Physics of Sports Video

Video Description

When our group first heard we were doing our next project on sports, we all decided that we would do baseball. We then realized that a curveball would be perfect to show the physics of. It would also be very easy for us to do as both Hayden D. and I play baseball.

Once we started the project, it was smooth sailing. It took us only the first thirty minutes to record our action, and the rest we spent doing our voice-overs and editing. The entire process was a breeze.

Calculations

Horizontal Velocity

The horizontal velocity was taken from the ball. The equation was Velocity(Horizontal)=Distance(Horizontal)/time. The final answer we got after plugging in was 15.36m/s.

Vertical Velocity

The vertical velocity was also taken from the ball. The equation for vertical velocity is Velocity(Vertical)=Acceleration(Gravity) x time^2. Our final answer for this equation was 5.66m/s.

Total Velocity

For the total velocity, we use the pythagorean theorem (a^2+b^2=c^2). After using horizontal velocity and vertical velocity for a and b, we found the total velocity to be 16.369m/s.

Force Of Impact

We took the force of impact from the force of the ball into the glove. The equation used is J=Ft. To find Ft, you use the equation mv=Ft. Now we plug in .145kg for mass, 16.369m/s for velocity, and 1.2s for time. Once plugged in, we got that F=1.9779N Then you plug that into the original equation, which gets you to 2.37N

RPM

RPM is revolutions per minute (The ball). To calculate this, we put the frames per second over the frames it took for a revolution. This gave us 26.7 revolutions per second, which equals 1,600 revolutions per minute.

Reflection

One thing I know our group did really well was collaboration. We all worked together really well. We all knew what the others wanted us to do, and we did. All of use just clicked together. The second thing we did well was communicate. We all told the others what we thought the video should be, and decided. We all put our opinions forward and showed the others what we thought about certain things.

Two things I could work on in the next project are getting to it. I need to work on just getting going, not wasting the first 15 minutes lollygagging. The second thing I need to work on is realizing that not every idea I have is going to make it to the final project. Next time I will be ready as soon as possible and the second thing I will do is work on accepting the final project.
