety of different paint brushes and paint spatulas as well as a few take-out containers lying around to mix my paint in.

The process I went through when creating this piece was probably the least stressful, and quickest one I've ever created. I completed this within three class periods all in one day. Art, Advisory, and then Lunch. I knew exactly what I wanted to make, and what material, and all I had to do was sketch, mix, and paint! Once I had sketched the flower I started with the blue base. I mixed up this pretty blue and started to paint it all around the flower in the spots I wouldn't be painting pink. I had to remix this one blue color quite a few times because it kept running out. I then mixed the navy paint that I would dot in lines around the flower. This was to signify "rain" and was just applied using the back of a paintbrush. Finally, I started painting the actual flower. I started with the petals coating them with one pink shade and then later going in with darker and lighter shades and tints to add dimension. For the flower face, I started with the yellowy base and ended with the eyes, lips, and blush marks. Overall, I really enjoy this piece and find it really cute.
