Randall Davey Audubon Summer Camp
(Summer of 2024)
Randall Davey Audubon Center- Santa Fe, New Mexico
Over the summer of 2024, I had the privilege of stepping into a teaching role as a summer camp educator at the Randall Davey Audubon Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This incredible experience lasted from June 3rd to July 26th, giving me nearly two months to immerse myself in the world of environmental education and youth engagement.
Each week, I had the rewarding opportunity to work with two distinct age groups: children aged 5–8 and those aged 8–11. I collaborated closely with my fellow educators, Megan and Liam, to create engaging and educational experiences for our campers. My morning shifts were spent alongside Annie, as we took on the early morning responsibilities. Arriving by 8 a.m., we prepared the classroom or pavilion for the day ahead, ensuring everything was set up and ready to welcome our campers.
The early morning shift was particularly crucial because campers and their parents would arrive between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m. This period was not just about logistical preparations; it was also an invaluable time to build connections. Establishing a warm and welcoming rapport with parents is a fundamental aspect of the education field, as it fosters trust and sets the tone for a positive and collaborative experience. By greeting parents, sharing updates, and answering questions, I was able to strengthen the bridge between home and camp, ensuring that both parents and children felt comfortable and confident in the program.
This role allowed me to grow as an educator, develop strong communication skills, and cultivate meaningful relationships with both the young campers and their families. It was an unforgettable summer filled with learning, teaching, and making a lasting impact.
Growth
When I first started this job, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nerves. My biggest worries were whether the families would like me, if the campers would listen to me, and if I would genuinely enjoy the experience. These questions lingered in my mind as I stepped into this new role, but over the course of the summer, those concerns began to transform into valuable lessons.
Working across both age groups at the camps provided me with significant personal and professional growth. I gained a clearer understanding of where I see myself within the field of education and what it means to be an effective, compassionate educator. Each week, we had the opportunity to meet with our camp educator coordinator, Meghan Baker. These weekly check-ins were an essential part of the experience. During these sessions, we reflected on our highs and lows from the previous week, discussing challenges we faced, moments we were proud of, and how we could improve moving forward.
These meetings became a space for growth, support, and collaboration. They allowed me to learn from my peers’ experiences and gain new strategies to apply in my own teaching. Over time, I found myself growing more confident in my abilities to connect with families, engage campers, and embrace the rewarding challenges of the job.
