Solve a World Problem

World Problem

Process

First, we identified the need. We found a need for damage protection against tornadoes. Next, we researched all about tornadoes. We researched what materials are strong and weather resistant. We also researched the what tests things must go through to be considered tornado/hurricane resistant. The last thing we researched was how we could minimize damage. The third thing we did was brainstorm possible solutions. We did not come up with many good ideas, but we settled on a window cover. After, we planned out a way for our panel to cover the window. We would have the panel sit outside the house as part of the houses design and you could cover the window when necessary. We then built a prototype out of cardboard. Next, we found a video testing our panel design by shooting a 2x4 at it at 100mph. We then improved our idea by changing its setup to be mechanical.

Content

Our project did not involve much as our design was just a panel to cover the window. But, we practiced our solving because we figured out the impact of the 2x4 on our panel. We used the equation F=ma. A 2x4 green lumber board has a mass of 13 lbs. 13 lbs in kg is 5.89. Our acceleration was 100mph/44.7m/s divided by .5s for the change in time. 44.7/5=89.4. F=(5.89kg)(89.4m/s^2). Our force was 526.566kgm/s^2

Reflection

There were not many things we did well as a group, but I think I did decently by myself. I had decent creativity during this project. I was the one who gave my team ideas on how to model our project. I said we should build it out of cardboard or maybe make a model on google drawings. The second was cultural competence. I was culturally competent because we needed to thing of a world problem that effects many people. To know about things happening in different places in the world is being culturally competent.

One thing I can work on was collaboration. Our group seemed to be split from the very beginning. I didn't have very good collaboration with some of my group mates. The second thing I need to work on is critical thinking. Though I was a little creative during this project, I did not think critically. When we were thinking of how to prevent/defend against tornadoes, I was not thinking at all. We came up with very few ideas, and the only Idea I had was a tornado vacuum. I need to work on thinking better during key times of the project.
