Writing Poetry

Dear Anger

Dear Anger,

What the heck, man? I don’t get it. Why is it that you are triggered by inconsequential things? Why do things that don’t matter become so significant to you? You are so slanted. You leave no room for level-headedness. Everything you do seems out of proportion and over the top. I feel like you are out of control. You need to get a grip. If only you came in times of need. I need to learn how to control you and use you to my advantage. We could do great things together. I know you can be a great motivator and we could do great together.

Teddy

What I Love

The anticipation,

The hype,

Everyone is waiting,

For the one breakthrough moment,

The moment that puts one team ahead,

And the other behind.

It’s this anticipation,

That makes my love for hockey reign supreme,

It’s what makes me crave the game,

It’s what drives me to be my best,

The only thing I’d love even more,

Would be to be the person to have that breakthrough moment.

Home

The cold dew on the short blades of grass

Kids chatting about their days

The over usage of deodorant

Kids sploshing through the mud that never seems to go away

The clean whiteboard

The squeaking of pens on the clean whiteboard

The old desks with rock solid seats

The floor creaking when a desk slides on it

All the kids, almost getting run over,

The clunkers going at their max speed of 15 mph,

Juniors flexing their new 2001 Toyota Corolla,

All fighting to get out of the parking lot first.

We were asked to write 5 different poems to specific prompts over the course of 5 weeks. We did this to refine writing skills and increase imagination and awareness of the world around us. We also did this so that the word can enjoy our writing in the present and future.

Reflection

We practiced many of the six 6's during the poetry unit. Some of the more important ones were Critical Thinking and Cultural Competence. Critical thinking was very important during this unit because we had to think for awhile about our poems and how we wanted to write them. Cultural competence was also very critical to this unit as we had to think of topics that we would like to write about and people would want to read about.

During the poetry slam, I did a couple things well, and a couple things I did not as well. Two things I did well were projection and composure. I projected myself well and I was able to keep my composure and not get nervous. Two things I need to work on are expressing emotion and flow. When I was presenting, I was stiff and didn't portray any emotions. I also had no flow as I stuttered a couple times.
