Colored Pencil, marker, and gel pen on Bristol Board paper

Artist Statement

The main idea that guided this artwork was the idea of creating a piece that showcases a realistic piece of a specific duck. I really liked the look of the King Eider duck and wanted to go above and beyond by also added a female King Eider with her babies in the background.

For this artwork I used Colored Pencils, A bit of marker, and a white gel pen on Bristol board paper. I chose these materials because colored pencil is good at layering and blending colors together which was really helpful with creating the realistic look of the ducks.

The process I went through with this artwork was once I had picked out my duck, I decided how I wanted the bird positioned. I had a few ideas about birds flying and different habitats but In the end I chose birds on the water. I then got the basic shapes of the birds down as outlines and eventually went to a more realistic detailed outline. I then started on my background which in this case was the water. i worked with building up colors so that the water was the best to my liking. I then started on the details of the ducks which took the longest. This whole project was based on layering up colors and building up the material so that it looks as realistic as possible. I started with the male King Eider (The biggest closest one), and then I went on to the mom and babies last. The final thing I did was touch up the water and finish up the reflections in the water, and then I was done.
