Artist Statement

The idea that guided this artwork was creating a sculpture using random things I had. For this project, I created a turtle making the shell 3D and the rest of the turtle 2D. I did this to add dimension and something different. I had thought about doing a whale tail but I eventually decided on the turtle.

When creating this piece, the materials I used were cardboard as a base for the shell, newspaper to form the shell, and tape to make sure the newspaper was secure enough for me to paper maché it. Paper Maché is when you take glue and water to seal pieces of newspaper onto something to make it more sturdy and easy to paint on or attach things to. I also used cut-up pieces of old paint tiles to create the 3D shell feature and give it the perfect texture and color. Finally, I used construction for the rest of the 2D features like the head and the fins.

The process I went through with this project was first cutting out the shell shape onto cardboard so that I could ball up the newspaper and attach it to something. I then started balling up and taping newspapers to eventually get the shape and form of the shell that pleased me. I then completely covered the shell in tape so that I could then paper maché it. Once paper machéd, I then started to hot glue on the cut tiles onto the form I created for my shell. Once all of those were glued on, I finally cut and glue the head and fin shapes to the cardboard base.
