Sharpie pen on Bristol Board Paper

Artist Statement

The main idea that guided my artwork was that in class we were told to look away from the paper and never pick up the pencil. First, we placed our non-dominant hand into a unique position and were told to draw it without looking at the paper or taking our pencil off the paper. Second, we started by looking at ourselves in a mirror to essentially create a self-portrait. Finally, we were told to look at our partner at the table sitting next to us with the same method as before.

For this artwork, I used 12" by 9" paper with Watercolors and Sharpie. I used a thin sharpie pen for the continuous line drawings and the watercolor for the splashes of color behind some of the sketches.

The process I went through with this artwork was once my three original pieces were done, I found that the apparent theme was the aspects of life and body parts so I found a mannequin, and had some friends model along with animals to keep the running theme of life going. Once those were done, I realized that the paper needed splashes of color so I added more characteristics of what I would consider as living. for example, The flowers under the foot signify the world growing around and underneath us and the sun and mood behind my hand.
